College Soccer News - National Team of the Week - Week Ending September 30, 2018

Sven Koenig - Senior - Forward - Creighton Koenig scored twice to help power the Bluejays past Jacksonville 2-1. He also netted the game-winning goal in Creighton's 1-0 win over Seton Hall in a Big East Contest.  The Bluejays have won six straight to improve to 7-1-1 with a 3-0-0 mark in conference play.  
Giovanni Montesdeoca - Sophomore - Forward - UNC  Montesdeoca made a nice move to create the space he needed to find the back of the net after receiving a cross from Nils Bruening and converted a header with a double assist from Mauricio Pineda and Milo Garvanian to propel the Tar Heels past Clemson 2-0. North Carolina is 7-1-0 with a 3-0-0 mark in ACC play.   
Tate Robertson - Senior - Forward - Bowling Green  The Bowling Green team captain has been an impact player since arriving on campus in 2015.  Robertson scored two picture perfect goals in the first half of play to give the Falcons the edge they needed to top Valparaiso 2-1.  Bowling Green will seek to add to their win total when they host Akron on Saturday.    
Emil Elveroth - Sophomore - Forward - UNCW  Elveroth had a productive week of play.  He scored and contributed an assist on teammate Cesar Cruz's goal to help the Seahawks thump the College of Charleston 4-1.  He also scored and contributed a helper on David Lozano's goal in UNCW's 2-0 win over JMU.  The Seahawks, who will square off with North Carolina on Tuesday, improve to 7-1-1.   
Alec Philippe - Junior - Forward - Wright State Philippe scored and produced two helpers in Wright State's 6-2 win over Duquesne.  He also added two goals and an assist to play a key role in Wright State's 4-2 victory over Detroit Mercy in Horizon League play. Philippe has nine goals to date for the Raiders who are now  8-0-1. Wright State travels to face Virginia on Tuesday night. 
Ilias Kosmidis - Junior - Forward - HIgh Point  Kosmidis converted a penalty kick and sloted a shot just inside the right post after receiving a pass from Jonathan Bolanos in HPU's 2-0 win over Appalachian State. He also drove a header into the back of the frame served in by Ryan Inman in the Panther's 1-0 win over Winthrop.  High Point improves to 8-1-0 with a 3-0-0 mark in Big South play.  
Diogo Pacheco - RS Sophomore - Midfielder - Akron  Pacheco contributed a hat trick including the golden goal in overtime to give Akron a big momentum building come from behind 4-3 win over VCU. The Zips have now won three straght to improve to 4-3-1.   
Vlad Jandric - Junior - Midfielder - Cleveland State Jandric scored three times to lead Cleveland State to a 3-1 win over UIC in Horizon League play.  The hat trick was the first for a Viking since the 2013 season.  Cleveland State improves to 2-5-1 with a 1-2-1 mark in conference play.  
Bruno Lapa - Junior - Midfielder - Wake Forest  Lapa has been a force for the Demon Deacons.  He  fournd the back of the net twice and contributed an assist in Wake Forest's 5-1 win over Davidson.  He also netted what proved to be the game-winning goal off a nice give and go with teammate Logan Gdula in Wake Forest's 4-2 win over Duke.  The Deacons are 10-0-0. 
Amir Bashti - Senior - Midfielder - Stanford Bashti scored and contributed an assist on Logan Panchot's goal in Stanford's 3-0 win over San Diego State.  He also scored and contributed a helper on Charlie Wehan's goal to help Stanford top UCLA 3-0.  The Cardinal improve to 5-1-3 with a 2-0-0 mark in Pac-12 play.  
Justin Wright - Senior - Defender - UC Davis  Wright, who was at the right place at the right time, came through in the clutch for UC Davis with a two goal performance that included the  golden goal in overtime to propel the Aggies to a 2-1 win over Sacramento State. UC Davis improves to 7-1-2 overall.  
Marcus Lindqvist - Senior - Defender - Hofstra Lindqvist was a key part of a Hofstra defense that shutout Drexel 1-0 and William and Mary 4-0. He sent a left footed shot into the back of the net off a give-and-go with teammate Luke Brown in the win over Drexel and contributed the helper on Matthew Vowinkel's goal in Hofstra's win over William and Mary. The Pride improves to 5-3-3.   
Elliot Panicco - RS Junior - Goalkeeper - Charlotte Pancicco had a nine save week during which he anchored a stout Charlotte defense that shutout Wofford 2-0 and UAB 1-0.  His saves included a huge stop of a penalty kick in the contest with UAB.  Charlotte improves to 5-2-1 and secures their first win of the year in CUSA play.  

