Key contests Friday night impacted seeding in upcoming conference tournaments. Now is the time that teams seek peak performance on both sides of the ball as one and done time is just around the corner.
Virginia 2 – North Carolina 1 (ot) – The Cavaliers secured the ACC Coastal Division Championship and the number two seed in the 2019 ACC Tournament. Sophomore forward Daryl Dike scored in the fifth minute of the contest to give Virginia the early lead which they maintained until Raul Agulera sent a rebound into the back of the net for North Carolina in the seventy-eighth minute to knot the score at 1-1. Freshman defender Andreas Ueland slotted the deflection of Bret Halseys shot into the back of the net with forty-two seconds remaining in the first overtime period to give Virginia the edge they needed to claim the win. Redshirt junior Colin Shutler had five saves in goal for the Cavaliers. Alec Smir had four saves between the pipes for the Tar Heels.
Virginia improves to 14-1-1 while UNC drops to 7-7-3.
Clemson 3 – NC State 0 – Clemson secures the ACC Atlantic Division Title and claims the number one seed in the upcoming conference tournament. A highly efficient Tiger offense netted three or more goals for the twelfth time this year and goalkeeper George Marks anchored a Clemson defense that recorded its eighth shutout. Clemson took control early in the contest with Grayson Barber scoring out of a breakaway in the eleventh minute and Robbie Robinson depositing a rebound into the back of the net in the twelfth minute to make it 2-0 Clemson. Defender Malick Mbaye converted a header out of a corner kick served in by forward Kimarni Smith in the fiftieth minute to extend Clemson's lead to 3-0. Marks had six saves in goal for the Tigers. Vinnie Durand had a three save evening in goal for the Wolfpack.
Clemson improves to 14-1-1 with a 6-1-1 mark in conference play. NC State is 8-5-3 with a 3-4-1 record in ACC play.
Wake Forest 3 – Louisville 1 – Wake Forest earns a solid on the road win to get back in the win column after a loss to Notre Dame last weekend. Wake Forest came out of the gates on the front foot with freshman forward Calvin Harris scoring in the eighteenth and twenty-third minutes to give the Demon Deacons a 2-0 advantage. Louisville pulled one back when defender Louka Masset placd a back healer into the net in the thirty-sixth minute to send the teams into halftime with Wake Forest up 2-1. Midfielder Aristotle Zarris converted the insurance goal for the Demon Deacons in the fifty-second minute that was set up by a combination of passes from midfielder Alistair Johnson and forward Machop Chol. Dominic Peters had a single save in the cage for Wake Forest. Jake Gelnovatch had two stops in goal for Louisville.
Wake Forest improves to 13-3-1 with a 6-2-0 mark in ACC play. Louisville falls to 8-6-2 with a 3-4-1 record against opponents out of the ACC.
SMU 1 – Connecticut 0 – Henrik Bredeli controlled a loose ball in the box out of a corner kick served in by Knut Ahlander and directed it into the back of the net in the seventh minute of the contest to give SMU the advantage they needed to secure a win over UConn in this American Athletic Contest. Grant Makela had two saves in goal for SMU. Freshman Marcus Peterkin had three saves in goal for Connecticut.
SMU improves to 13-1-1 with a 4-1-1 mark in AAC play. Connecticut drops to 4-11-1 with a 1-5-0 record in conference action. SMU has another tough conference matchup on their dance card when they travel to Philadelphia on Tuesday to face a very competitive Temple team. Connecticut closes out regular season pay when they host AAC foe Tulsa on Tuesday. After playing in the American Athletic Conference from 2013 through 2019, Connecticut will return to the Big East Conference in 2020.
UCF 1 – Memphis 0 – UCF secured at least a share of the AAC regular season crown with a 1-0 win over Memphis. Redshirt freshman midfielder Gianluca Arcangeli scored what stood as the game-winning goal for UCF in the eighty-fifth minute after receiving a pass from Louis Perez. Yannik Oetti had a single save in goal for UCF while Parker Lackland had four saves in goal for Memphis. UCF improves to 12-1-2 with a 5-0-1 mark in conference play.
