Nine Players From College Pathway Named to MLS All-Star Game Roster

The MLS All-Star roster has been revealed for the upcoming All-Star Game in Charlotte. The roster features several former college soccer players. Here are the nine MLS All-Stars who played at the collegiate level.

Matt Freese – Harvard – Freese played two years for the Crimson, being named to Second Team All-Ivy in 2018 before signing a homegrown contract with Philadelphia, where he spent three seasons as a backup before joining New York City FC, where he has played since, eventually becoming the starting goalkeeper for the United States Men’s National Team for the 2026 World Cup.

Brian Schwake – DePaul – Schwake was a member of the DePaul Blue Demons for one season, not appearing in any games, before leaving to pursue opportunities in Europe, eventually making his way back to the United States with Nashville SC, where he has taken over the starting goalkeeper job this season.

Max Arfsten – UC Davis – Arfsten spent three years at UC Davis, missing out on the 2020 season due to COVID. In his final season in college, he had 15 goal contributions before going to play a season for San Jose Earthquakes II in MLS Next Pro, then getting drafted by the Columbus Crew. With the Crew, he has recorded 14 goals and 22 assists in 87 appearances across four seasons.

Richie Laryea – Akron – Laryea played two seasons for the Zips, leading the team with 11 goals in his final season in 2015, on his way to being named First Team All-MAC and Third Team NSCAA All-American before being drafted seventh overall in the MLS SuperDraft by Orlando City SC. Since being drafted, he has played 166 games, with his most productive season coming in 2020 with four goals and four assists for Toronto FC.

Anthony Markanich – Northern Illinois – Markanich played his entire collegiate career with Northern Illinois, scoring 17 goals and assisting another 24, the second most assists in program history. He was named to the Second Team All-MAC in his freshman season and First Team All-MAC in the following three seasons. Across five seasons in MLS, he has appeared in 90 games for three different teams, currently with Minnesota United.

Daniel Munie – Indiana – Munie played four seasons for the Hoosiers, winning the Big Ten regular season and conference tournament three times, being a part of 41 clean sheets and never receiving a booking. At the conclusion of his collegiate career, he joined the San Jose Earthquakes, where he has played for the past four seasons.

Jackson Ragen – Michigan – While at Michigan, Ragen was named to the All-Big Ten First Team and the 2021 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, leading to him being selected 33rd overall in the MLS SuperDraft by the Seattle Sounders, where he has played since.

Tim Ream – Saint Louis – Ream played four years at Saint Louis, appearing in 82 games, starting every game he appeared in from his sophomore season on. After his senior season, he was drafted by the New York Red Bulls, where he played for two seasons before making a move to Europe. Ream played in England from 2011 until 2024, when he joined Charlotte FC as a free agent. The Charlotte FC defender recently captained the USMNT at the 2026 World Cup.

Sebastian Berhalter – UNC – The son of Chicago Fire Head Coach Gregg Berhalter, Sebastian played a single season at North Carolina before signing a homegrown contract with the Columbus Crew. Berhalter played a season with Columbus and a season with Austin FC before joining the Vancouver Whitecaps, where he broke through as a key player in 2025, leading to a USMNT call-up for the 2026 World Cup and selection to his first All-Star game.
