College Soccer News - National Team of the Week - Week Ending November 3, 2019

The College Soccer News National Team of the Week seeks to recognize individual performers on both sides of the ball who played a key role in the success that their teams enjoyed during the week. 

Calvin Harris

Wake Forest 

Harris made a nice move off the dribble to secure the angle he needed to thread a shot inside the far post and decisively drove a one-timer into the near post after receiving a cross from teammate Machop Chol to play a key role in Wake Forest's 3-1 win on the road over Louisville. The Demon Deacons are 13-3-1 with a 6-2-0 mark in ACC play.  

 

Matthew Vowinkel

Hofstra

Vowinkel scored twice enabling Hofstra to come from behind to tie Binghamton 2-2. He followed that up with a three goal evening to propel the Pride to a 3-0 victory over Northeastern in a Colonial Athletic Association contest. Hofstra improves to 8-6-2 overall with a 5-2-1 mark in conference action. 

Phillip Goodrum

UNCW

Goodrum scored twice and contributed the assist on Wilhelm Nilsson's goal to lead a surging UNCW team to a 3-0 win over VCU on the road. He also converted a penalty kick in overtime to give the Seahawks the edge they needed to top Elon in a CAA contest. Goodrum has scored ten goals so far this year.    

Christian Sload

Penn State

Sload came through in the clutch twice for Penn State. He decisively drove a shot into the right side of the frame in overtime to enable Penn State to come from two goals down to top Maryland 3-2. Sload also converted a header out of a corner kick in overtime in Penn State's 2-1 win over Rutgers.  

Connor Hubbard

Furman 

Hubbard helped the Paladins pick up a 4-1 win over Wofford and a 2-1 win over Belmont to secure the program's twentieth regular season title. He scored twice in the win over Wofford and contributed the game-winner in the win over Belmont. Furman improves to 11-6-1 with a 5-1-0 mark in conference play.

Air Force

Trager was a force on the offensive side of the ball with back-to-back hat tricks to power Air Force to a 4-3 win in overtime against Grand Canyon and a 3-2 win over UNLV in Western Athletic Conference play. The Falcons improve to 7-9-0 overall with a 6-4-0 mark in conference play.  

Jonas Westmeyer

Westmeyer provided the game-winning goal by skillfully sending a shot into the upper left corner of the net out of a free kick in Marshall's 2-1 win on the road over Oakland.  He also scored the lone goal of the match from inside the six yard box after receiving a cross from Milo Yosef in Marshall's 1-0 win over Kentucky in a key CUSA match.

Clarke played a key role in Colgate's come from behind 2-1 win over Navy in Patriot League play. Clark was solid on the defensive side of the ball and converted a header in the closing minutes of regulation to send the contest into overtime where Drew Fischer netted the game-winner for the Raiders. .

Haupt alertly scored the game-winning goal out of a throw-in and was part of a very solid UC Davis defense anchored in goal by Wallis Lapsley that shutout Sacramento State 1-0. The Aggies improve to 11-4-2 with a 5-1-1 mark in Big West play. 

 

Alberto Suarez

Central Arkansas

Suarez is a difference maker. He was dominant in the air and also added an additional element to the Central Arkansas attack from his center back position in the Bears 2-0 win in Atlanta over Georgia State in Sun Belt Conference play. Central Arkansas improves to 9-6-1 with a 3-1-0 mark in conference play.

Roach was rock solid in goal recording a career-high ten saves to anchor a Gaucho defense that shutout Big West Conference opponent Cal Poly 2-0. UCSB improves to 11-3-4 overall with a 4-1-2 mark in conference play. 

Nick Brady

Brady had nine saves between the pipes to lead  an impressive South Carolina defense that shutout a very good FIU team 1-0 in Conference USA play. The Gamecocks improve to 7-8-2 overall and stay in the hunt for a berth in the upcoming CUSA Tournament. 

College Soccer News - National Team of the Week - Week Ending October 27, 2019

This was the week of the playmaker throughout the country as individuals took over contests with multiple goals and/or assists to help their team secure wins. There were also outstanding performers on the defensive side of the ball who were rock solid difference makers.   