 

College Soccer News - National Team of the Week - Week Ending September 23, 2018

Clutch performances on both sides of the ball are reflected in the CSN National Team of the Week.  

Benji Michel - Junior - Forward - Portland  Michel scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with a double assist from Greg Tracey and Esteban Calvo in Portland's 2-1 win over Oregon State.  The goal was Michel's seventh so far this season. Portland is off to its best start since the 1989 season with a 6-0-2 record. 
Achara - Junior - Forward - Georgetown  Achara sent a header into the back of the frame after receiving a well played cross from defender Dylan Nealis in Georgetown's 1-0 on the road win over Duke. He also netted the game-winning goal with a double assist from Ethan Lochner and Jacob Montes in the Hoyas 2-1 win over DePaul in a Big East play.  Georgetown improves to 5-2-1.   
Andre Shinyashiki - Senior - Forward - Denver Shinyashiki scored four goals to help Denver come from two goals down to top a determined Omaha team 4-3.  Three of his goals came in a span of just under four minutes in the early part of the second half. His fourth goal, the game-winner, came in the seventy-ninth minute of play in what was one of the most explosive contests to date in the 2018 season.   
Niklas Brodacki - Junior - Forward - Central Arkansas  Broadacki found the back of the net twice to help power Central Arkansas to a 3-0 win over Bradley in a key Missouri Valley Conference contest.  His first goal was a chip shot from six yards out with an assit from Christian Ilia.  His second score was from just inside the box with an assist from Jake Bates.  The Bears improve to 3-3-1.   
Jonathan Jimenez - Junior - Forward - Pacific  Jimenez scored the lone goal from just inside the penalty area in Pacific's 1-0 win over Stanford.  He also scored and assisted on the goals of teammates Tariq Branche and Cooper Riley to play a key role in Pacific's 4-2 win over UC Irvine.  The Tigers are undefeated in their past five contests to improve to 6-2-1. 
Mathias Ebbesen - Senior - Midfielder - Drexel  Ebbesen sent a loose ball back into the net from six yards out and converted a header out of a corner kick in Drexel's 2-0 win over Bucknell.  He also netted a penalty kick in overtime to give Drexel the edge they needed to top Elon 3-2.  The Dragons are 6-1-1. 
Matthew Chow - Junior - Midfielder - Brown Chow scored the game-winning goal in the final minute of the second overtime period to give Brown a 1-0 win over previosuly undefeated and unscored upon Rhode Island. Brown improves to 3-3-0.  The Bears face Boston University on Tuesday in their last non-conference contest before beginning Ivy League play.  
Alex Summerfield - Junior - Defender - Georgia State  Summerfield skillfully chipped a shot into the back of the frame to give Georgia State the lone goal they needed to top Mercer 1-0.  He was also part of a solid Panther defensive effort.  Georgia State improves to 6-2-0.  The Panthers have won six straight contests for the first time since the 1987 season.   
Simon Blotko - Senior - Defender - N.C. State The Wolfpack captain contributed an assist on teammate Tanner Roberts' game-winning strike and anchored a very solid backline that shutout a good Virginia Tech team 1-0 in ACC play. N.C. State secures their first win over the Hokies since 2013 and improves to 6-1-0.  
Andrew Gutman - Senior - Defender - Indiana  The Hoosier defender scored after receiving a pass from Griffin Dorsey  and contributed the assist on the goals scored by Justin Rennicks and Dorsey in Indiana's 5-0 win on the road over Evansville.  Indiana wins their seventh straight contest to improve to 7-1-0.  
Adrien Awana - Junior - Defender - Manhattan  Awana's header in the 90th minute of play out of a corner kick served in by freshman James Cotter gave Manhattan the edge they needed to upset Fordham 1-0 in the Battle of the Bronx.  Manhattan secures its first ever win over a ranked opponent and improves to 7-1-0.   
Patrik Gujic - Freshman - Goalkeeper - UMass Lowell  Gujic had six saves including several at point blank range to play a key role in UMass Lowell's 2-0 win over Vermont in a big America East Conference contest.  The River Hawks improve to 6-1-2 overall. 
Simon Lefebvre - Junior - Goalkeeper - Temple  Lefebvre had seven saves to anchor a stellar Temple defense along with backs Zach Brown, Akeem Prawl, Nick Sarver and Pierre Cayet that shutout UCF 1-0 in an American Athletic Conference contest.  Temple is now 3-4-0.  

