College Soccer News - National Team of the Week - Week Ending September 17, 2017

Alan Winn - Senior - Forward - North Carolina Winn, who hails from Garland, Texas, scored twice in the Tar Heels 3-2 win over William and Mary. He also added a goal in UNC's 2-1 win over rival Duke. North Carolina improves to 6-1-0.  
Brandon Guhl - Sophomore - Forward - Butler Guhl contributed a helper on teammate Joel Harvey's goal to help the Bulldogs edge Evansville 1-0. He also netted a pair of goals to help Butler come from behind to top Creighton 3-2 in a key Big East contest. Butler improves to 5-2-0. 
Samson Sergi - RS Sophomore - Forward - Xavier Sergi's header after receiving a cross from Simen Hestnes was the difference maker as Xavier topped Georgetown 1-0 in overtime. The goal was Sergi's fourth of the season to date. Xavier is unbeaten in its last six contests to improve to 5-1-1. 
Cody Gibson - Redshirt Sophomore - Forward - Seattle Gibson scored two goals to help power Seattle past Santa Clara 5-2. He also netted the game-winner in Seattle's 1-0 win over Drexel. Gibson has scored five goals in the past three contests to help the Redhawks secure a 6-1-0 record. 
Matteo Bennati - Freshman - Forward - Belmont  Bennati drove a header into the back of the frame after receiving a cross from Julian Lucumi Villegas to give Belmont the edge they needed to defeat Georgia State 1-0. He also alertly slotted a rebound into the back of the net to help the Panthers top Milwaukee 2-1. Belmont improves to 3-1-2. 
Paul Geyer - Senior - Midfielder - Sacramento State Geyer was a catalyst on both sides of the ball helping Sacramento State secure a 2-1 win over Utah Valley and a 4-3 win over Northern Illinois  to improve to 4-3-0.  
Ema Twumasi - Sophomore - Midfielder - Wake Forest Twumasi scored twice in Wake Forest's 3-0 win over Appalachian State. He also contributed a goal with an assist from teammate Jon Bakero to help the Demon Deacons top Pittsburg 2-0.  Wake Forest is now 6-1-0.
Sean Clarke - Freshman - Midfielder - Cincinnati  Clarke scored the game-winning goal when he lofted the rebound of his own shot into the net in the eighty-second minute of play in the Bearcat's 1-0 win over Kentucky. He also contributed a goal and an assit in Cincinnati's 3-1 win over Bowling Green. The Bearcats up their record to 4-2-1.  
Javier Carbonell - Junior - Midfielder - Georgia Southern  Corbonell was a catalyst on the offensive side of the ball in the Eagle's 2-1 win over Coastal Carolina in a key Sun Belt Conference contest. He skillfully contributed the assists on the goals scored by teammates Gonzalo Talavera and Aldair Cortes. Georgia Southern is now 3-3-1. 
Tanner Dieterich - Sophomore - Defender - Clemson  Dieterich was solid on both sides of the ball in Clemson's 1-0 win over Boston College. He made a nice move to create space and converted what proved to be the game-winner in the victory over Boston College. He was also part of a gutsy Tiger defense. Clemson improves to 5-1-0 and will host UCLA on Tuesday. 
Niall Logue - Senior - Defender - Ohio State Logue was part of a solid Buckeye defensive effort that resulted in shutouts against Penn State 3-0 and Rutgers 1-0 to give Ohio State a 6-1-0 overall record with a 3-0-0 mark in Big Ten play. He also scored out of a free kick in the contest with Penn State. 
Kyle Saunderson - Junior - Defender - UMBC Saunderson converted a header out of a corner kick and a header out of a free kick to help power the Retrievers to a 3-2 victory over West Virginia. Freshman midfiedler Matt Bailey contributed two helpers in the win. UMBC also tied George Washington 1-1 to conclude the week with a 4-1-1 record.    
Nils Leifhelm - Senior - Goalkeeper - Rhode Island  Leifhelm made the key stops that he needed to make including two in the final minutes of regulation in the Ram's scoreless tie with New Hampshire. Leifhelm has recorded three consecutive shutouts to up his career total to nineteen. Rhode Island is now 3-2-1 while New Hampshire is 5-0-2.    

