Andrew Thomas RS Freshman Goalkeeper Stanford

Defense played a key role in outcome of Sweet Sixteen contests across the country.

Thomas posted his eleventh shutout of the year with an eleven save evening including several stops at point blank range during 110 minutes of scoreless soccer with Saint Mary's.

He also had two stops during a penalty kick shootout to give Stanford the slim edge they needed to advance past the highly regarded Gaels 4-2 in a penalty kick shootout.

Jeremy Gunn stated, "Andrew kept us in the game today with some amazing saves."

Stanford survives and advances to the Elite Eight where the Cardinal will host Akron on Friday.  The Zips upset number one seed Wake Forest in Winston Salem 1-0 to punch their ticket to the quarterfinals.
