Carolina Cup Preview: Virginia Tech and Duke Battle for Spot in the Finals

The final round of games before the finals is underway today. First up is Virginia Tech and Duke, which is a matchup that could decide a spot in the finals against North Carolina on 4/12. A triad rivalry matchup between High Point and UNCG will round out the weekend.

Duke at Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech has allowed the fewest goals in the tournament (1 GA) and will look to keep its stingy defensive streak going. Their defense will be tested against Duke’s Ulfur Bjornsson, who sits second in the Golden Boot race with four goals. Tech’s Chase Vazquez will look to add to his goal tally (2).

UNCG at High Point

These triad teams are tied on four points and are looking to climb the table for a higher placement game on 4/12. UNCG’s defense has been sound, allowing only two goals through three games, while High Point’s Aidan Morrison and UNCG’s Steven Hernandez are both their team’s leading goal scorers through the tournament with two goals apiece.

Wake Forest at NC State

This matchup isn’t till Tuesday, and the NC State Wolfpack will be eyeing the Virginia Tech/Duke result closely, as that result will decide whether they have a chance at making the finals against North Carolina. NC State’s defense is tied for the second-best in the Carolina Cup (2 GA), while Wake Forest’s Chandler Young is the leading goalscorer between either team (2).