 

College Soccer News - National Team Of The Week - Week Ending September 10, 2017

Marcel Zajac - Sophomore - Forward - Akron Zajac scored twice to help Akron top UC Santa Barabara 3-1. The Zips improve to 2-2-0. 
DeJuan Jones - Junior - Forward - Michigan State Jones found the back of the net twice to power MIchigan State past Rutgers 2-1. The Spartans also defeated Cleveland State 1-0 and are now 5-0-0. 
 Mario Mastrangelo - Junior - Forward - St. Francis University Mastrangelo netted a hat trick to lead the Red Flash past Colgate 3-0. SJU improves to 3-3-0 year to date. 
Mamadou Guirassy - Senior - Forward - NJIT  Guirassy continues to come up with big plays for the Highlanders. He scored the lone goal in NJIT's 1-0 win over LIU Brooklyn and contributed two goals and an assist in their victory over St. Francis Brooklyn. The Highlanders improve to 5-0-1.  
Joh Gallagher - Senior - Forward - Notre Dame Gallagher found the back of the net three times to lead the Irish past Boston College 3-1. Notre Dame improves to 4-0-0.
Mikkel Pederson - Junior - Forward - Kentucky   Pederson played a key role on the offensive side of the ball for the Wildcats. He contributed a goal in Kentucky's 2-2 tie with Louisville and netted the game-winniwing goal in the Wildcat's 1-0 victory over UAB. 
Bradon Bye - Senior - Midfielder - Western Michigan Bye had a productive week of play contributing a goal in Western Michigan's 2-0 win over Cincinnati, their 3-2 win over Butler, and in their 2-1 victory over Drake. The Broncos improve to 5-0-1.  
Rollie Rocha - Senior - Midfielder - Tulsa  Rocha converted two penalty kicks to give Tulsa the edge they needed to upset Stanford 2-0. 
Matin Nygaard - Junior - Defender - Northeastern   Nygaard converted a penalty kick in the 108th minute of play to give Norheastern a solid 2-1 win over UMass Lowell before 2,000 fans at Parson's Field. 
Markus Fjortoft - Senior - Defender - Duke Fjortoft was part of a very solid Blue Devil defense that opened ACC play with a solid 3-1 win over Virginia Tech. Duke is now 4-0-1. 
Drake Callander - Sophomore - Goalkeeper - California Callander had a nine save evening including a big stop on a penalty kick to give the Golden Bears the edge they needed to upset Portland 2-1 in overtime.

 

