College Soccer News - National Team of the Week - Week Ending October 14, 2018

The College Soccer News National Team of the Week reflects key individual performers and difference makers who played a key role in the success that their team achieved during the week.    

Gloire Amanda

Forward 

Oregon State

The freshman netted the lone goal with an assist from fellow freshman Sofiane Djeffal in Oregon State's 1-0 win over Stanford.  He also drove a shot into the back of the frame from the right side of the box with Djeffal again providing the helper in the Beavers' 2-1 win over California.

Daryl Dike

Forward 

Virginia 

The freshman from Edmon, Oklahoma sent an attempted clearance back into the frame and placed a shot into the far post to help Virginia top Denver 3-0. He also contributed a goal in Virginia's 4-1 on the road win over Clemson.  Virginia improves to 8-1-2 overall.

UNCW

The junior from Charlotte, North Carolina had a three goal week.  He scored from within the box after receiving a cross from Cesar Cruz and hit the back of the net from the top of the eighteen to power the Seahawks past Elon 2-0. He also scored in UNCW's 5-0 thumping of Belmont.  The  Seahawks are 10-2-1.

N.C. State

The Wolfpack sophomore from Orlando, Florida alertly scored from within the box in N.C. State's 2-0 win over Longwood.  He also made a nice move off the dribble to create the angle and space he needed to place a shot into the left post from fifteen yards out to give N.C. State the edge they needed to top UNC 1-0.  

Nico Solabarrieta

Forward

Albany 

The senior scored four goals in the second half of play to lead Allbany to a 6-2 win over American.  He also converted a penalty kick to open the scoring for the Great Danes in their 3-1 win over Vermont.  Solabarrieta has nine goals and three assists so far this season. .

James Madison

The junior came through in the clutch for the Dukes converting the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in JMU's 1-0 win over William and Mary in CAA play. He also added the insurance goal in JMU's 2-0 victory over Hofstra in CAA action.  The Dukes are 8-3-2 overall with a 6-1-0 mark in conference play.

Bowling Green 

The junior linkman came through with two magical game-winners  for the Falcons. He made a nice move to create the space he needed to send a blast into the back of the frame from ten yards out with three clicks remaining in o.t. to  give BGSU a 3-2 win over IUPUI. He also converted a header in extra time to propel the Falcons past NIU 2-1. 

Lucca Lacerda

Valparaiso 

Lacerda, a senior, scored the game-winner out of a free kick from outside the box and contributed the assist on teammate Akeem Bradford's goal in Valpo's 2-1 win over Eastern Illinois. He also scored from fifteen and thirty-five yards out to play a key role in Valpo's 2-0 on the road win over Bradley in MVC play.

Loyola Chicago

The redshirt senior added stability, composure, and toughness as part of a solid Rambler defense that shutout Xavier 1-0 and MVC foe Missouri State 1-0. Loyola Chicago secures two impressive wins to improve to 6-4-2 overall with a 2-0-2 mark in conference play.

Connecticut

The redshirt senior has been an integral part of the UConn defense since arriving on campus in 2014.  He was was a key part of a tenacious Connecticut defense that contained a high powered UCF attack in a scoreless American Athletic Conference Contest. The Huskies are 7-2-2 overall with a 2-0-2 mark in conference play. 

Andrew Gutman

Indiana 

The senior back drove a header into the net served in out of a corner kick by Austin Panchot and scored from close range with eighteen seconds remaining in regulation to give Indiana the edge they needed to top Maryland 2-1 in a Big Ten matchup. The Hoosiers up their record to 11-2-0 with a 5-0-0 mark in conference play.

The redshirt senior team captain was part of a Nittany Lion defense that shutout nonconference foe Stony Brook 3-0 and defeated Wisconsin 1-0 in a Big Ten contest.  He also contributed an assist on Jeremy Rafanello's game-winner in the contest with Wisconsin. 

