College Soccer News – National Team of the Week – Week Ending September 22, 2019

The College Soccer News National Team of the Week recognizes top individual performers on both sides of the ball from coast to coast who played a key role in the success of their team. The teams of the players selected were a healthy 21-0-3 for the week.   

Garrett McLaughlin

Senior

Forward

SMU

McLaughlin netted what proved to be the game-winning goal with an assist from Knut Ahlander and provided the helper on Ahlander's goal in SMU's 2-0 win over Duke in Durham. He also drove a bicycle kick into the back of the net after controlling a deflection in SMU's 2-1 on the road win over Denver. SMU is 7-0-0. 

Toluwalase Oladeinbo

Freshman

Forward

Dayton 

 

Oladeinbo sent a header into the back of the net after receiving a cross from Cole Watkins to help Dayton upset West Virginia 2-0. He also converted two headers to help power Dayton past Detroit Mercey 5-0. The Flyers gain momemtum as they  up their record to 3-4-0.   

Cal Jennings

Senior

UCF

 

Jennings continues to be a force on the offensive side of the ball for UCF. He scored twice in UCF's 4-1 win over in state rival FGCU and contributed what proved to be the game-winning goal from inside the box in the Knights 2-0 win over South Carolina. Jennings has scored eight times so far this year. 

Brian Saramago

Loyola Maryland 

Saramago scored three times in Loyola Maryland's 4-0 win over Army in a Patriot Leage contest. Saramago used his speed and touch on the ball to create the space he needed to score the first two. His third goal was a header that was set up by passes from Justin Ingram and Jonathan Sousa. The Greyhounds are 2-4-0.  

Cherif Dieye

Louisville

 

Dieye came up big for the Cardinals when he made a nice move to create the space he needed to slot a shot into the upper right corner and then created a turnover and drove a shot inside the left post to enable Louisville to come from a goal down to top Virginia Tech 2-1 in an Atlantic Coast Conferene match. The Cardinals improve to 3-1-2. 

Manuel Ferriol

James Madison

Ferriol had an impressive four goal week during which he scored the lone goal in JMU's 1-0 win over then number one ranked Wake Forest and netted a hat trick to help JMU top Mount Saint Mary's 3-0. James Madison has won five straight to improve to 5-2-0. 

Niko Petridis

St. John's 

Petridis continues to make good things happen for the Johnnies. He sent a shot into the far post after intercepting a pass near midfield and assisted on teammate Tiago Teixeira's goal in St. John's 5-1 win over Columbia. He also scored twice and added a helper in St. John's 3-1 come from behind win over Xavier in Big East play. St. John's improves to 7-0-0.  

Jacob Montes

Georgetown 

 

Montes is a playmaker. He one-touched a shot into the right post that was set up by a nice move and pass from teammate Dylan Nealis and scored with a double assist  from Paul Rothrock and Derek Dobson to help power Georgetown past Butler 3-0 in Big East Conference action. The Hoyas are now 6-0-0. 

Miguel Yuste

Yale

 

Yale defeated Fairfield 1-0 and Stony Brook 2-0 to improve to 4-0-2. The Bulldogs are unbeaten after six games for the first time since 2005. Yuste scored from the top corner of the box with a double helper from Paolo Carroll and Ryan Matteo and sent a shot into the back of the net with Carroll and Logan Sullivan assisting in the win over Stony Brook. Yuste has four goals to date.  

Sofiane Djeffal

Midfielder

Oregon State

Djeffal helped the Beavers secure two good wins in Pac-12 play. He scored and assisted on teammate Joel Walker's goal in Oregon State's 2-0 win over UCLA. He also converted a penalty kick and assisted on Steffan Yeates goal in a 2-1 win  over San Diego State. 

Liam Wilson

Drake 

Wilson was at the heart of a tenacious Drake backline that shutout Western Illinois 1-0 and MVC foe Bradley 2-0 during the week to improve to 4-3-0. 

Sito Sena

Pittsburgh 

Sena was part of a solid and continually improving  Pitt defensive effort that shutout Akron 1-0 and Boston College 2-0 during the week. Pitt improves to 3-3-1 with a 1-1-0 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play.   

Edwyn Gutierrez

UC Riverside 

 

Gutierrez had an impressive fifteen save weekend including several key stops to anchor a UC Riverside defense that shutout Loyola Marymount 0-0 and tied Grand Canyon 1-0. UC Riverside is 5-1-2.  

Jacob Jackson

Sophomore

Goalkeeper

Loyola Marymount

Jackson was rock solid between the pipes for the Lions. He posted five stops in LMU's 0-0 tie with UC Riverside and followed that up with a five save evening in LMU's 2-0 win over CSUN. The 5-1-1 Lions have posted six straight  shutouts.
