Carolina Cup Men’s Soccer Preview: UNCG travels to UNCW for Round 1 Matchup

UNC Greensboro made the Round of 16 in 2025 and, because of their success have several players who have moved on to the professional level. This spring tournament will be a good opportunity for Head Coach Chris Rich to assess where his group stands now and how some new faces fit in as they prepare for the 2026 campaign.

UNC Wilmington was knocked out early in the CAA First Round in 2025 and will be looking to use this spring tournament as an opportunity to build momentum for the year ahead.

UNC Greensboro’s returning players to watch

Seth Wilson – Goalkeeper – Wilson has started 35 games in his Spartan career, with 12 shutouts. One of his memorable moments from 2025 was when he made 10 saves against #2-ranked Virginia in the NCAA Tournament to help the program advance to the Round of 16.

Trym Linberg – Defender – Linberg was named to the SoCon All-Freshman team in 2025 and finished the season with 23 appearances and three starts. The young defender had four goal contributions (1g/3a) and will be looking to expand his role in 2026.

Steven Hernandez – Forward – Hernandez had a career year in 2025 with 10 goal contributions (5g/5a) in 20 starts and will be looking to add to his career tally of 19 goal contributions (10g/9a) in 2026.

UNC Wilmington’s Gyamfi is a young prospect to keep an eye on

UNCW’s Osei Gyamfi has been a young prospect on a lot of radars for the past two years. He was on Top Drawer Soccer’s postseason top 100 Freshman list after his 2024 season, and was USL2’s 2025 Young Player of the Year while playing with Sporting JAX.

In two collegiate seasons, Gyamfi has tallied 13 goal contributions (5g/8a) in 31 starts and will be looking to reach another level of production in 2026.
