College Soccer News National Team Of The Week – Week Ending September 22, 2013

Harrison Shipp – Senior – Forward – Notre Dame

The Irish Captain made a nice move to create space and slotted a shot into the lower left corner of the net in Notre Dame's 3-0 win over Michigan.  He also scored the lone goal for the Irish off an assist from Vince Cicciarelli in their 1-1 tie with Boston College. 

Achille Campion – Senior – Forward – UC Santa Barbara Campion scored twice to lead UCSB to a 3-1 win over Yale.  His first goal was at close range with an assist from Ismaila Jome and Drew Murphy.  Campion's second goal was a picture perfect scissor kick to the near post.  The win gave coach Tim Vom Steeg his 200th career win at the Division I level. 
Mark Wadid – Freshman – Forward – Penn State

Wadid netted the game winning goal for the Nittany Lions in their 1-0 win over Robert Morris and thier 1-0 win over Duquesne.  He slotted a shot into the lower right corner of the goal after receiving a through ball in the match with Robert Morris.  Against Duquesne he drove a shot into the back of the net from 8 yards out. 

Patrick Mullins – Senior – Forward – Maryland 

Mullins, who was at the center of the Terp attack, converted two penalty kicks to lead Maryland to a 3-1 win over Clemson at Riggs Field.  The second penalty kick resulted when he was pulled down in the box.  Maryland improves to 2-2-2 with a 2-0-1 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play.   

Geaton Caltabiano – Junior – Midfielder – UMBC

Caltabiano contributed a goal and an assist in UMBC's 3-2 overtime win over Navy.  He also scored a goal and contributed a helper to lead the Retrievers past previously undefeated Loyola (MD) 3-1.  Caltabiano has seven assists to date.  UMBC improves their record to 7-0-0.  

Jaime Velasco – Sophomore – Midfielder – Portland

Velasco scored twice to help spark Portland to a 3-0 win over Oregon State.  His first goal was a chip shot over the Oregon State netminder. His second score came as a result of a failed clearance that he alertly controlled and placed in the back of the net. Portland has now won three straight.   

Steve Birnbaum – Senior – Defender – California

Birnbaum continues to be an impact player on both sides of the ball for the Golden Bears. This weekend he added a goal in Cal's 3-0 victory over Colgate and in their 3-1 win over the College of Charleston.  He also has been part of a very steady California defensive.  

Connor Drechsler – Senior – Defender – Cal Poly

Drechsler played a role in Cal Poly's 2-0 win over San Francisco and 3-2 victory over Yale. In each contest he directed a header into the back of the net and played a key role in anchoring the Mustang defense. Cal Poly has won four straight to up their record to 6-2-0.  

Chris Makowski – Junior – Defender – Syracuse

Makowski was part of a very solid Orange defensive effort that helped produce a 1-0 win over Connecticut and a 2-1 victory over Duke on the road in ACC play.  He also added an additional element to the Syracuse attack.  The Orange improve to 5-2-0.   

Zach Kovacevic – Junior – Defender – Bradley

Kovacevic's goal 32 seconds into the second stanza proved to be the game-winner in Bradley's 2-0 win over Air Force.  He also was a key part of a Bradley defense that limited Denver and Air Force to just nine combined shots on goal in two games.  Bradley is now 4-2-1. 

Devin Cook – Sophomore – Goalkeeper – Coastal Carolina

Cook anchored a solid Coastal Carolina defensive effort that shutout Presbyterian College 4-0 and VCU 1-0. Cook had three saves in the contest with Presbyterian and four saves in the victory over VCU including a key stop on a penalty kick. The Chanticleers have won four straight to improve to 5-2-0.