 

College Soccer News - National Team of the Week - Week Ending September 16, 2018

Offensive explosions occurred coast to coast this week with more than the average number of players posting hat tricks to help power their team to victory. Playmakers are emerging on both sides of the ball as teams begin to gel and establish their 2018 identity.   

Javier Carbonell - Senior - Forward - Georgia Southern Carbonell displayed a variety of finishing skills when he placed four in the back of the net to lead Georgia Southern to a 5-3 come from behind win over Jacksonville University.  Carbonell scored out of a free kick, converted a penalty kick, drove a shot into the net from twenty-five yards out, and converted a header out of a free kick served in by Aldair Cortes.  The Eagles halt a two game losing streak to improve to 3-2-1.  
Andre Shinyashiki - Senior - Forward - Denver  Shinyashiki had a five goal week. He placed a shot into the bottom right corner of the net after receiving a through ball and curled a shot into the far corner of the frame in Denver's 3-1 win over Harvard.  He also scored three times to lead Denver past San Francisco.  Shinyashiki has scored a total of thirteen goals so far this year. Denver improves to 6-0-1.  
Damian German - Senior - Forward - San Diego State German played a key role in San Diego State's 2-0 win over Brown.  He made a nice move off the dribble after receiving a pass from Emil Kjellker to create the space and angle needed to drive a picture perfect shot into the near post.  He also scored after running onto a well played long ball from  AJ Valenzuela that set up a one-on-one with the goalkeeper.  San Diego State has now won three in a row to improve to 3-2-1. 
Abdou Mbacke Thiam - Senior - Forward - UConn Mbacke Thiam has been an impact player at Connecticut since arriving on campus in 2015. This week he produced a hat trick including the game-winning goal in extra time to propel the Huskies past Loyola Maryland 3-2.  He converted a header from inside the box, placed the rebound of a blocked shot into the back of the frame, and nailed the game-winning header out of a free kick in the 106th minute of the match.  UConn improves to 4-2-0.  
Shak Adams - Junior - Forward - FGCU  Adams netted a hat trick to help propel FGCU  past instate rival South Florida 5-3.  Adams' first score came when he rose to drive a header into the net after receiving a cross from Dennis Zapata. He scored his second goal of the evening after running onto a well played through ball from teammate Jordan Lue. Adams' third goal was a shot to the near post that was set up by a nice move and pass from defender Titouan Le Menec. FGCU is 3-2-0.  
Cal Jennings - Junior - Forward - UCF  Jennings, who had a five goal and one assist week, was at the heart of an explosive UCF attack.  He scored twice and contributed an assist in UCF's 3-1 on the road win over FIU.  He also scored three times, recording his second hat trick of the 2018 season, to play a key role in the Knight's 4-2 come from behind win on the road over Stetson.  UCF improves to 5-1-1. 
