Louisville 1 – Maryland 0 – Louisville opened their new Dr Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium with an impressive win over the highly regarded Terps. Midfielder Andrew Brody netted the lone score of the evening in the 54th minute of play with he placed a header into the upper left corner of the goal after receiving a cross from forward Ricardo Velazco. Joachim Ball had five saves in goal to record his tenth career shutout for Louisville. Sophomore Zack Steffen had two saves in goal for the Terps.
Notre Dame 2 – Marquette 1 – The number one ranked Irish came from behind to top the Golden Eagles. Redshirt junior C. Nortey scored in the ninth minute of play after receiving a well played ball over the top of the Notre Dame back line from redshirt junior David Selvaggi to give Marquette the early lead. Connor Klekota scored unassisted in the 28th minute for Notre Dame to knot it at 1-1. Irish senior forward Leon Brown netted what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 66th minute with Luke Mishu providing the assist. The Irish will face Georgetown on Sunday at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington. Marquette will face the Indiana Hoosiers on Sunday.
UCLA 3 – Wake Forest 1 – A crowd of 3,788 was at Spry Stadium in Winston Salem for this contest between two of the premier programs in the college game. Things looked good for the Demon Deacons when Ian Harkes scored in the 13th minute of play to give Wake Forest the early advantage but UCLA came roaring back behind first half goals from Andrew Tusaazemajja and Larry Ndjock and a goal in the 88th minute of play from freshman Seyi Adekoya.
Virginia 1 – Old Dominion 0 (OT) – Senior midfielder Ryan Zinkham came up big for the Cavaliers when he placed a shot into the bottom left corner of the net from twenty yards out with an assist from senior midfielder Eric Bird just a minute into overtime in a hard fought contest with ODU. A total of 4,144 fans were on hand to witness this one at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville. Virginia had a commanding 20-9 advantage in shots and a 15-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Washington 4 – Gonzaga 0 – The Huskies, who return eight starters from the 2013 team that advanced to the Elite Eight, took to the road to face Gonzaga. This one was all Washington from the get-go. Senior forward Darwin Jones converted two penalty kicks. Sophomore midfielder Cristian Roldan and junior forward Josh Heard also scored. Redshirt senior Spencer Richey returned to the lineup in goal after missing the 2013 season due to injury. Richey had a two save evening and picked up his 27th career shutout at Washington.
Coastal Carolina 3 – Connecticut 2 – The Chanticleers come up with a huge on the road win before a crowd of 4,385 fans at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Connecticut. Connecticut took what appeared to be a commanding two goal lead but then the Coastal Carolina attack got in gear and the momentum of the contest shifted. Cyle Larin scored for Connecticut in the 9th minute and the Huskies made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute as a result of an own goal. Ollivier Gueguen began the Coastal comeback with a header in the 56th minute. Louis Dargent tied it at 2-2 with a deftly struck chip shot in the 62nd minute and senior forward Ricky Garbanzo headed in what proved to be the game winner in the 72nd minute of play off an assist from Elis Bjornsson. Garbanzo had a two assist and one goal evening to lead the Chanticleer offense. Things don't get any easier for Coastal Carolina as they square off with Maryland on Monday in another tough on the road venue.
New Mexico 1 – Akron 0 – In one of the more difficult 2014 season openers for both teams, the Lobos got what proved to be the game winning goal just three minutes into the match when Oniel Fisher scored from the top of the box after receiving a pass from teammate Chris Wehan. Akron goalkeeper Jake Fenlason had eight saves for the contests including a nice save of a New Mexico penalty kick attempt in the 25th minute of play. Patrick Poblete had two saves in goal for the Lobos to record the shutout.
Providence College 2 – Bryant 0 – Sophomore Mac Steeves scored for the Friars in the 13th minute out of a cross put in play by junior Fabio Machado. Junior Manny Andrade netted the insurance goal at close range in the second half with Machado again providing the assist.