Joel Sundell

Wright State

The junior netminder had an impressive seven save week  while anchoring a solid Wright State defense that shutout West Virginia 3-0 and Oakland 2-0.  The Raiders improve to 10-1-2 overall with a 4-0-1 mark in Horizon League play.

Lachlan McLean

SIUE 

The junior striker scored from six yards out with two minutes remaining to give SIUE the edge they needed to top IUPUI.  He also scored twice in the Cougar's  3-2 win over NIU. SIUE is 8-1-2 with a 1-0 mark in MAC play.

Charles Touche

Cornell

The sophomore forward scored three times to power the Big Red attack past Harvard 4-2. Cornell has won five straight to up their record to 8-2-0 with a 2-0-0 mark in Ivy League play. 

Thomas Ueland

Notre Dame

The senior forward was a catalyst in Notre Dame's 3-0 win over Northwestern and  2-1 win over Louisville.  He contributed an assist in the win over the Wildcats and drove a shot into the far post in the win over Louisville.  

Cal Jennings

UCF

The junior forward from Roswell, Georgia had a four goal and one assist week.  He scored twice and added a helper in UCF's win over Jacksonville and placed two shot into the back of the frame in UCF's 4-3 win over Tulsa.  UCF is 8-2-1. 

Jake Rudel

Saint Mary's 

The junior striker curled a shot into the back of the frame from outside the box and sent a header into the net in Saint Mary's 4-0 win over Pacific in a West Coast Conference constest.  The Gaels are a perfect 12-0-0.  

Derek MacKinnon

Saint Joseph

The senior midfielder netted the equalizing goal in Saint Joseph's 2-2 tie with LaSalle. He also added a key goal with a double assist from Alvin Dahn and Daniel Morales in the Hawk's 3-2 win over Fordham.  SJU improves to 7-3-2. 

Niko Klosterhalfen

Old Dominion

The senior midfieder scored twice including the game-winner in overtime to power ODU past William and Mary 3-2.  He also scored in the Monarch's 4-1 win over FAU.  ODU is 7-3-1 with a 4-1-0 mark in CUSA play.  

Tanner Beason 

Stanford 

The redshirt junior defender continues to be a difference maker for the Cardinal. Beason  converted a penalty kick and drove a header into the net out of a corner kick in Stanford's 4-2 win over California. Stanford is 6-1-3 overall.  

Josh Bauer

New Hampshire

The sophomore back placed a shot into the right corner of the net in New Hampshire's 1-0 win over Harvard and was part of a stout Wildcat defense that shutout Albany 1-0 to improve to 8-2-1.  

Matthias Frick Duke 

 

The sophomore defender made an impact on both sides of the ball.  He converted a header out of a free kick and was a key part of a defense that shutout Virginia 2-0. Duke improves to 6-3-1.  

Hendrik Hilpert Syracuse

The senior netminder anchored an Orange defense that contained  Akron 3-1 and shutout number one ranked Wake Forest 2-0. Hilpert had an eight save week including a highlight reel stop in the win over the Deacons. Syracuse improves to 4-4-1.  

 