College Soccer News - National Team of the Week - Week Ending September 3, 2017

Rex Epps - Sophomore - Forward - Army  Epps who hails from Irmo, South Carolina scored twice to help power Army past Fairfield 3-0. He netted his first goal after receiving a cross from Keenan O'Shea. His second goal was set up by a pass from teammate Shaban Abousaud. Epps has socred four goals in Army's three contests to date. The Black Knights are 3-0-0 and off to their best start since the 2013 season.  
Foster Langsdorf - Senior - Forward - Stanford  Langsdorf earns a repeat spot on the CSN National Team of the Week. The Cardinal forward found the back of the net twice to help Stanford top Creighton 3-0 before a sellout crowed at Cagan Stadium. Langsdorf drove a shot into the back of the frame after teammate Corey Baird made a good move and pass to set up the goal. Langsdorf also controlled and sent a deflection back into the net with a double assist from Baird and Drew Skundrich. On Sunday, Langsdorf scored the lone goal in Standford's 1-0 win over Northeastern. 
Jad Arslan - Senior - Midfielder - West Virginia  Arslan scored twice to play a key role in West Virginia's 4-1 win over Wright State. Arslan has scored a total of four goals so far this year including the game-winner in all of West Virginia's three victories. The Mountaineers will seek to keep their unbeaten streak alive when they welcome Monmouth to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Labor Day. 
Ian McGrath - Senior - Midfielder - Evansville McGrath converted a header after receiving a pass from Chris Shuck and alertly controlled and drove a rebound of a shot into the back of the frame in overtime to lead the Purple Aces past Milwaukee 3-2. McGrath has netted four goals and contributed two assists in Evansville's three contests this year. The Purple Aces are 3-0-0. 
Luis Argudo - Senior - Midfielder - Wake Forest  Argudo scored twice and added a helper in Wake Forest's 4-1 win on the road over Saint Louis. He scored out of a throw-in with a double assist from defemder Logan Gdula and forward Jon Bakero. Argudo also slotted a shot into the far past from inside the box with a double assit from midfielders Brad Dunwell and Brandon Servania. He also contributed an assist on Jon Bakero's score. 
Danny Kierath - Junior - Midfielder - Furman Kierath drove a shot into the left-hand corner of the net with a little over a minute left to play in the second overtime period to give Furman a 1-0 on the road win over Denver. The goal was set up by a long pass from Rocky Guerra. Furman also topped a good Air Force team 1-0 to improve their record to 3-0-0. 
Wouter Verstraaten - Junior - Defender - Pacific  Verstraaten played a key role on both sides of the ball helping Pacific defeat Virginia Tech 1-0 on Friday and to come from behind to top a determined James Madison team 2-1 on Sunday. Verstraaten scored the lone goal in the win over Virginia Tech. He also alertly capitalized on a defensive miscue to net the game-winning goal in the contest with James Madison. The Tigers up their record to 4-0-0.  
Alexis Souahy - Senior - Defender - Bowling Green The BGSU team captain and center back is a rock solid part of the Bowling Green defense that has not allowed a goal in four games this year. This week the Falcons topped Cleveland State 2-0, Drexel 3-0 and Penn 2-0 to improve to 4-0-0. Souahy also contributed a goal in the wins over Drexel and Penn. 
Hjalmar Ekdal - Freshman - Defender - UNCW Ekdal headed in a corner kick served in by junior midfielder David Lozano to give the Seahawks the edge they needed to upset highly regarded North Carolina 1-0 in front of a crowd of 1,778 fans at the UNCW Soccer Stadium in Wilmington. Ekdal was also solid on the defensive side of the ball. The Seahawks remain unbeaten with a 3-0-0 record.  
Tim Kubel - Senior - Defender - Louisville  Kubel continues to come up with big plays for the Cardinals. He scored the lone goal in Louisville's 1-0 win over Butler when he scored from eighteen yards out after receiving a cross from Tate Smith. Kubel also converted a penalty kick to give Louisville the edge they needed to defeat Georgia State on the road. He also has been a part of a solid Louisville defense that has allowed only one goal in three games to date. 
Nacho Miras - RS Sophomore - Goalkeeper - Valpo Miras came up with the big saves in goal that he needed to make to give Valparaiso University the opportunity to defeat Loyola Chicago 2-1 in their inagural Missouri Valley Contest and DePaul 2-1 to secure the Chicago Classic title. Miras had four saves in the win over Loyola Chicago and an eight save evening in the victory over DePaul.  Valpo improves to 2-1-1.  