Saint Francis (Pa.) 2 – Loyola University Maryland 0 – Francis de Vries converted a header out of a corner kick in the 15th minute of play with Pablo Medina contributing the assist. The Red Flash made it 2-0 in the 19th minute when senior forward Ryan Byers alertly intercepted a back pass intended for the Loyola Marymount netminder and slotted it into the back of the net.
Northeastern 1 – New Hampshire 0 – Freshman forward Frantzdy Pierrot placed a header in the left corner of the goal after receiving a ball put into play out of a corner kick by teammate redshirt freshman Daniel Arvidsson in the 39th minute of the match to give Northeastern the edge they need to top New Hampshire before a crowd of 1,362 at Parsons Field. Freshman Jonathan Thuresson had five saves in goal for Northeastern in route to recording the shutout in goal. Six freshmen were in the starting lineup for Northeastern in their season opener with New Hampshire. Northeastern now travels to face Hartford on Monday night.
West Virginia 1 – St. John's 0 – West Virginia recorded just their third win in fifteen tries over the Red Storm with the lone goal of the evening coming in the 39th minute of play when junior forward Jamie Merriam drove a header into the back of the net from six yards out. West Virginia had a 13-6 advantage in shots. Sophomore Brent Arnold had two saves in goal to record his first career shutout. Redshirt junior Jordan Stagmiller had one save in goal for St. John's. West Virginia will face Oakland on Monday. St. John's will remain on the road to face Penn State on Sunday.
Syracuse 3 – Niagara 0 – This one was all Syracuse. Sophomore Louis Cross slotted a header into the left side of the net with senior Jordan Murrell contributing the assist in the 22nd minute of play. Chris Nanco netted the second Syracuse goal unassisted after making a nice move down the left wing in the 49th minute of play. In the 83rd minute the Orange made it 3-0 off an own goal coming out of a corner kick. Junior Alex Bono recorded his 19th career shutout without having to make a save in goal. Syracuse will tangle with St. Mary's (California) on Sunday at the SU Soccer Stadium.
UNC Wilmington 2 – High Point 0 – Midfielder Jamie Dell scored in the 28th minute of play and Kalvin Kromer added the second goal in the 80th minute when he alertly placed a rebound into the back to give the Seahawks a good season opening on the road win.
North Carolina 3 – California 1 – The Tar Heel offense was in gear in this one. Tyler Engel, Andy Craven and Rob Lovejoy scored to propel the Tar Heels past the Golden Bears in the season opener for both teams. Engel scored from fifteen yards out off an assist from Craven. Craven scored in the 33rd minute with Lovejoy contributing the assist. Christian Thierjung made it 2-1 when he scored for California in the 36th minute. Lovejoy netted the final goal of the evening in the 83rd minute. Brendan Moore was solid in goal for North Carolina recording eight saves. Kevin Peach had four saves in goal for California.
Monmouth 5 – Lowell 0 – Senior Dom Sarle and sophomore Dave Nigro scored twice as Monmouth rolled to victory in their season opener. Senior Bryant Avalos also scored with an assist from junior John Egan. Monmouth will host Lehigh University on Monday night.
Hartford 1 – Holy Cross 1 (OT) – Arno Rupp found the back of the net for Holy Cross from 12 yards out in the 57th minute after receiving a through ball from teammate Peter Ayers. Senior Omar Tall placed a rebound into the back of the net for Hartford in the 65th minute to conclude the scoring for the evening.
East Tennessee State 3 – William and Mary 2 – Reilly Maw gave William and Mary the early lead when he scored three minutes into the contest. ETSU tied it at 1-1 in the 32nd minute off a goal from Joao Ramalho . Ramalho netted his second goal of the evening early in the second half and in the 50th minute Austin Warren converted a header after receiving a cross from Samuel Sevigny to up the ETSU lead to 3-1. Zachary Montebell closed the gap to 3-2 when he scored for the Tribe in the 83rd minute but that concluded the scoring for the evening. William and Mary outshot ETSU 17-11 for the match.
