College Soccer News Women’s Team Of The Week – Week Ending October 29, 2023

The College Soccer News Team of The Week Recognizes Players who played a key role in the success their teams had during the week.

Holly Ward – Junior – Forward – Texas – Ward found the back of the net twice contributing the equalizer and what proved to be the game-winning goal to help an explosive Texas team secure a big 4-2 come from behind win over TCU in a key Big 12 Conference contest. The Longhorns improve to 13-4-2 overall with a 6-3-1 mark in conference play. Number four seed Texas opens play in the Big 12 Tournament on Monday against number five seed West Virginia. .
Elanor Dale – Senior – Forward – Nebraska – Dale is a playmaker who continues to find the back of the net on a regular basis for the Huskers. This week she scored twice in their 3-2 win over Ohio State in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament. Nebraska improves to 14-2-3. The number two seeded Huskers advance to the semifinals where they will tangle with number three seeded Wisconsin on Thursday.
Cariel Ellis – Graduate Student – Forward – Lamar University – Ellis scored Lamar’s first two goals and contributed an assist on the goal scored by Isela Ramirez to play a key role in a 4-1 win over Southeastern Louisiana in a Southland Conference contest. Ellis has seven goals and five assists on the season. The Cardinals improve to 14-2-2 with a 9-0-1 mark in conference play. Lamar begins Southland Conference tournament play on Friday against the winner of the Northwestern State and Texas A and M Corpus Christi contest.
Giana Gourley – Senior – Forward – Grand Canyon – Gourley scored twice to help propel Grand Canyon past Utah Tech in the opening round of the WCC Tournament. Gourley has 20 goals and five assists on the season. Grand Canyon is 12-4-2 overall with a 5-1-3 mark in conference play. The number four seeded Lopes advance to the semifinals where they will face number one seed Utah Valley on Wednesday.
Samantha Wiehe – Junior – Midfielder – Xavier – Wiehe scored the Musketeers first goal and assisted on the goal scored by freshman midfielder Kennedy Clark in Xavier’s 3-0 win over Big East opponent Marquette. Wiehe has seven goals and six assists on the season. Xavier improves to 13-2-4 overall with a 6-0-4 mark in conference play. On Thursday the Musketeers will begin play in the Big East Tourney against the winner of the first round matchup between Providence and St. John’s.
Landy Mertz – Fifth Year – Midfielder – Pittsburgh – Mertz scored Pitt’s first goal in a 2-1 win over ACC foe Virginia Tech. She also assisted on the goals scored by Ellie Coffield and Amanda West to help the Panthers upset North Carolina 2-1 in overtime in the first round of the ACC Tournament in Chapel Hill. It was Pitt’s first ever win over the Tar Heels. The Panthers improve to 14-4-1 with a 6-2-1 mark in conference play. Pitt advances to the semifinals at WakeMed Soccer Park on Thursday where they will face number one seed FSU.
Lisa Suydam – Freshman – Midfielder – Monmouth – Suydam scored and contributed an assist on Chloe Messer’s goal in a 3-0 win over Stony Brook in the quarterfinals of the CAA Tournament. She also added the equalizer in Monmouth’s subsequent 2-1 win in overtime against Hofstra. Sophomore forward Summer Reimet scored the game-winner in overtime in the semifinal contest with Hofstra. Monmouth will face number one seed Towson on Sunday in the championship match.
Samantha Cary- Fifth Year – Defender – Iowa – Cary assisted on the goals scored by Kelli McGroarty and Sofia Bush and put in a full ninety minutes of play on the defensive side of the ball to help Iowa come from behind to upset Michigan State 2-1 in East Lansing in the Big Ten Tournament. Iowa advances to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals on Thursday to face Penn State. Iowa is not 10-4-4 overall.
Lyndsey Heckel – Senior – Defender – Saint Louis – Heckel scored out of a corner kick and put in a full 90 minute shift for a Saint Louis defense that shutout VCU 2-0 in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament. The Billikens are now 15-2-2 and advance to the semifinals where they will face Duquesne on Wednesday.
Marianna Annest – Graduate Student – Defender – Alabama – Annest contributed on both sides of the ball for the Tide in a 2-1 on the road win over Missouri. Annest came through in the clutch when she drove a shot into the upper left corner of the net in the 86th minute of play after receiving a pass from midfielder Felicia Knox to give Alabama the edge they needed to secure the win. She also was part of solid Tide defense. Alabama concludes regular season play with an 11-4-4 overall record and 5-4-1 mark in SEC play. The Tide will face Mississippi State on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament.
Lauren Flynn – Senior – Defender – Florida State – Flynn scored three times in FSU’s regular season ending 5-0 win over NC State. She also put in a full 90 minute shift on the defensive side of the ball for the Seminoles. FSU continues to roll with a 14-0-1 overall record and 9-0-1 mark in ACC play. The number one seeded Noles begin play in the ACC Tournament on Thursday against a very competitive Pittsburgh team.
Lauren Towne – Junior – Goalkeeper – Gonzaga – Towne had a six save evening between the pipes anchoring a Gonzaga defense that shutout nationally ranked Santa Clara 1-0 in a key West Coast Conference contest. The Zags improve to 12-3-1 with a 5-1-0 mark in conference play. Gonzaga continues WCC play when they host Loyola Marymount on Wednesday.
