There were multiple top 25 upsets in women’s college soccer this past week, but none bigger than Mississippi State taking down #1 Tennessee. Washington’s defense held strong, setting up an upset of #15 USC. BYU’s Paiton Collins had another solid outing in goal, and Mya Brandon scored her first career goal for Florida State.
Here’s a look at our women’s soccer award winners for Week 5:
Team of the Week
Mississippi State
The Bulldogs took on the Nation’s #1 Tennessee and were able to come away with all three points at home. It was the second year in a row that Mississippi State has beaten a #1-ranked team, and they completed the come-from-behind 3-2 victory in the final minutes of action. Mississippi State’s attack has been clicking as they have now scored at least three goals in their last three games (11 goals in total during that time).
Offensive Player of the Week
Ally Perry – Senior – Forward – Mississippi State
Perry had a career game this past week as she helped Mississippi State topple #1 Tennessee. She was involved in all three of the Bulldogs’ goals (2g/1a) en route to their 3-2 come-from-behind upset of the Volunteers. Perry now has eight goal contributions (3g/5a) on the season and will be getting set to hit the road to take on Texas tomorrow.
Defensive Player of the Week
Anna Menti – Junior – Washington
Menti helped Washington keep a clean sheet and get the upset victory over #15 USC 1-0 on the road. The junior defender played the full 90 minutes en route to the Huskies’ fourth clean sheet of the season. Menti is leading all Washington outfield players in minutes this year and will likely be paramount to the team’s success tomorrow night as they get set to take on Northwestern.
Goalkeeper of the Week
Paiton Collins – Sophomore – BYU
Collins kept her fourth shutout in her last five games this past Friday against Utah Valley. She made four saves and is now sporting an 84% save percentage on the season. BYU has now climbed to #10 in the nation and will take on Arizona State in Tempe tomorrow night in what should be a good test, as the Sun Devils are undefeated through eight games.
Freshman of the Week
Mya Brandon – Defender – Florida State
Brandon scored her first collegiate goal this past weekend as Florida State went on the road to Syracuse and dominated 4-0. It was also Brandon’s career high in minutes played as she helped the Seminoles keep a third straight clean sheet.
Florida State’s next game is tonight against North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