Jesus Perez - Junior - Midfielder - UIC  Perez makes good things happen. He contributed the assist out of a corner kick on teammate Peter Becht's header in UIC's 2-0 win over DePaul.  He also converted a header with a double assist from Markell Saddler and Manny Cerritos and scored from six yards out after receiving a pass from Alwin Seitz to play a key role in UIC's 4-0 win over IUPUI in Horizon League play.  The Flames are 6-1-0. 
Trevor Swartz - RS Senior - Midfielder - Indiana  Swartz is a playmaker as reflected in his four assist week.  He contributed an assist on the goals scored by AJ Palazzolo and Justin Rennicks in Indiana's 2-1 win over Notre Dame.  He also contributed a helper on Andrew Gutman's two goals in IU's 3-1 win over Wisconsin in a Big Ten Conference contest.  Swartz has a total of eight assists in seven contests this year. Indiana improves to 6-1-0.  
Devin Boyce - Junior - Midfielder - Saint Louis  Boyce scored twice and added a helper on teammate John Klein's goal to lead the Billikens past Tulsa 3-0 on the road. He also assisted on Klein's goal in Saint Louis' 2-1 victory over Central Arkansas.  Saint Louis has now won four straight to improve to 3-1-2.  They will host rival SIUE on Friday, September 21 in what shapes up to be a very competitive match.  
Alex Greive - Sophomore - Midfielder - Northern Kentucky Greive had a very productive five assist week to help Northern Kentucky secure a 3-0 win over Evansville and a 2-1 win over Green Bay.  He contributed a helper on the goals scored by Connor Probert, Alex Willis and Calvin Murphy in the win over Evansville and assisted on the goals scored by Willis and Rikard Lindqvist in the victory over Green Bay.  The Norse improve to 6-1-0.  
Matt Nance - GS - Defender - Xavier  After missing the 2017 season due to injury, Nance returned to the pitch to make a positive impact on both sides of he ball for the Musketeers.  He was part of a solid Xavier defensive effort in a 0-0 tie with Kentucky and contributed three assists in the Musketeers come-from-behind 3-2 on the road win against Georgetown in a Big East Conferene contest.  Xavier improves to 3-0-3.  
Ben Thornton - Senior - Defender - Western Michigan  Thornton was a key contributor in Western Michigan's wins over Cincinatti and UMBC. He scored out of a corner kick put in play by Cameron Sipple in the Broncos 2-0 on the road win over Cincinnati.  He also was part of a stout Western Michigan defense that allowed just one shot on goal in route to a 2-0 victory over UMBC.  The Broncos have rebounded with three straight wins to improve to 4-4-0.  
Josh Lagudah - Junior - Goalkeeper - Loyola Chicago  Lagudah anchored a Rambler defense that shutout a very good SIUE team 2-0. Lagudah had an impressive eight save evening that included several huge saves at point blank range from inside the box. It was a gutsy performance by Lagudah and his Loyola Chicago teammates.  The Ramblers halt a two-game losing streak to improve to 2-3.   

