College Soccer News National Team Of The Week – Week Ending October 27, 2013

Kyle Parker – Sophomore – Forward – Charlotte

Parker drove the rebound of teammate Tyler Gibson's shot inside the far post and placed another shot inside the far post that was set up by a double assist from teammates Will Mayhew and Gentile Giuseppe to play a key role in Charlotte's 3-1 resume building win over Clemson at Transamerica Field.  The 49ers improve their record to 6-5-3.

Jordan Tyler – RS Junior – Forward – Penn State

Tyler scored with just a few minutes remaining in regulation to knot the score with Northwestern at 1-1 to send the game into overtime.  During overtime he netted the game-winning goal after receiving a nice pass from teammate Connor Maloney.  With the win Penn State clinched the number one seed in the Big Ten Tourney and improved their record to 10-3-1 overall with a 5-0-0 mark in conferece play. 

Darius Madison – Sophomore – Forward – Virginia

Madison scored unassisted from eighteen and six yards out to lead Virginia to a big 2-0 on-the-road victory over Notre Dame in an ACC match-up. Madison was on top of his game and did a great job of finding ways to penetrate a very tough Irish defense. Virginia improves to 7-3-4 overall with a 3-2-4 mark in ACC play.  Madison has scored a total of five goals so far this year.  

Stephen Baker – Senior – Forward – Penn

Baker was the catalyst for a determined Penn team that came from behind to secure a hard fought 3-2 win over Yale.  His game-winning goal came when he skillfully deposited the rebound of a shot by teammate Alec Neumann that deflected off of Duke Lacroix into the back of the net.  He also provided the assists out of a corner kick on the goals of teammates Matt Poplawski and Jonny Dolezal.  Penn improves to 6-6-1 with a 3-0-1 mark in Ivy League play.     

Mitchell Alvarez – Junior – Midfielder – UC Irvine

Alverez alertly netted two game-winning goals to help the Anteaters secure two good wins. He controlled a loose ball in the box and placed it just inside the right post in UC Irvine's 2-0 win over UC Riverside.  He also controlled and placed the rebound of teammate Mats Bjurman's chip shot into the back of the net to give UC Irvine the edge they needed to top CS Northridge. 

Nazmi Albadawi – Senior – Midfielder – N.C. State

Albadawi returned from injury to score two goals and contriubute an assist to lead the Wolfpack past Virginia Tech 3-2.  N.C. State coach Kelly Findley stated, "It's great to have Nazmi back."  His first goal was from ten yards out with an assist from Alex Martinez. His second goal came out of a throw-in with Martiez again contributing the helper. Albadawi provided the assist on teammate Nick Surkamp's goal.  The Wolfpack improve to 6-4-4 overall. 

Ali Al-Gashamy – Sophomore – Midfielder – Gardner-Webb 

Al-Gashamy and his Runnin' Bulldog teammates had a productive week with a 5-0 win over UNC Asheville and a 2-0 win over Campbell in Big South Conference play. Al-Gashamy produced a goal and two assists in the contest with UNC Asheville. He also added the insurance goal in Gardner-Webb's win over the Fighting Camels of Campbell. 

Matt Walker – Senior – Midfielder – Xavier

Walker scored twice to help Xavier secure a 2-1 win over Providence.  He also made a nice move to create the space he needed to find the back of the net in Xavier's 3-0 win over Seton Hall.  Walker and his teammates are making big plays and as a result the Musketeers have reeled off five straight wins to improve to 9-5-2 overall with a 5-2-0 mark in Big East Confernce action.   

Ignacio Maganto – Junior – Midfielder – Iona

Maganto had a three goal and two assist week for the Gaels including two game-winning goals. He scored from fifteen yards out off an assist from teammate Franklin Castellanos and converted a header from inside the box in Iona's 4-1 win over Marist. He also scored from twelve yards out in overtime in Iona's 1-0 win over Niagara. Maganto now has seven goals to date. Iona is 7-6-1 with a 4-2-1 mark in MAAC play. 

Jacob VanCompernolle – Junior – Defender – UNCW 

VanCompernolle was a key part of a stout UNC-Wilmington defense that shutout the North Carolina Tar Heels 1-0 in Chapel Hill. He also was solid on the defensive side of the ball and contributed the assist on teammate Colin Bonner's goal to help the Seahawks top Delaware 2-1 in Colonial Athletic Assocaiation play.  UNCW improves to 8-5-1 with a 3-2-0 mark in CAA play.  

Winston Boldt – Junior – Goalkeeper – Army

Bolt continues to take care of business between the pipes for the Black Knights. This week he anchored an Army defense that shutout CCSU 2-0 and Lehigh 1-0 to record his eleventh shutout so far this year to become Army's all-time leader in shutouts. Army head coach Russell Payne stated, "Winston is a tremendous goalkeeper."  He added, "He has a lot of great attributes for that position."  Army is now 12-1-1 with a 6-0-0 mark in Patriot League action.