Garrett McLaughlin

McLaughlin scored three times within the first twenty-four minutes of the contest and added two more goals in the second half to power SMU past Cincinnati 7-1 in an AAC match. The Mustangs also topped Stetson 5-0 earlier in the week to improve to 12-1-1. 

Alexander Dexter

Dexter contributed the helper on the goals scored by teammates Edward Kizza and Velijko Petkovic and scored the game-winner in Pitt's 4 to 3 come from behind win over Duke in an ACC contest. Pitt is now 8-5-2 overall with a 4-2-1 record against in ACC play. 

Gerald Cubero

Cubero scored twice to lead the Highlanders to a 2-1 on the road win over FGCU in an ASUN Conference game. The win was NJIT's first-ever over FGCU. The Highlanders improve to  7-4-4 overall and move into the number one spot in the ASUN standings with a 4-1-1 record in conference play.

Seattle 

McGlynn assisted on the goals scored by Noe Meza and Hal Uderitz in Seattle's 2-1 win over Air Force. He also netted the game-winner in overtime with an assist from Meza in Seattle's 2-1 come from behind win over Utah Valley. The Red Hawks improve to 10-3-3 and extend their unbeaten streak to nine games.

Faletto scored four times including the game-winning goal in overtime to power Houston Baptist past Grand Canyon 4-3. HBU also topped UNLV 3-1 to improve to 5-9-0 with a 3-5-0 mark in WAC competition. 

Jan Maertins

Maertins was a difference maker who came through in the cluth for NIU. He scored twice including the game-winning goal to led the Huskies past Western Michigan 3-2 in an MAC matchup. NIU improves to 7-7-1 with a 2-1-0 mark in MAC play. 

David Egbo

Egbo was a catalyst for Akron in their 3-0 win over SIUE in a key MAC matchup. He assisted on the goals scored by teammates Mani Austmann and Will Jackson and scored from ten yards out with freshman midfielder Henrique Cruz providing the assist. Akron is 4-8-2 with a 2-0-1 mark in conference play.

Indiana 

Morris is a playmaker. . He assisted on the goals scored by teammates Joris Ahlinvi and Joe Schmidt and scored with an assist from Thomas Warr to help propel Indiana to a 3-0 win over Rutgers. The Hoosiers also defeated Evansville 5-1. Indiana is 10-2-3 overall and 5-1-0 in Big Ten play. 

Chris Sullivan

Sullivan was involved in the scoring of five of BGSU's seven goals during the week. He produced a goal and two assists in the Falcons 4-0 win over Purdue Fort Wayne and contributed two assists in their 3-0 win over West Virginia. Sullivan has six goals and nine assists to date. BGSU is 9-5-1 overall.

Kherat was at the center of a solid Bradley defense that limited MVC opponents Loyola Chicago and Valparaiso to only four shots on goal. The Braves tied Loyola Chicago 0-0 and topped Valpo 1-0. Kherat scored the game-winning goal in the victory over Valpo. Bradley is 5-5-4 overall with a 4-3-2 record against MVC opponents.

The Terp centerback scored the game-winning goal in overtime in Maryland's 1-0 win over a very good Yale team. He also was part of a tenacious Maryland defense that shutout Big Ten foe Ohio State 2-0 on the road. Maryland improves to 9-4-2 with a 3-0-2 mark in conference play.

Cayet contributed on the offensive side of the ball and was part of a solid Temple defense that helped secure a 2-1 win over Louisvile and a 2-1 win over AAC foe UConn. Cayet drove a header into the back of the net out of a corner kick in both games. Temple improves to 7-6-1 with a 3-1-1 mark in AAC play.

Virginia 

Shutler simply continues to take care of business between the pipes for Virginia. He anchored a Cavalier defense that shutout Saint Louis 3-0 and Virginia Tech 2-0  Shutler had a seven save week during which recorded his twelfth shutout of the season. The Cavaliers improve to 13-1-1 with a 5-1-1 mark in ACC play.

