College Soccer News - National Team Of The Week - Week Ending October 16, 2016

Zach Wright - Junior -Forward - North Carolina Wright scored North Carolina's first goal in their 7-0 thumping of UNC Ashville.  He also came up big for the Tar Heels when he made a nice move at speed off the dribble to create the space he needed to drive a shot into the back of the goal from near the top of the box to net the game-winner in UNC's 2-1 win over rival Duke in ACC action. The Tar Heels are 10-2-1 overall with a 4-1-1 mark in conference action.  
Julio Moncada - RS Junior Forward - UNCW Moncada contributed the asist on junior forward Stian Sandbekkhaug's goal in UNCW's 1-1 tie with the College of Charleston. He also scored twice to lead the Seahawks to a 3-1 win over Hofstra. UNCW improves to 7-2-2 overall with a 2-0-2 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play. 
Matthew Puig - Freshman - Forward - Tulsa Puig netted what proved to be the game winning goal from seventeen yards out after receiving a pass from Quinton Duncan to help Tulsa upset Creighton 2-1. He also contributed a goal when he scored from seven yards out with a double assist from teammates Rollie Rocha and Kay Quit to help the Golden Hurricane defeate a determined UCF team 3-2. Tulsa improves to 7-4-2 overall with a 2-2-0 mark in American Athletic Conference action.  
Ahinga Selemani - Junior - Forward - UCSB Selemani has been finding the back of the net on a consistent basis for the Gauchos. This week he scored their lone goal in a 1-1 draw with Sacramento State. Selemani also netted UCSB's first goal with Kevin Feucht providing the second in their 2-1 come from behind win on the road over Cal Poly before a crowd of 11,075 fans. UCSB improves to 8-5-2 overall with a 4-0-2 mark in Big West Conference play. 
Adam Wilson - Sophomore - Midfielder - Cinciinnati  Wilson is a playmaker. He had two assists in the Bearcats 3-0 nonconference win over IUPUI and contributed two more helpers in their 4-0 win over Temple in an American Athletic Conference contest. Wilson now has ten assists so far this year. The Bearcats rebound from a 5-0 thumping from Connecticut to win two straight to up their record to 8-4-1 with a 3-1-0 mark in conference play.  
Ian Harkes - Senior - Midfielder - Wake Forest Harkes is a playmaker. His penalty kick proved to be the difference in the Demon Deacons 1-0 win over Marshall. Wake Forest was awarded the penalty kick when Luis Argudo was fouled in the box. He also converted a penalty kick to score Wake Forest's second goal in their 2-1 win over Louisville. The Deacons improve to 10-2-2 overall with a 4-1-1 mark in ACC play.   
Garrett Heine - Senior - Midfielder - George Washington Heine had a productive week of play.  He scored twice and contributed an assist in George Washington's 3-0 win over George Mason. He also scored twice to lead the Colonials past Saint Joseph's 3-0. The Colonials improve to 7-5-2 overall with a 2-1-2 mark in Atlantic 10 play.  
Tomas Hilliard-Arce - Junior - Defender - Stanford Hilliard-Acre was a key part of a Stanford defense that was rock solid. This week the Cardinal was very effective on both sides of the ball recording a 3-0 shutout win over UCLA and a 3-1 win over San Diego State in two key Pac-12 Conference contests. Hilliard-Acre drove a header into the back of the net out of a set piece served in by Corey Baird in the win over San Diego State. The Cardinal improve to 8-2-3 overall with a 5-0-0 mark in conference play. .   
Robby Sagel - Senior - Defender - Penn State Sagel was part of a solid Nittany Lion defense that shutout Pitt 1-0 and Michigan State 1-0. He also contributed the game winning goal in double overtime in the contest with Michigan State when he decisively drove a header into the back of the net out of a free kick served in by Riley Grant. Penn State gains momemtum and improves to 6-6-1 with a 3-3-0 mark in Big Ten play. 
Alex Crognale - Senior - Defender - Maryland Crognale played a key role in Maryland's 3-2 come from behind win over a very determined Wisconsin team. He scored out of a free kick served in by Amar Sejdic and out of a corner kick with a double assist from Sejdic and Chris Odoi-Atsem. The Terps also topped West Virginia on the road 1-0 with Sedjdic netting the lone goal of the match. Maryland improves to 11-0-2 overall. 
Jeff Caldwell - Junior - Goalkeeper - Virginia Caldwell has been taking care of business between the pipes for the Cavaliers. He had a seven save evening to anchor a stout Virginia defense that shutout an explosie Notre Dame team 1-0 in a big Atlantic Coast Conference contest. Sophomore forward Edward Opoku scored the lone goal for Virginia in the win over the Irish. Caldwell was also rock solid in goal in Virginia's 1-1 tie with Radford. The Cavaliers are unbeaten in their last six games to improve to 7-2-4 overall with a 2-2-2 mark in ACC play.