Vermont 2 – James Madison 0 – Brian Wright scored the first goal for Vermont in the 4th minute after receiving a well played and timed ball from Brad Cole. Shane Haley netted the insurance goal with five minutes remaining in the contest with Wright contributing the assist. James Madison had a 17-11 advantage in shots and a huge 11-2 advantage in corner kicks but they were unable to finish the scoring opportunities that came their way. Senior Conor Leland recorded the shutout in goal for Vermont.
Milwaukee 2 – DePaul 1 – Petter Ingebrigtsen scored in the 18th minute to give Milwaukee a 1-0 advantage. Erik Rodriguez responded with a goal in the 19th minute for DePaul to knot the score at 1-1. Nick Moon netted the game winning goal for Milwaukee in the 65th minute of play.
FGCU 2 – South Florida 0 – This one was delayed for 31 minutes due to lightning and thunderstorms in the area. Felipe DeSousa converted a penalty kick in the 66th minute and Kamar Marriott scored in the 87th minute to give FGCU a solid season opening win over South Florida. South Florida had a 17-10 advantage in shots. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Nathan Ingham had five saves in route to recording his 11th career shutout in goal for FGCU.
VCU 3 – Farleigh Dickinson 0 – Senior Jose Manel scored in the seventh minute of play to give the Rams the early lead. Kharlton Belmar and Mario Herera Meraz netted goals two and three for VCU in the second stanza. VCU will face East Tennessee State on Sunday at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond in what looks to be an interesting matchup.
Virginia Tech 1 – SIUE 0 (OT) – Brad Vorv netted the game winning goal for Virginia Tech a little over six minutes into the first overtime period when he lofted a chip shot into the back of the frame from 25 yards out. Credit midfielder Niels Kirch with the assist on the goal. Freshman Ben Lundgaard was solid in goal making seven saves to earn the first shutout of his collegiate career.
UIC 3 – Cal State Fullerton 2 (OT) – Redshirt junior Thomas Villamil drove a header into the back of the net out of a corner kick served in by teammate junior Joel Salmeron in the 92nd minute of play to give UIC a hard fought win over a very game Cal State Fullerton team. Jesus Torres and Sergio Fuentes netted the other two goals for UIC in the 53rd and 65th minutes of play. Cal State Fullerton got on the board with an own goal in the 69th minute and a goal from Amara Soumah in the 88th minute that sent the contest into overtime.
Air Force 1 – Navy 1 (OT) – A crowd of 806 fans were on hand for this one played at the USAF Academy in Colorado. Navy struck first just six minutes into the match off a goal from forward Jamie Dubyoski. Air Force tied it with four ticks remaining on the clock in the first half of play when Gus Jensen scored from 15 yards out after receiving a pass from teammate Tucker Axhoj. The start of the contest was delayed for almost two hours due to lightning in the area.
Bradley 3 – San Jose State 2 (OT) – One of the more exciting season openers was delayed two and a half hours due to bad weather in the area. Grant Bell headed in the golden goal for Bradley with a mere 19.5 seconds remaining in the second overtime period. SJSU went up 1-0 in the 32nd minute when Frankie Beauchamp converted a penalty kick. Andrew Brown and Jason Lesch scored in the 62 and 68th minutes to give Bradley a 2-1 lead. Eric Mendez responded with a goal for SJSU in the 71st minute off an assist from Johnathan Colunga to send the contest into extra time where Bell settled it in favor of Bradley.
Georgetown 1 – Indiana 1 (OT) – This one was part of the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic in Bloomington. Indiana struck first in the 26th minute when forward Femi Hollinger-Janzen placed a rebound into the back of the net. IU took at 1-0 lead into intermission. Georgetown continued to work hard and eventually it paid off in the 58th minute when All-American forward Brandon Allen sent a bullet into the lower left corner of the net after receiving a pass from sophomore forward Alex Muyl. Both teams displayed a lot of mettle. The IU lineup included seven players who had never before appeared in an official match for the Hoosiers.