The College Soccer News National Team of the Week features top performers on both sides of the ball coast to coast who played a key role in the success their teams had during the week.

Marshall 

 

Yosef played a key role in two solid Marshall wins on the road. He scored twice and had an assist in the Thundering Herds 4-1 win over Loyola Marymount. Yosef also contributed two goals in Marshall's 5-1 win over San Diego State. The Herd improves to 10-1-2 to reach double digits in wins for the first time since the 2012 season.

Morris converted three headers with two coming out of conrner kicks and the third coming out of the run of play from within the box to help power Seattle to a 3-2 win over CSU Bakersfield. Declan McGlynn recorded three assists to become the first Seattle player to do so in D1 Program history. Seattle improves to 8-3-3 with a 5-0-1 mark in WAC play.

Oral Roberts

Brigida's eighth goal and fourth game-winner of the season gave Oral Roberts the edge they needed to defeat Denver 1-0 in overtime in a key Summit League matchup. Brigida scored from within the box with a double assist from teammates Juan Arias and Tanguy Gjerineau. Oral Roberts secures its first ever win over Denver and improves to 10-2-0 overall.

Clemson

Robinson displayed a variey of skills in route to netting his second hat-trick of the season in Clemson's 7-4 goal-a-rama victory over Syracuse in ACC action.  Clemson head coach Mike Noonan summed things up well when he stated, "He (Robinson) displayed clinical finishing, he worked intelligently and showed class and quality.  The Tigers improve to 11-1-1 with a 4-1-1 mark in conference play.  

Miguel Yuste

Yale

The Yale captain continues to be a difference maker. He sent a left footed shot into the back of the net from twenty yards out to give Yale the edge they needed to top UMass 1-0 in overtime. Yuste also added a goal in Yale's 3-1 win over Cornell when he drove a deflection into the net out of a free kick. Yale is unbeaten in their first eleven games for the first time since 1935 and 3-0-0 in Ivy Leage play for the first time since 1991. 

Bruno Lapa

Lapa converted a penalty kick and assisted on teammate Kyle Holcomb's goal in Wake Forest's 5-0 win over William and Mary. He also sent a shot into the far post to propel Wake Forest past North Carolina 1-0. Lapa has scored in four straight contests during which time he has contributed five goals and two assists. The Demon Deacons are 12-2-0 with a 5-1-0 mark in ACC play. 

Charlie Sharp

Sharp played a key role in Western Michigan's 2-1 win over Michigan and 1-1 tie with Akron. He scored the game-winner in the win over Michigan and contributed a helper on Eric Conerty's goal in the contest with Akron. Western Michigan is 9-4-1 overall with a 1-0-1 mark in MAC play. 

Aaron Molloy

The Nittany Lion captain was a factor in two solid Penn State wins. He converted a penalty kick and assisted on Liam Butts' goal in Penn State's 3-1 win over Pittsburgh. He also scored out of a corner kick in Penn State's 2-1 win on the road over Wisconsin. Malloy has six goals and two assists. Penn State is 8-2-2 with a 4-1-1 mark in Big Ten play.

Colacci had four assists in New Hampshire's 4-0 win over UMass Lowell on the road. The linkman from Bradenton, Florida has scored four goals to date and has a total of seven assists. New Hampshire ups their record to 10-0-2 overall with a perfect 4-0-0 mark in America East Conference action.

De Luca drove a header into the back of the net out of a corner kick in overtime to enable Memphis to upset SMU 4-3 in Dallas. He also assisted on teammate Peter Changs goal. Memphis improves to 9-3-0 with a 3-1-0 mark in American Athletic Conference play.

Nealis contributed on both sides of the ball as Georgetown shutout Maryland 1-0 and Xavier 1-0. Nealis is part of a solid Georgetown defense that recorded its fifth straight shutout and eighth of the season. The Hoyas improve to 11-1-0 with a 4-0-1 mark in Big East play. Georgetown and St. John's square off on Wednesday in a huge Big East mathup.

Person netted what proved to be the game-winning goal and was part of a rock solid Gael defense that shutout a very good San Diego team 3-0 in a key West Coast Conference contest. Saint Mary's improves to 11-1-0 with a 2-0-0 mark in conference play.