Logan Paynter - RS Sophomore - Forward - Lipscomb Paynter scored at close range out of a corner kick and netted the game-winning goal when he skillfully placed a shot just inside the left post with just a few ticks remaining in regulation to enable the Bison to top USC Upstate in an Atlantic Sun Conference match. Credit teammate Ivan Alvardo with setting both goals up with very nice assists. Lipscomb improves to 6-5-1 with a 2-2-0 mark in conference play.  
Riggs Lennon - Senior - Forward - Creighton Lennon continues to be a difference maker for Creighton. This week he headed in the game-winning goal out of a corner kick to give the Bluejays the edge they needed to top Butler 1-0 in a key Big East Conference contest. Lennon has scored a total of nine goals including three game-winners to date for Creighton. The Bluejays up their record to 7-1-3 overall with a 3-0-1 mark in league play. 
Ivan Abramovic - RS Freshman - Forward UMass Lowell Abramovic scored twice to help power the River Hawks to a convincing 4-0 victory on the road over UMBC. He slotted a shot into the upper right corner of the frame after receiving a through ball from Wuilito Fernandez and also drove a shot into the back of the net from fifteen yards out with Fernandez again providing the helper. The win was UMass Lowell's first ever over UMBC. The River Hawks continue to soar with a 8-0-2 record and a 1-0-1 mark against Amercia East Conference teams.  
Zach Pagani - Senior - Forward - Colgate Pagani scored both of Colgate's goals in their 2-1 win over Boston University. He also scored the Raiders first goal when he placed the rebound of teammate Jared Stroud's header into the back of the twine in Colgate's 4-3 overtime win against Bucknell. The Raiders are now 8-3-0 with a 3-1-0 record in Patriot League play.  
Brian Saramago - Freshman - Forward - Loyola Maryland  Saramago was a catalyst for the Greyhounds on the offensive side of the ball.  He and teammate Barry Sharifi combined to proved the assist on freshman Shane Kasti's game-winning strike in the Greyhounds 1-0 win over American. He also produced a hat trick in Loyola's 3-3 tie with Boston University. The vastly improved Greyhounds improve to 5-5-1 overall with a 3-0-1 record in Patiot Leage play. 
Brandt Bronico - Senior - Midfielder - Charlotte The 49er linkman who hails from High Point, North Carolina converted two penalty kicks to lead Charlotte over New Mexico 2-1 in a key Conference USA match. Credit redshirt sophomore forward Daniel Bruce with the footwork and play within the box that drew both of the penalty kicks. The 49ers pick up a nice CUSA win to improve to 7-2-0 overall with a 3-1-0 mark in league play.  
Matt Crawford - Junior - Midfielder - Saint Joseph's Crawford scored twice and assisted on teammate Derek MacKinnon's game-winning goal in the Hawks 3-1 come from behind win over Rhode Island.  He also contriubed the helper on MacKinnon's match-winner in Saint Joseph's 2-1 win over George Mason. Crawford has scored seven goals and contributed three assists so far this year.  The Hawks are now 6-5-1 overall with a 3-0-0 mark in Atlantic 10 Conference play. 
Kwame Awuah - Senior - Midfielder - Connecticut The UConn stalwart scored twice to help power the Huskies in a 5-0 thumping of Cincinnati in an American Athletic Conference contest. Connecticut has now won six straight to improve to 9-3-0 overall with a 3-0-0 mark in conference play.   
Alexis Souahy - Junior - Defender - Bowling Green Souahy scored twice in the second half of play to help the Falcons secure a 2-1 come from behind victory over Northern Kentucky. Bowling Green head coach Eric Nichols stated, "Alexis is dangerous on set pieces. He's able to get on all of them. Even when he's not scoring, he's creating something." Souahy was also part of a solid Bowling Green defensive effort that shutout West Virgina 1-0 in Morgantown. Bowling Green improves to 8-3-1 with a 1-0-0 mark in MAC contests.  
Brad Ruhaak - Senior - Defender - Akron Ruhaak anchored a very solid Akron backline along with fellow senior back Danilo Radjen that shutout what has been a very productive Buffalo offense in a 4-0 win. Ruhaak also decisively drove a header in the back of the frame out of a corner kick to record Akron's first goal in this Mid-American Conference opener for both teams. Akron improves to 6-3-1 overall with a 1-0-0 mark in MAC play.  
Bernardo Mattos - Senior - Defender - Albany Mattos was a key part in an Albany defense that enabled the Great Danes to contain a very good Syracuse attack and secure a 2-1 win over Syracuse. He also was at the heart of an Albany defense that shutout a potent Vermont offense in route to a 4-0 victory in an American East Conference contest. Mattos missed the first four contests of the season but since his return the Great Dane defense has gelled. Albany head coach Trevor Gorman stated, "We'll take our defenders any day of the week." Albany is 6-3-2 overall with a 1-0-1 mark in league play.  
Cory Brown - Junior - Defender - Xavier Brown converted a header after receiving a cross from defender Josh Grant to lift the Musketeers to a 1-0 win on the road over a determined Cleveland State team. Senior forward Jalen Brown was credited with the assist on the goal. Brown also was at the center of an Xavier defense that shutout St. John's 2-0. Jalen Brown and Majed Osman provided the goals in that contest. Xavier is now 6-3-2 overall with a 3-1-0 mark in Big East action. 
Jon Wendt - Junior - Goalkeeper - Air Force Wendt made several huge saves including a stop of a penalty kick to anchor an Air Force defense that shutout Grand Canyon 1-0 on the road in a Western Athletic Conference contest. Midfielder Tucker Bone scored the lone goal of the evening before a crowd of 3,800 fans.  The Falcons are looking good with a 9-3-0 overall record and a 3-0-0 mark in league play. 