College Soccer News - National Team of the Week - Week Ending September 9, 2018

Omir Fernandez - Sophomore - Forward - Wake Forest  Fernandez did a great job of finishing the opportunities that came his way.  He sloted a shot into the far post after receiving a cross from Logan Gdula and one-timed a shot into the back of the frame after receiving a cross from Justin McMaster in Wake Forest's 3-0 win over N.C. State. Brad Dunwell also assisted on the first goal and Bruno Lapa on the second.  Fernandez also scored in Wake Forest's 4-1 win over Presbyterian.  
Ryan Sierakowski - Senior - Forward - Michigan State Sierakowski scored and contributed an assist on the goals of teammates Hunter Barone and Robbie Cort in Michigan State's 5 to 1 win over UC Riverside.  He also scored the Spartans' first goal with a helper from Michael Pimott in their 3-0 win over Bowling Green. MIchigan State is now 4-0-1.  The Spartans will host a good Oakland team on Monday.   
JJ Williams - Junior - Forward - Kentucky Williams scored twice in the first half of play to create the momentum that the Wildcats needed to upset Louisville 3-0.  His first score came after receiving a long pass from Tanner Hummel. His second goal was a header inside the near post with Marcel Meinzer and Hummel assisting.  Williams also added the insurance goal with Meinzer providing the helper in Kentucky's 2-0 win over UAB in CUSA play.  The Wildcats are 4-0-0 for the first time since the 2009 campaign. 
Simon Enstrom - Senior - Forward - Boston College  Enstrom came up through in the clutch for the Eagles in their ACC 3-2 come from behind win over Clemson.  He provided the assist on teammate Callum Johnson goal, converted a header out of a corner kick served in by Kristofer Konradsson to tie the game at 2-2, and scored the game-winning goal from the top of the box in the eighty-ninth minute of play.  Boston College improves to 2-0-2.   
Matt McDonnell - Junior - Forward - Boston University  McDonnell is a playmaker. The striker from Smithtown, New York scored twice in the second half of play to help the Terriers come from behind to top Massachusetts 3-2.  He placed a shot jpt ball into the right post after receiving a cross from Satchel Cortet and alertly controlled and sent a rebound into the back of the net that tied the contest at 2-2.  Freshman Kari Petursson then netted what proved to be the game-winning goal from twenty-five yards out. 
Shinya Kadono - Senior - Midfielder - California  Kadono had a banner evening scoring four goals and contributing an assist to help power California by Sacramento State 6-2. One of his goals was a penatly kick, one was a header, and two came out of the run of play. The Golden Bears also tied UC Riverside 0-0 on Sunday.  California is 3-1-1.  
Simen Hestnes - Senior - Midfielder - Xavier Hestnes scored and assisted on the goals of teammates Tomek Pauer and Samson Sergi to play a key role in Xavier's 3-1 win over crosstown rival Cincinnati.  The Musketeers improve to 2-0-2 overall.  Xavier has a tough contest coming up on Tuesday when they host a hot Kentucky squad.  
Tucker Bone - Senior - Midfielder - Air Force  Bone had a productive week of play.  He contributed a goal and assisted on teammate Austin Dewing's score in a 3-1 win over North Florida.  He also scored and provided the helper on Luis Martinez's goal in a 3-0 win over a very good Colgate team.  Air Force has won five straight to improve to 5-1-0 after beginning the season with a 2-1 loss on the road to Virginia Tech.  
Derek Waldeck - Junior - Midfielder - Stanford Waldeck drove the game-wnning goal into the near left post in Stanford's 2-0 on the road win over a good San Francisco team. Waldeck's score was set up by a nice pass from Logan Pancot and a back-heel flick from Zach Ryan.  Waldeck also utilized his left foot to serve in a corner kick that set up senior center back Adam Mosharrafa's header. Stanford improves to 1-0-3.  
Felician Dumas - Senior - Defender - Notre Dame Dumas contributed the assist on Patrick Berneski's header and sent a bending ball into the top right corner of the goal out of a free kick to score the game-winning goal in Notre Dame's 3-2 win over Syracuse in Atlantic Coast Conference play.  The Irish improve to 3-0-1. Notre Dame will be tested when they host highly regarded Indiana out of the Big Ten on Tuesday.  
Kolade Salaudeen - RS Freshman - Defender - Oregon State Salaudeen, who hails from South Croydon, England, was a key part of a solid Oregon State defense that shutout Penn State 1-0 and topped CSU Bakersfield 3-1. Oregon State is off to a 3-1-1 start.  Salaudeen and his Beaver teammates will  be tested on Monday when they host a UC Davis team that has been scoring in multiples.  
Sawyer Jackman - Senior - Goalkeeper - UIC  Jackman took care of business between the pipes for UIC.  He anchored a Flame defense that shutout Western Michigan 1-0 and contained a very good Oakland team on the road 4-1 in a key Horizon League contest.  Jackman came up with the big and timely saves he needed to make to give his team the oppotunity to prevail. After being upset by Drake, UIC rebounds with two good wins to improve to 4-1-0.