UCF will close out regular season play when they travel to face Cincinnati on Tuesday. Memphis falls to 10-5-0 with a 4-2-0 mark in conference play and will host South Florida on Tuesday in their final regular season contest.
South Carolina 1 – FIU 0 – Forward Brian Banahan's goal in the fifty-first minute of the contest gave South Carolina the edge they needed to upset FIU 1-0 in this CSUA contest. FIU had an eighteen to eight advantage in shots but a bend but don't break Gamecock defense contained the FIU offense. Nick Brady had nine saves in goal for South Carolina. Daniel Gagliardi had five saves between the pipes for FIU.
South Carolina is 7-8-2 overall with a 2-5-0 mark in CSUA play. FIU is 9-1-5 overall with a 4-1-1 mark against CUSA opponents.
Albany 1 – New Hampshire 0 – Albany rebounds from a loss last weekend to Stony Brook to upset New Hampshire in this America East Conference contest. Sophomore forward Austin DaSilva scored the lone goal of the evening when he sent a header into the right post after receiving a cross from defender Bjarki Leosson. The goal was DaSilva's twelfth so far this year. Micheal Kennedy had two saves in goal for the Great Danes to record the shutout. Albany head coach Trevor Gormon stated, "Tonight was a disciplined performance against one of the top teams in the country. We scored a fantastic goal and defended well also. Our seniors were key tonight. Their experience was on display and it's fitting that it was a performance like that on senior night."
New Hampshire drops to 12-1-2 with a 5-1-0 record in America East action. Albany improves to 9-5-1 with a 4-2-0 mark in America East play.
Seattle 1 – Incarnate Word 0 – This one took place in San Antonio, Texas. Seattle secured the Western Athletic Conference regular season title and is unbeaten in their last ten contests to improve to 11-3-3 with an 8-0-1 record in conference play. Neither team could break the code on their opponents defense in the first half of play. Seattle picked up the pace and pressure in the second stanza and Hal Uderitz netted what proved to be the game-winning goal from thirty yards out in the sixty-third minute of play. Seattle had a seventeen to five advantage in shots for the evening. Akili Kasim had one save in goal for Seattle. Carlos Mercado had eight saves in a losing cause for Incarnate Word.
Incarnate Word drops to 4-11-0 with a 1-8-0 mark in WAC play.
Virginia Tech 2 – Duke 1 – Virginia Tech got on the board in the thirty-second minute when Daniel Pereira's shot deflected off a Duke defender and found its way into the back of the frame. The contest remained 1-0 at intermission. Duke tied it at 1-1 when Daniele Proch placed a shot into the lower left corner of the goal in the forty-fifth minute. Forward Kristo Strickler netted the game-winner for Virginia Tech in the sixty-third minute when he sent the rebound of Pereira's shot out of a free kick into the back of the frame. Mathijs Swaneveld had five stops in goal for the Hokies. Will Pulisic had a three save evening for the Blue Devils.
Virginia Tech concludes regular season play with an 8-5-2 overall record with a 2-4-2 mark in ACC play. Duke falls to 7-8-2 with a 2-5-1 mark in conference play.
Notre Dame 1 – Pittsburgh 0 – Defense ruled in this ACC contest. Sophomore forward Jack Lynn's goal in the seventeenth minute that was set up by a nice through ball from graduate student midfielder Felicien Dumas proved to be the difference maker for the Irish.
Notre Dame improves to 9-6-1 with a 3-5-0 record in ACC play. Pitt drops to 8-6-2 with a 4-3-1 mark in conference play.
