Marco AfonsoMarco Afonso – Fifth Year Senior – Forward – UNCG – Afonso fired a one-timer into the back of the frame from inside the box in regulation to get the Spartans on the board. The goal was set up by a nice and gutsy move down the right flank and pass from JC Ngando. UNCG subsequently prevailed in a match that had to be decided by a penalty kick shootout after it was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and overtime. The goal was his fifth of the season. Midfielders Yves Borie and Alex Nagy also scored in Vermont’s 3-0 win over UCLA in the Sweet Sixteen. The Catamounts improve to 16-3-2 before a sold out crowd at Virtue Field in Burlington and advance to the Elite Eight where they will face Syracuse on the road on Sunday.
Bertin Jacquesson – Junior – Forward – Pittsburgh – Jacquesson earns back-to-back nods on the College Soccer News Team of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal with time winding down in Pitt’s come from behind 2-1 win over Kentucky to advance to the Elite Eight for the third season in a row. Pitt improves to 11-4-5 and will host Portland on Saturday with a trip to the College Cup on the line.
Scotty Taylor Headshot 2022Scotty Taylor – Senior – Forward – Duke – Taylor scored the lone goal of the match in the closing minutes of the first stanza when he converted a heel flick out of a corner kick with an assist from forward Miguel Ramirez in Duke’s 1-0 win over FIU at Koskinen Stadium in Durham. Duke improves to 13-1-4 and moves forward to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2006 and the first under head coach John Kerr.
Leibold HS 22Giona Leibold – Sophomore – Midfielder – Syracuse – Leibold scored out of a counter attack in the 83rd minute of play after receiving a throw from goalkeeper Russell Shealy and making a move off the dribble to create the space he needed to convert the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over a determined Cornell team. The goal was Leibold’s fifth on the season. The Orange improve to 16-2-4 and secure a spot in the Elite Eight for the second time under head coach Ian McIntyre and the first time since 2015. Syracuse will host Vermont.
Probo 2022 Head ShotGiorgio Probo – Sophomore – Midfielder – Creighton – Probo, who transferred in from Iowa Western Community College where he was the Junior College Player of the Year, contributed the helper out of a corner kick on midfielder Mark O’Neill’s goal. He also converted a penalty kick that was awarded when forward Duncan McGuire was fouled in the box to score what proved to be the game-winning goal in the Bluejays 2-1 win over Tulsa on the road. A red hot Creighton team improves to 12-4-6 and advances to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2015.
O'Neil 2022 Head ShotMark O’Neill – Sophomore – Midfielder – Creighton – O’Neill converted a header out of a corner kick to net the equalizer in Creighton’s 2-1 come from a goal down win on the road over Tulsa. He was also part of a Bluejay defense that tightened up as the game progressed holding a good Tulsa team to a total of only five shots on goal. Creighton wins its six consecutive game including three in NCAA Tournament play to improve to 12-4-6 to punch their ticket to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2015. The Bluejays will travel once again to take on Duke in Durham on Saturday.
EganNoah Egan- Senior – Defender – Vermont – Egan put in a full 90 minute shift as a key ingredient in a Vermont defense that limited UCLA to only two shots on goal in route to a 3-0 shutout win over the Bruins. Vermont is now 16-3-2 and advances to the Elite Eight where they will face Syracuse on the road next Saturday.

Photo By \GHF#2\Brett Bebej – Senior – Defender – Indiana – Bebej came up with the big play the Hoosiers needed to top a very good Marshall team 1-0 when he decisively placed a header out of a corner kick into the back of the frame. Senior forward Ryan Wittenbrink served in a picture perfect ball to set up what proved to be the lone goal in a hard fought contest. The goal was Bebej’s third of the year and sixth of his career. A history rich Indiana team under head coach Todd Yeagley advances to the Elite Eight for an amazing 28th time where they will face UNCG in Greensboro on Saturday.
Delentz Pierre Head ShotDelentz Pierre – Junior – Defender – Portland – Pierre’s header proved to be the difference maker in Portland’s 1-0 win over a very competitive Western Michigan team. The Pilots improve to 15-2-3 and punch their ticket to the Elite Eight for the first time since the 1995 season. He was also part of a Pilot defense that recorded its 10th shutout of the year.
Isaac BrinerIsaac Briner – Sophomore – Goalkeeper – UNCG – Briner took over for Spartan goalkeeper Niclas Wild when the UNCG and Stanford contest went into a penalty kick shootout after the score was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and overtime. Briner came up with three crucial stops in the shootout helping UNCG prevail 3-1 to secure a spot in the Elite Eight. The number 12 seeded Spartans under head coach Chris Rich improve to 13-1-6 and earn the right to host number 13 seeded Indiana at UNCG Soccer Stadium on Saturday with a trip to the College Cup on the line.