 

College Soccer News - National Team Of The Week - Week Ending October 2, 2016

Jon Gallagher - Junior - Forward - Notre Dame  Gallahger continues to play a key role in the Irish attack scoring twice to lead Notre Dame to a 2-0 win over Pitt. Gallagher has tallied a total of eight goals so far this season. Notre Dame improves to 8-1-0 overall with a 3-1-0 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play. 
Albert Ruiz - Junior - Forward - FGCU  In what will no doubt be one of the more unusual contests of the 2016 season, Ruiz exploded for three goals by the 9:02 mark of the contest as FGCU jumped out to what appeared to be an unsurmoutable 5-0 advantage. Rutgers responded with five goals of their own but FGCU added one more and prevailed 6-5. Ruiz has scored a total of eleven goals to date including two hat tricks. FGCU is among the hottest teams in the country having won seven straight to improve to 7-2-1.
Frederick Karman - GS - Forward - St. Mary's (Ca) Karman drove a rebound into the back of the net from close range and controlled a loose ball in the box and drove it into the back of the net in overtime to give the Gaels a 2-1 win over West Virginia in Morgantown. St. Mary's improves to 3-5-3 while West Virgina drops to 6-2-1.  
Frantzdy Pierrot - Junior - Forward - Coastal Carolina Pierrot netted the Chanticleers first goal in their 2-0 on the road win over the College of Charleston. He also scored twice including the game-winner to lead Coastal Carolina in a 3-2 come from behind win over Old Dominion. The Chanticleers gain momentum and imnprove to 4-4-1 overall. 
Ryan Sierakowski - Soph - Forward - Michigan State Sierakowski came up big twice this week for the Spartans netting the game-winning goals in their 1-0 win over Bowling Green and in thier 1-0 win over Ohio State in a Big Ten Conference game. All four of Sierakowski's goals this year have been game-winners. Michigan State improves to 7-2-0 overall with a 3-1-0 mark in conference play.  
Austin Dewing - Sophomore - Forward - Air Force Dewing scored twice to power the Falcons past Houston Baptist University 2-0. He also contributed an assist on teammate Klint Parker's goal in Air Force's 4-2 win over Incarnate Word. Dewing has recorded three two-goal games in Air Force's last five contests. The Falcons are 8-3-0 overall with a 2-0-0 mark in Western Athletic Confernce play. 
Ricky Chavez - Senior - Midfielder - UNCG Chavez placed a shot into the top corner of the net out of a free kick from twenty-five yards out in UNCG's 4-0 win over VMI and found the back of the net in overtime from twenty-five yards out to give the Spartans the edge they needed to top Furman 1-0. UNCG ups their record to 6-2-2 overall with a 2-0-0 mark in Southern Conference action. 
Chris Wehan - RS Senior - Midfielder - New Mexico Wehan scored twice in the first half of play to power the Lobos to a 4-1 win over FIU in a Conference USA contest. New Mexico is now 6-3-0 overall with a 1-1-0 mark in conference play.  
Mike Catalano - Junior - Midfielder - Wisconsin Catalano produced the insurance goal in Wisconsin's 2-0 win over Saint Louis and made a nice move through traffic to send a pass to teammate Sam Brotherton that Brotherton was able to blast into the back of the frame to give the Badgers the advantage they needed to top Rutgers 1-0 in a Big Ten contest.  Wisconsin is now 5-2-1 overall with a 3-1-0 mark in conference action. 
Jordan Wilson - Senior - Defender - Kentucky Wilson was at the heart of a solid Wildcat defense that shutout Charlotte 1-0. In addition his header in the 108th minute of play out of a corner kick served in by teammate Napo Matsoso was the difference maker on the offensive side of the ball in this crucial Conference USA matchup. Kentucky also tied Lipscomb 1-1 in a non-conference match. The Wildcats are now 6-2-2 overall with a 2-1-0 mark in conference contests.  
Matt Callahan - Senior - Defender - San Diego State The San Diego State co-captain was solid on both sides of the ball for the Aztecs in their 1-1 tie with Oregon State and their 1-0 win over Washington. Callahan was responsible for SDSU's lone goal in the draw with Oregon State. The Aztecs are 6-1-3 overall with a 1-0-1 mark in Pac-12 play. 
Scott Levene - RS Junior - Goalkeeper - Connecticut Levene anchored a solid UConn defense that shutout Providence 1-0 and Tulsa 1-0 on the road. In the contest with Tulsa he had a five save evening that included a huge stop on a penalty kick. Connecticut has now won five straight to improve to 8-3-0 with a 2-0-0 mark in American Athletic Conference play.

