College Soccer News – Men’s National Team Of The Week – Week Ending March 14, 2021

The College Soccer News National Team Of The Week Recognizes Individuals Who Played A Key Role In The Success That Their Teams Had During A Week Of Play That Included Several Crucial Contests.

Jake Raine – Freshman – Forward – Furman – Raine decisively drove a shot into the lower left-hand corner of the goal and planted a shot into the far post from six yards out after receiving a cross from sophomore midfielder Dylan Lane in the 106th minute of play to give Furman the edge they needed to top ETSU in Johnson City, Tennessee 2-1. Furman improves to 3-0-0 with a 1-0-0 mark in Southern Conference play.
Dawsun Schrum – Junior – Forward – Oakland – Schrum alertly placed the rebound of a missed shot into the right side of the frame and scored after making a nice run that put him in position to finish a cross received from Noah Jensen. He also contributed an assist on the goals scored by teammates Charlie Braithwaite and Jensen. His two goal and two assist evening helped Oakland top Milwaukee 4-3. The Golden Grizzlies improve to 4-1-2.
Zach Ryan – Redshirt Junior – Forward – Stanford – Ryan contributed an assist on junior midfielder Will Richmond’s goal and scored with senior forward Charlie Wehan providing the helper to help the Cardinal come from two goals down to top a very good Oregon State team 3-2 in a key Pac-12 contest. Stanford improves to 6-0-0.
Giovanni Montesdeoca – Senior – Forward – North Carolina – Montesdeoca had another productive weekend of play drawing and converting a penalty kick and contributing the assist on defender Riley Thomas’ goal in North Carolina’s 2-0 win over Virginia. The Tar Heels improve to 5-3-2 with a 5-1-2 mark in ACC play.
Nick Markanich – Junior – Forward – NIU – Markanich opened up the scoring for NIU in the second half of play when he quickly pushed forward out of a counter and sent the rebound of his own missed shot back into the net. Markanich was a sparkplug all evening for an NIU team that added goals from Diego Maynez and Enrique Banuelos to upset nationally ranked Akron 3-0.
John Klein – Junior – Midfielder – Saint Louis – Klein skillfully drove a header into the back of the frame and added the helper on redshirt freshman Christian Buendia’s goal to help the Billikens secure a 2-0 Atlantic 10 Conference win over the Dayton Flyers. Saint Louis is 6-2-0 overall with a 1-0-0 mark in conference play.
Chris Sullivan – Senior – Midfielder – Bowling Green – Sullivan skillfully slotted a header into the back of the frame in the 95th minute of play to give Bowling Green the edge they needed to top SIUE 1-0. Sullivan’s header was set up by a combination of passes from midfielder Jensen Lukacsko and defender Jacob Erlandson. The Falcons improve to 3-3-0.
Noah Gulden – Junior – Defender – Lipscomb – Gulden sent a blast into the near post from ten-yards out and threaded a pass through two defenders that Jake Zec drove into the back of the frame in overtime to give Lipscomb a 3-2 win over a good Liberty team. Lipscomb rebounds from a three-game losing streak to improve to 4-3-0.
Luca Dahn – Junior – Defender – Seton Hall – Dahn contributed on both sides of the ball for the Pirates. He provided the assist on the game-winning goal scored by midfielder Paavo Riihjarvi in Seton Halls’ 1-0 win over Villanova and scored in their 2-1 win over Providence. He was also part of a very solid Pirate defense. Seton Hall improves to 5-1-2 with a 3-1-1 mark in Big East play.
Nick Richardson – RS Sophomore – Defender – Maryland – Richardson contributed the helper on the goals scored by forwards Mike Heitzmann and Paul Bin and was a key part of a solid Terp defense that defeated a very good Michigan team 2-1. The win was Sasho Cirovski’s 400th at Maryland. The Terps have now won two straight to improve to 2-3-0.
Yannik Oettl – Senior – Goalkeeper – UCF – Oetti had an eight save evening while anchoring a solid UCF defense that shutout a very talented SMU team 2-0 on the road. Credit back Andres Hernandez Betancur with a save that helped the Knights secure the shutout. UCF has now won two straight to improve to 3-3-0.