Boston College 2 – Syracuse 1 – Newton, Massachusetts was the site of this ACC contest. Freshmen came up big for Boston College in this one but Syracuse took the early lead when midfielder Ryan Raposo scored out of a free kick from twenty-two yards out in the thirty-third minute. Boston College was awarded a red card in the forty-first minute and played with ten from that point forward. It looked like Syracuse would take over but that was not the case. Instead, Boston College responded with a momentum building goal in the forty-second minute by freshman Amos Shapiro-Thompson with an assist from freshman forward Stefan Sigurdarson to tie the contest at 1-1. The contest remained tied at halftime. Freshman Mike Suski, a two-time Gatorade Player of the Year in Connecticut, netted what proved to be the game-winner for Boston College from twelve yards out in the seventy-eighth minute after receiving a nice cross from Sigurdarson to give the Eagles a 2-1 advantage which they held for the remainder of the contest.
Boston College improves to 8-4-3 with a 2-4-2 record in ACC play. Syracuse falls to 7-5-4 with a 2-4-2 mark in ACC action.
Northern Kentucky 5 – Bradley 0 – Northern Kentucky took over this non-conference contest in the second half. Forward Alex Willis netted the lone goal for Northern Kentucky in the first half in the seventh minute. The teams went into intermission with the Norse up 1-0. Willis scored his second goal of the evening in the seventieth minute to give Northern Kentucky a 2-0 advantage. Midfielder Alex Greive made it 3-0 in the seventy-first minute. Forward Gianni Bouzoukis scored to make it 4-0 in the eighty-fifth minute of the match and Greive found the back of the net for the Norse for the second time in the eighty fifth minute to conclude the scoring for the evening.
Northern Kentucky is 6-10-1. Bradley is 5-6-4.
Houston Baptist 2 – California Baptist 1 – California Baptist took a 1-0 lead in the thirteenth minute of the match when freshman defender Daniel Johnsson sent a header into the net out of a corner kick served in by forward Oliver Bryneus. Houston Baptist received a red card in the twenty-fourth minute and played a man down from that point forward. California Baptist held a 1-0 advantage at halftime. Houston Baptist came out strong in the second half with forward Dominick Faletto scoring in the forty-eighth minute to knot the score at 1-1 and defender Michael Gordon providing what provided to be the game-winner in the fifty-fifth minute with an assist from Luis Poblacion.
Houston Baptist wins its third straight game to improve to 6-9-0 with a 4-5-0 mark in Western Athletic Conference play. California Baptist falls to 5-10-2 with a 4-4-1 record in Western Athletic Conference play.
Bryant 1 – Fairleigh Dickinson 0 – This Northeast Conference contest which took place in Springfield, Rhode Island was scoreless at halftime. Senior Trevor Lyne broke the deadlock for Bryant when he sent a bending ball into the right side of the frame in the fiftieth minute of play with an assist from Charles DeSantis. The game-winning goal was Lyne's first career goal and it was a big one. Will Swart had three saves including one at point blank range in goal for Bryant. Jahmali Waite had two saves between the pipes for Fairleigh Dickinson .
Bryant improves to 8-6-0 with a 5-3-0 mark in NEC play. Bryant's eight wins are the program's second most in DI history. Fairleigh Dickinson falls to 6-7-2 with a 2-3-2 record in conference play.
Long Island University 3 – Robert Morris 0 – LIU came out firing in this one with defender Kyle Parish scoring in the fourth minute out of a free kick from thirty yards out that found its way just inside the right post. Forward Papa Ndoye calmly converted a penalty kick in the fifteenth minute to give the Sharks an early 2-0 margin that they never relinquished. Midfielder Jonas Dovland added a third goal for LIU in the seventy-first minute of the match to extend the final margin of victory to 3-0. Demetri Skoumbakis had two saves in goal to record the shutout for Long Island University.
LIU improves to 8-6-1 with a 5-1-1 mark in NEC play. Robert Morris drops to 4-10-2 with a 3-4-1 record in NEC action.