College Soccer News - National Team of the Week - Week Ending September 30, 2018

Sven Koenig - Senior - Forward - Creighton Koenig scored twice to help power the Bluejays past Jacksonville 2-1. He also netted the game-winning goal in Creighton's 1-0 win over Seton Hall in a Big East Contest.  The Bluejays have won six straight to improve to 7-1-1 with a 3-0-0 mark in conference play.  
Giovanni Montesdeoca - Sophomore - Forward - UNC  Montesdeoca made a nice move to create the space he needed to find the back of the net after receiving a cross from Nils Bruening and converted a header with a double assist from Mauricio Pineda and Milo Garvanian to propel the Tar Heels past Clemson 2-0. North Carolina is 7-1-0 with a 3-0-0 mark in ACC play.   
Tate Robertson - Senior - Forward - Bowling Green  The Bowling Green team captain has been an impact player since arriving on campus in 2015.  Robertson scored two picture perfect goals in the first half of play to give the Falcons the edge they needed to top Valparaiso 2-1.  Bowling Green will seek to add to their win total when they host Akron on Saturday.    
Emil Elveroth - Sophomore - Forward - UNCW  Elveroth had a productive week of play.  He scored and contributed an assist on teammate Cesar Cruz's goal to help the Seahawks thump the College of Charleston 4-1.  He also scored and contributed a helper on David Lozano's goal in UNCW's 2-0 win over JMU.  The Seahawks, who will square off with North Carolina on Tuesday, improve to 7-1-1.   
Alec Philippe - Junior - Forward - Wright State Philippe scored and produced two helpers in Wright State's 6-2 win over Duquesne.  He also added two goals and an assist to play a key role in Wright State's 4-2 victory over Detroit Mercy in Horizon League play. Philippe has nine goals to date for the Raiders who are now  8-0-1. Wright State travels to face Virginia on Tuesday night. 
Ilias Kosmidis - Junior - Forward - HIgh Point  Kosmidis converted a penalty kick and sloted a shot just inside the right post after receiving a pass from Jonathan Bolanos in HPU's 2-0 win over Appalachian State. He also drove a header into the back of the frame served in by Ryan Inman in the Panther's 1-0 win over Winthrop.  High Point improves to 8-1-0 with a 3-0-0 mark in Big South play.  
Diogo Pacheco - RS Sophomore - Midfielder - Akron  Pacheco contributed a hat trick including the golden goal in overtime to give Akron a big momentum building come from behind 4-3 win over VCU. The Zips have now won three straght to improve to 4-3-1.   
Vlad Jandric - Junior - Midfielder - Cleveland State Jandric scored three times to lead Cleveland State to a 3-1 win over UIC in Horizon League play.  The hat trick was the first for a Viking since the 2013 season.  Cleveland State improves to 2-5-1 with a 1-2-1 mark in conference play.  
Bruno Lapa - Junior - Midfielder - Wake Forest  Lapa has been a force for the Demon Deacons.  He  fournd the back of the net twice and contributed an assist in Wake Forest's 5-1 win over Davidson.  He also netted what proved to be the game-winning goal off a nice give and go with teammate Logan Gdula in Wake Forest's 4-2 win over Duke.  The Deacons are 10-0-0. 
Amir Bashti - Senior - Midfielder - Stanford Bashti scored and contributed an assist on Logan Panchot's goal in Stanford's 3-0 win over San Diego State.  He also scored and contributed a helper on Charlie Wehan's goal to help Stanford top UCLA 3-0.  The Cardinal improve to 5-1-3 with a 2-0-0 mark in Pac-12 play.  
Justin Wright - Senior - Defender - UC Davis  Wright, who was at the right place at the right time, came through in the clutch for UC Davis with a two goal performance that included the  golden goal in overtime to propel the Aggies to a 2-1 win over Sacramento State. UC Davis improves to 7-1-2 overall.  
Marcus Lindqvist - Senior - Defender - Hofstra Lindqvist was a key part of a Hofstra defense that shutout Drexel 1-0 and William and Mary 4-0. He sent a left footed shot into the back of the net off a give-and-go with teammate Luke Brown in the win over Drexel and contributed the helper on Matthew Vowinkel's goal in Hofstra's win over William and Mary. The Pride improves to 5-3-3.   
Elliot Panicco - RS Junior - Goalkeeper - Charlotte Pancicco had a nine save week during which he anchored a stout Charlotte defense that shutout Wofford 2-0 and UAB 1-0.  His saves included a huge stop of a penalty kick in the contest with UAB.  Charlotte improves to 5-2-1 and secures their first win of the year in CUSA play.  

 

College Soccer News - National Team of the Week - Week Ending September 23, 2018

Clutch performances on both sides of the ball are reflected in the CSN National Team of the Week.  

