College Soccer News – National Team of the Week – Week Ending November 10, 2019

The College Soccer News National Team of the Week features difference makers on both sides of the ball who played a key role in the success that their teams enjoyed during the week.  

Preston Judd

Denver

Judd scored twice to give  Denver the punch they needed on the offensive side of the ball to top Purdue Fort Wayne 3-1 in Summit League play. He placed a shot inside the far post from thirty yards out and sent a bending ball into the frame from outside the box. Denver will face Oral Roberts in the semifinals of the Summit League Tournament. 

Matt Thorsheim

Bucknell

 

Thorsheim found the back of the net twice and a stout Bucknell defense enabled the number six seeded Bison to  defeat number three seeded Navy 2-0 in the Patriot League Tournament. Thorsheim converted a penalty kick and scored out of a free kick from just outside the box. He now has seven goals so far this year. Bucknell advances to the tournament semifinals where they will face number one seed Lehigh.  

Gerit Wintermeyer

Bradley

Wintermeyer came through in the clutch for the Braves with a three goal week.  He scored the game-winning goal with only twenty-three seconds remaining in Bradley's 2-1 win over Western Illinois and scored twice including the game-winner in Bradley's 2-1 win over Evansville. Number three seed Bradley will face number six seed Evansville in the first round of the MVC Tournament.   

Albert Pedra

UNCG

Pedra has been a difference maker for UNCG. He followed up a hat trick in the Spartans 3-1 win over ODU with a crucial two goal effort to help UNCG come from two goals down to defeat a game Belmont team 3-2. Pedra drew and converted a penalty kick and placed a shot into the side netting in overtime in the win over Belmont. UNCG and Mercer will square off in the SoCon Tournament final. 

Jamil Roberts

Marshall 

Roberts scored twice in the first half to play a key role in Marshall's 2-1 win over FIU in Miami. The win enabled the Thundering Herd to secure its first ever CUSA regular season title. Joao Souza provided the assist on Roberts' first goal and Vitor Dias on the second. Marshall improves to 13-2-3 and will face the winner of the Kentucky and FAU match in the upcoming CUSA Tournament.  

Diego Arribas

Fairleigh Dickinson

Arribas was a catalyst on the offensive side of the ball for the Knights contributing three assists in their 5-0 win over Mount Saint Mary's. The win enabled Fairleigh Dickinson to punch their ticket to the upcoming Northeast Conference Tournament where they will face number one seed Saint Francis. 

Justin Sukow

Loyola Chicago

Sukow found the back of the net twice in Loyola Chicago's 3-0 win over Valparaiso in MVC play. Chase Wright made a nice play to set up Sukow's first goal. Sukow alertly took advantage of a miscue on the defensive side of the ball to set up his second goal. The Ramblers will square off with the winner of the Bradley and Evansville game in the  MVC Tournament. 

Soren Jensen

Central Arkansas 

Jensen scored in a variety of ways driving a shot into the bottom right corner, converting a header, and sending a bending ball into the back of the net for a three goal evening in Central Arkansas' 4-1 win over Howard. The Bears improve to 10-6-1 overall and secure the Sun Belt Conference regular season title with a 4-1-0 mark in league play. 

Esben Wolf

Providence

Wolf made a nice move to create the space he needed to score after receiving a cross from Tiago Mendonca to net the insurance goal in Providence's 2-0 win over Saint John's. He also scored out of a corner kick and contributed a helper on teammate Paulo Lima's goal to help the Friars top Marquette 3-0 in the first round of the Big East Conference Tournament. 

Arnaud Deniel

Oregon State 

Deniel was at the center of a solid and well organized Oregon State backline that limited Stanford to two shots on goal in route to a scoreless tie and limited California to one shot on goal in a 1-0 win. Oregon State is 8-5-2 with a 5-2-2 mark in Pac-12 play. The Beavers conclude regular season play when they host Washington on Friday. 

Achille Robin

Bowling Green

Robin's goal gave Bowling Green the edge they needed to top Wright State University 1-0. He and goalkeeper Anthony Mwembia were also key ingredients in a Falcon defense that shutout NIU 1-0. Bowling Green improves to 11-6-1 with a rematch with NIU in the quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament next on their dance card.  

Peder Kristiansen

Rhode Island

Kristiansen helped the Rams win their ninth consecutive contest by skillfully sending a bending ball into the back of the frame out of a corner kick and contributing two helpers as Rhode Island rolled past Davidson 7-3 in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Rhode Island improves to 13-3-2 and advances to the semifinals to tangle with Fordham.  

Jake Haupt

UC Davis

Haupt earns another spot on the CSN National Team of the Week after assisting on the goals scored by teammates Max Arfsten and Adam Mickelson and playing a part in a solid defense that enabled UC Davis to secure a 2-0 win over Cal Sate Fullerton. The Aggies advance to the Big West Tournament championship contest where they will face a UCSB team that they tied 1-1 during regular season play..  

Andrew Thomas

RS Sophomore

Goalkeeper

Stanford

Thomas made the key stops he needed to make to place the Cardinal in position to win. He had four saves in Stanford's 0-0 tie with Oregon State on the road and five stops in their 1-0 win on the road over Washington.  Thomas has eight solo shutouts so far this year with a 0.60 goals against average. Stanford hosts California on Thursday to conclude regular season play.