Michigan State 1 – SMU 0 – Senior defender Ryan Keener drove home a header out of a cross that was served in by junior Jason Stacy in the 78th minute of play. Zach Bennett recorded four saves in goal to anchor a solid Spartan defensive effort. Michael Nelson had seven saves in goal for SMU. Michigan State had a 15 to 8 advantage in shots.
Creighton 2 – Stanford 0 – The Bluejays came up big in this one with Ricky Lopez-Espin and Fabian Herbers netting goals in the 11th and 53rd minutes of play. Connor Sparrow had three saves in goal for Creighton to record the shutout. Creighton did a better job of maintaining possession and of taking advantage of the scoring opportunities that came their way. This one was played before a crowd on 2,612 at Morrison Stadium in Omaha.
UC Santa Barbara 2 – College of Charleston 1 – The Gauchos open the season with a solid on the road across the country win in the Aaron Olitsky Memorial Tournament in Charleston, South Carolina. Reed McKenna and Charlie Miller scored in the first half for UCSB. Tanner Clay netted the lone College of Charleston goal in the 71st minute. Sophomore playmaker Ismaila Jome contributed the helpers on the first two UC Santa Barbara goals.
UMBC 4 – LIU 0 – Senior midfielder Stephen started the scoring for UMBC with a goal in the 9th minute of play. Senior defender Jordan Becker made it 2-0 UMBC when he scored in the 11th minute. Senior midfielder Geaton Caltabiano added goal three in the first half and goal four in the 81st minute of play.
Charlotte 2 – Davidson 0 – Kyle Parker converted a penalty in the 28th minute and Brandt Bronico netted the second goal out of a free kick from 25 yards out in the 64th minute to give the 49ers a good season opening on the road win over a sometimes very difficult Davidson team. Charlotte had a 16 to 4 advantage in shots for the evening.
Penn State 1 – Oakland 0 – Oakland gave the Nittany Lions all they could handle in this one but a Connor Maloney goal in the 52nd minute gave Penn State the edge they needed to secure the win. Andrew Wolverton had three saves in goal to record the shutout. The Nittany Lions had a 20-9 edge in shots. Penn State will host St. John's on Sunday.
Denver 2 – CSUN 1 – The Pioneers build on the success they enjoyed last year with a good season result at home against a highly regarded Cal State Northridge team. Karsten Hanlin drew first blood for Denver when he drove a low shot from just inside the top of the box into the back of the frame. Credit Ryan Dunk with the assist on the first goal. Eric Kronenberg placed a shot into the upper left corner of the goal in the 69th minute to give Denver a little breathing room. Ryan Dodson contributed the assist on the second Denver goal. Senior forward Sagi Lev-Ari converted a penalty kick for the Matadors with a little under 7 minutes remaining to conclude the scoring for the evening.
Clemson 1 – Radford 0 – This one was closer than many thought it would be. Sophomore Thales De Mello Moreno scored the game winning goal for Clemson in the 86th minute of play when his shot from just outside the box landed in the right corner of the goal. Junior forward T.J. Casner contributed the helper. Clemson had 18 shots to Radford's 5. Andrew Tarbell had a single save in goal to record the shutout for the Tigers.
Delaware 2 – Sacred Heart 0 – The Blue Hens started slowly but picked up steam as the game progressed. Junior midfielder Nick RiRienzo broke the ice for Delaware when he scored in the 74th minute of the match. Senior midfielder Ben Asante netted the insurance goal in the 82nd minute off an assist from Kyle Bruno. Senior Borja Barbero had three saves in goal to record the shutout. A supportive crowd of 1,027 was on hand at Grant Stadium to witness the contest.
Duke 1 – Loyola Marymount 1 – LMU's Adrien Perez scored from 12 yards out in the 5th minute of play after receiving a cross from teammate Sebastian De rada. Freshman forward Jeremy Ebobisse netted the equalizer for the Blue Devils from four yards out coming out of a long throw in with a double assist from Cameron Moseley and Nick Palodichuk. Duke had five freshmen in their starting lineup.
