As conference tournament season approaches, each match down the stretch becomes vitally important for qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. During the midweek slate, there have been three upset results that could change our coaches’ poll rankings for next week.
North Carolina losing to UAB at home
UAB went on the road and beat North Carolina for their first ranked win since 2021. They came back from being down 1-0 to secure a 2-1 result with the help of their goalkeeper, Francisco Ranieri, who stood on his head, making 10 saves. This is a tough result for the Tar Heels, as they had just broken into our rankings this past week after being right on the cusp for weeks.
UNC will have a chance to bounce back this Sunday at home against Virginia Tech.

Princeton Draws James Madison on the Road
Princeton had just broken into our top 10 this past week and hadn’t allowed a goal in their past 400-plus minutes of action. They conceded early in the second half but were able to equalize late, keeping their unbeaten streak alive. However, a road draw against a team with only one win on the season could be a disruptor in the top 10.
Princeton will have the opportunity to right the ship at home against Columbia on Saturday.
Virginia Draws UNC Greensboro at home
Virginia had solidified their place in our top 10 over the last couple of weeks, but gave up an equalizer to UNC Greensboro at home. This result should not have the same impact as the other two results, as the Spartans are currently a top 20 team. If anything, this result could help move UNCG further up the table after their wins the past week.
The Cavaliers will have another difficult home matchup this Sunday as they host Denver.