 

College Soccer News - National Team of the Week - Week Ending August 27, 2017

Foster Langsdorf - Senior - Forward - Stanford  Langsdorf scored twice to help the Cardinal secure a decisive season opening 4-0 win over San Jose State. His first goal was set up by a nice cross from redshirt junior midfielder Sam Werner. Langsdorf's second score came out of a corner kick with Werner again contributing the assist. 
Jeff Farina - Senior - Forward - Notre Dame Farina had a very solid weekend of play. He netted the insurance goal in Notre Dame's 2-0 win over San Diego. Farina also converted a header and sent a shot into the back of the net from fifteen yards out to play a key role in Notre Dame's 2-1 win over Cal Poly. 
Spiro Pliakos - Senior - Forward - Detroit Mercy Pliakos helped the Titans open the 2017 season with a 2-1 win over Stetson and a 1-0 win over LIU-Brooklyn to begin with a 2-0-0 record for the first time since 2011. Pliakos scored twice in the win over Stetson including the game-winning goal in overtime. The win over Stetson was head coach Nicholas Deren's fiftieth victory at Detriot Mercy. 
Jelani Pieters - Redshirt Sophomore - Forward - UNC  Pieters was a very productive part of a very explosive Tar Heel attack. He contributed a goal with an assist from Zach Wright in North Carolina's 4 to 2 win over Providence. Pieters also netted two goals and provided one helper in UNC's 5 to 1 win over Rutgers.  
Mauro Cichero - Senior - Forward - SMU Cichero netted a hat trick to power SMU past UC Davis Friday night. He scored out of a free kick from twenty-five yards out, converted a penalty kick and drove a header into the back of the frame to tally the game-winner for the Mustangs in the eighty-ninth minute of the contest. SMU head coach Kevin Hudson pretty much summed it up when he stated, "It was a fantastic performance." 
Adrien Cabon - Junior - Midfielder - Louisville Cabon scored twice in little over a three minute span to help Louisville come from behind to top UC Irvine 2-1. HIs first goal was a blast into the upper right corner of the goal from twenty-one yards out. Cabone's second goal was created by a nice run up the left center of the field that placed him in the position to drive a shot into the upper right corner of the frame from fourteen yards out. 
Brian Iloski - Redshirt Senior - Midfielder - UCLA Iloski was a key ingredient in a potent Bruin attack that topped San Francisco 5-3 on Saturday. Iloski netted two of UCLA's five goals. He calmly converted a penalty kick and drove a cross served in by sophomore defender Alex Knox into the back of the net. Things don't get any easier for UCLA as they travel to face Maryland next Friday and tangle with Georgetown on Monday.  
Brandon Servania - Freshman - Midfielder - Wake Forest  Servania had an impressive collegiate debut scoring two goals and contributing two assists to help power the Demon Deacons to a 5-1 victory over Rutgers. He also contributed two assists in Wake Forest's 4-1 win over a good Providence team.  
Jake Rozhansky - Senior - Midfielder - Maryland Rozhansky was a catalyst in Maryland's 4 to 2 season opening on the road win over Santa Clara. He provided the helper on teamate Eric Matzelevich's goal and netted two goals with Eryk Williamson providing the assist on the first and Sebastian Elney contributing the assist on the second. Maryland will seek to up its win total when they return home to host Hofstra on Monday night at Ludwig Field. 
Andrew Gutman - Junior - Defender - Indiana  Gutman scored Indiana's first goal in their 2-0 season opening win over Cal Poly. He also was a key part of a rock solid Hoosier defense that also shutout San Diego 1-0 in Indiana's second contest in the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament in South Bend. Indiana begins the 2017 campaign 2-0-0. 
Giovanny Vazquez - Senior - Defender - Utah Valley Vazquez drove a header into the back of the net from just outside of the box out of a corner kick served in by teammate Connor Salmon to give the Wolverines the edge they needed to top visiting Akron 1-0. Vazquez was also part of a very solid Utah Valley defensive effort.  Wolverine head coach Greg Maas stated, "Gio brings an incredible amount of leadership and experience."
Kellar Sirstins - Junior - Goalkeeper - Iona  The netminder from Taylorsville, Utah was a key part of an Iona defense that shutout Connecticut 1-0 on the road to secure the Gaels first ever victory over the Huskies. Sirstins came up with the saves he needed to make including a crucial stop of a penalty kick.
