The prognosis for continued success is favorable with nine starters back along with several transfers who could contribute immediately. What is not so good is that the two starters who are not returning are All-American goalkeeper Emily Alvardo, a three-year starter, and All-American midfielder Yazmeen Ryan Ryan who was a four-year starter and three-time All-Big 12 First Team selection. On the plus side, All-American forward Grace Collins (8g, 2a), the 2020 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, returns along with senior forward Messiah Bright (4g, 1a), a 2020 All Big 12 Second Team selection. She will be joined up-top by junior Payton Linnehan (5g, 7a), a 2020 All-Big Ten Second Team member. The 2019 National Champions had a rare down year in 2020 with a 6-6-2 overall record and 5-4-1 mark in Pac-12 play that kept them out of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 22 years. With All-American forward Madison Haley set to return in 2021 after being hampered with injury in 2020 and All-American defender Naomi Girma set to return after missing the 2020 season due to injury the chances are pretty good that the Cardinal will rebound in 2021.