Benji Michel - Junior - Forward - Portland  Michel scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with a double assist from Greg Tracey and Esteban Calvo in Portland's 2-1 win over Oregon State.  The goal was Michel's seventh so far this season. Portland is off to its best start since the 1989 season with a 6-0-2 record. 
Achara - Junior - Forward - Georgetown  Achara sent a header into the back of the frame after receiving a well played cross from defender Dylan Nealis in Georgetown's 1-0 on the road win over Duke. He also netted the game-winning goal with a double assist from Ethan Lochner and Jacob Montes in the Hoyas 2-1 win over DePaul in a Big East play.  Georgetown improves to 5-2-1.   
Andre Shinyashiki - Senior - Forward - Denver Shinyashiki scored four goals to help Denver come from two goals down to top a determined Omaha team 4-3.  Three of his goals came in a span of just under four minutes in the early part of the second half. His fourth goal, the game-winner, came in the seventy-ninth minute of play in what was one of the most explosive contests to date in the 2018 season.   
Niklas Brodacki - Junior - Forward - Central Arkansas  Broadacki found the back of the net twice to help power Central Arkansas to a 3-0 win over Bradley in a key Missouri Valley Conference contest.  His first goal was a chip shot from six yards out with an assit from Christian Ilia.  His second score was from just inside the box with an assist from Jake Bates.  The Bears improve to 3-3-1.   
Jonathan Jimenez - Junior - Forward - Pacific  Jimenez scored the lone goal from just inside the penalty area in Pacific's 1-0 win over Stanford.  He also scored and assisted on the goals of teammates Tariq Branche and Cooper Riley to play a key role in Pacific's 4-2 win over UC Irvine.  The Tigers are undefeated in their past five contests to improve to 6-2-1. 
Mathias Ebbesen - Senior - Midfielder - Drexel  Ebbesen sent a loose ball back into the net from six yards out and converted a header out of a corner kick in Drexel's 2-0 win over Bucknell.  He also netted a penalty kick in overtime to give Drexel the edge they needed to top Elon 3-2.  The Dragons are 6-1-1. 
Matthew Chow - Junior - Midfielder - Brown Chow scored the game-winning goal in the final minute of the second overtime period to give Brown a 1-0 win over previosuly undefeated and unscored upon Rhode Island. Brown improves to 3-3-0.  The Bears face Boston University on Tuesday in their last non-conference contest before beginning Ivy League play.  
Alex Summerfield - Junior - Defender - Georgia State  Summerfield skillfully chipped a shot into the back of the frame to give Georgia State the lone goal they needed to top Mercer 1-0.  He was also part of a solid Panther defensive effort.  Georgia State improves to 6-2-0.  The Panthers have won six straight contests for the first time since the 1987 season.   
Simon Blotko - Senior - Defender - N.C. State The Wolfpack captain contributed an assist on teammate Tanner Roberts' game-winning strike and anchored a very solid backline that shutout a good Virginia Tech team 1-0 in ACC play. N.C. State secures their first win over the Hokies since 2013 and improves to 6-1-0.  
Andrew Gutman - Senior - Defender - Indiana  The Hoosier defender scored after receiving a pass from Griffin Dorsey  and contributed the assist on the goals scored by Justin Rennicks and Dorsey in Indiana's 5-0 win on the road over Evansville.  Indiana wins their seventh straight contest to improve to 7-1-0.  
Adrien Awana - Junior - Defender - Manhattan  Awana's header in the 90th minute of play out of a corner kick served in by freshman James Cotter gave Manhattan the edge they needed to upset Fordham 1-0 in the Battle of the Bronx.  Manhattan secures its first ever win over a ranked opponent and improves to 7-1-0.   
Patrik Gujic - Freshman - Goalkeeper - UMass Lowell  Gujic had six saves including several at point blank range to play a key role in UMass Lowell's 2-0 win over Vermont in a big America East Conference contest.  The River Hawks improve to 6-1-2 overall. 
Simon Lefebvre - Junior - Goalkeeper - Temple  Lefebvre had seven saves to anchor a stellar Temple defense along with backs Zach Brown, Akeem Prawl, Nick Sarver and Pierre Cayet that shutout UCF 1-0 in an American Athletic Conference contest.  Temple is now 3-4-0.