Gjergji had a solid five save evening in goal to post his fourth shutout of the season in Butler's 4-0 win over Seton Hall in Big East Conference competition. Butler improves to 8-4-1 overall with a 2-2-1 record in conference play.

Berry is among the reasons why San Diego is off to a 9-1-1 start. Berry scored twice despite being a tightly marked man and contributed a helper on teammate Alex Churness' goal in San Diego's 4-0 win over San Francisco in a WCC match. Berry has scored ten goals so far this year.

Achara is a difference maker. He returned from injury to score Georgetown's first goal in their 2-0 win over Lehigh and scored twice to help power the Hoyas past Seton Hall 2-0 in a Big East Conference contest. Georgetown improves to 9-1-1 with a 3-0-1 mark in league play.

DaSilva had a productive week of play scoring twice to help power the Great Danes past Hofstra 4-1 and twice to lead Albany to a 2-0 win over UMass Lowell in an America East Conference game. DaSilva is an impact player who has scored a total of ten times this year. Albany is 6-4-1 overall with a 2-1-0 mark in America East play.

Jacquel continues to come up big for Campbell. He converted a header after receiving a cross from Dylan Sadler in Campbell's 3-1 come from behind win over Winthrop and contributed three goals and two helpers in Campbell's 6-2 thumping of Presbyterian. Jacquel has scored a total of thirteen times for the Camels who are 10-2-1 overall and 4-0-0 mark in Big South Conference play.

The Nittany Lion freshman from Lawrenceville, Georgia gave Penn State the edge they needed to top Northwestern 3-2 in overtime. He found the upper right corner of the goal in regulation after making a strong move in the box to create the space he needed to score. He also alertly sent a rebound into the back of the frame in overtime.  

Rodney Michael

Michael is a playmaker. He assisted on teammate Ballard McBride Finn's goal and scored after receiving a through ball from Thibault Candia in UCSB's 2-0 win over Sacramento State.  He also scored and contributed an assist in the Gauchos 5-0 thumping of Cal State Fullerton. UCSB is unbeaten in its last ten contests and is now 9-2-2 overall.  

Ryan Raposo

Raposo displayed a variety of skills to create the space he needed to score three times including the game-winner with less than three minutes remaining in regulation to help Syracuse upset North Carolina 4-3  in Chapel Hill. The Orange scored three times in the last twenty minutes of regulation to secure the win and improve to 4-3-4 overall.   

Mohamed Conde

Conde assisted on the two goals scored by teammate Xavi Olmos Ferris in FIU's 3-2 win in overtime against in-state foe FGCU. He also contributed the game-winner from inside the box in the closing minutes of regulation to give FIU the edge they needed to top Kentucky 2-1 in Lexington. FIU improves to 9-0-3 with a perfect 4-0-0 mark in CUSA play. 

Nick Benjamin

Benjamin scored out of a corner kick in the 89th minute of play to enable Hartford to tie St. Joseph's 2-2. He also drove a shot into the lower left corner of the goal in the 85th minute of play to give the Hawks a 1-0 win over Stony Brook.  The Hawks are unbeaten in their last ten contests to improve to 7-2-3. .   

Illal Osmanu

Osmanu was an integral part of a Marshall backline that held a very good Charlotte team to two shots on goal on the road in a scoreless CUSA contest. The Herd is undefeated in their last five contests and has recorded three consecutive shutouts.

Saez scored twice in UNCW's 2-0 win over Old Dominion and was part of a stout Seahawk defense that shutout the College of Charleston 1-0 in a CAA game. The Seahawks have won three in a row to improve to 7-4-1 with a 4-0-1 mark in CAA play.

Schulte was sharp between the pipes for the Billikens making three saves in their  2-0 win over George Mason at Hermann Stadium and four saves in Saint Louis' 2-0 on the road win over LaSalle. Saint Louis has now won five straight contests to up their overall record to 8-3-0 with a 5-0-0 mark in Atlantic 10 play.
