2016 NCAA Second Round Scoreboard and Sweet Sixteen Matchups

The Second Round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament is now history. The road to the College Cup came to an end on Sunday for sixteen more teams as the traffic on the road to the Final Four in Houston was narrowed to sixteen teams. As expected, the landscape of the Tournament changed but the way in which it changed was unexpected and improbable with Providence upseting number one seed Maryland 5-4 scoring four unanswered goals in the second half of play to prevail after the Terps had jumped out to a commanding 4-1 advantage. Virginia Tech also eliminated number ten seed Charlotte 3-2 on the road, SIUE advanced past number fifteen seed Butler in penalty kicks after the contest was scoreless at the end of regulation and overtime, and Creighton under the guidance of Elmar Bolowich traveled to Lexington and knocked off number sixteen seed Kentucky 3-2 setting up a Sweet Sixteen matchup between the Bluejays and Providence. Eight of the sixteen teams in the Sweet Sixteen are from the Atlantic Coast Conference with eight of the nine teams in the tournament field from the conference advancing.
