College Soccer Men’s National Team Of The Week – Week Ending September 17, 2023

The College Soccer News Team Of The Week Recognizes Players Who Were Difference Makers For Their Teams During The Week.

Oliver Roche – Freshman – Forward – Virginia Tech – Roche came up big for the Hokies when he scored the game-winner in the 88th minute of play to give Virginia Tech the edge they needed to upset Louisville 2-1. Roche has three goals on the season.
Jason Shokalook – Junior – Forward – Akron – Shokalook had a very productive week of play scoring twice to lead Akron to a 2-0 win over a very competitive FIU team. He also contributed a goal and an assist in Akron’s 3-3 tie with Providence in their Big East opener. Akron will host Notre Dame out of the ACC on Tuesday and then resume Big East play when they travel to face St. John’s on Saturday.
Logan Farrington – Senior – Forward – Oregon State – Farrington assisted on the goal scored by Dante Williams and netted the equalizer in Oregon State’s 2-2 tie on the road with California in their Pac-12 season opener. Farrington also scored twice to play a key role in the Beavers 2-1 win over Stanford 2-1 on the road to secure a huge on the road win in Pac-12 play. Farrington has scored seven goals on the season. The Beavers gain momentum and improve to 4-2-1 overall.
Eli Goldman – Graduate Student – Forward – New Hampshire – Goldman converted a penalty kick and scored out of a breakaway with an assist from forward Georgios Koliniatis to play a key role in New Hampshire’s 3-1 come from behind win over Princeton. The Wildcats improve to 4-1-1.
Liam Butts – Fifth Year – Forward – Penn State – Butts found the back of the net once in the first half of play and twice during the second stanza to power the Nittany Lions past Ohio State in Columbus in their Big Ten opener. Penn State is now 3-1-2.
Justin Weiss – Senior – Forward – Northwestern – Weiss was a difference maker scoring three times and assisting on the goal scored by midfielder Rom Brown in Northwestern’s 4-1 win over UIC. He followed that up with a goal and an assist on teammate Ugo Achara’s goal in the Wildcats win over UC Riverside. Northwestern is off to a 6-0-1 start for the first time since 2008.
Roberto Ordonez – Junior – Midfielder – Cal State Fullerton – Ordonez helped Cal State Fullerton secure a 2-1 win over Air Force and a 4-1 win over UCLA. He scored out of a counter attack with a double assist from Erick Serrano and Mario Carlos in the win over Air Force and contributed two goals in the win over the Bruins. The win over UCLA was Cal State Fullerton’s first since 2000. The Titans are 4-2-2.
Luke Eberle – Senior – Midfielder – Liberty – Eberle put in a full 90 minute shift and scored in Liberty’s 3-1 win over Longwood. He also converted a penalty kick and sent a one-timer into the back of the frame from just inside the box to play a key role in the Flames subsequent 4-1 win over USC Upstate. Eberle has five goals and an assist on the season. Liberty improves to 5-1-0. The Flames travel to Winston-Salem to tangle with Wake Forest on Tuesday.
Maximus Barboto – Sophomore – Midfielder – NJIT – Barboto had a very productive week of play contributing two assists in NJIT’s 3-2 win over LaSalle and two assists in their subsequent 4-0 win over Sacred Heart. He now has a total of eight helpers on the season. The Highlanders return to the pitch when they host Iona on Tuesday.
Lasse Laursen – Junior – Defender – Charlotte – Larsen put in a solid 90 minutes of play for a 49er defense that didn’t allow AAC foe UAB a shot on goal in route to a 3-0 shutout. Charlotte improves to 2-2-1. The 49ers will face non-conference foe nearby Davidson on Wednesday before resuming conference play on Sunday when they host Florida Atlantic.
Kevin Bonilla – Junior – Defender – Portland – Bonilla contributed an assist on the goals scored by Samory Powder and Jose Olmos to help Portland top a very good Denver team 4-2. Bonilla has seven assists n the season. Portland is 4-1-0 overall. The Pilots will host CSUN on Thursday and travel to face Washington on Sunday before beginning WCC play the following week.
Leon Schmidt – Junior – Goalkeeper – Grand Canyon – Schmidt anchored a solid Grand Canyon defense that posted shutouts over UC Santa Barbara 3-0 and San Diego 1-0. Schmidt had seven saves in the win over the Gauchos and three in the win over the Toreros. Freshman midfielder Jorge Lopez contributed the game-winner in both wins as Grand Canyon ups their record to 4-3-0 with three consecutive clean sheets.