Chris Arling - Sophomore - Forward - New Hampshire 

Arling scored twice to lead the Wildcat offense in a 3-0 win over Northeastern. In New Hampshire's 3-0 win over Yale he contributed an assist on teammate freshman midfielder Jack Dickinson's goal, scored from six yards out with a helper from Dickinson, and decisively drove a header into the back of the net out of a free kick served in by sophomore midfielder Alex Valencia. Arling has scored a total of nine goals so far this year. New Hampshire improves to 8-1-0.

Riggs Lennon - Senior - Forward - Creighton The senior transfer from the University of Virginia who is from Paradise Valley, Arizona tied a Creighton school-record when he found the back of the net four times to power the Bluejays past DePaul 4-1. His first goal came from the middle of the box after receiving a cross from Noah Franke. Goal two was a header out of a corner kick served in by Joel Rydstrand. Goal three was at close range with an assist from Akeem Ward. Lennon's fourth goal was a one-timer to the far post with Franke and Myles Englis contributing helpers. Creighton improves to 5-1-2 with a 2-0-0 mark in Big East action.   
Justin Dhillon - Senior - Forward - Cal Poly  Dhillon's fifth goal of the year was the game-winner in Cal Poly's 1-0 win over UCLA before a crowd of 7,032 fans at Alex G. Spanos Stadium in San Luis Obispo, California. Dhillon sent a blast into the top right corner of the net from thirty yards out after receiving and controlling a pass from teammate sophomore defender Nick Carroll. Junior Eric Kam had two saves in goal to record the shutout for the Mustangs who are now 2-4-1 after a very competitive schedule to date that should prepare them well for Big West Conference play. 
Nils Bruening - Sophomore - Forward - North Carolina The Tar Heel forward wore out the back of the net Friday night with a four goal evening to lead UNC to a decisive 5-0 victory over Boston College. Goal one was a one-timer into the net after receiving a cross from Alan Winn. Goal two was another one-timer from within the box with helpers from Nico Melo and Winn. Goal three came after recieving a cross from Zach Wright. Bruening's final goal came off the far post with Jack Skahan and Wright contributing assists. UNC also topped William and Mary on Tuesday and is 7-1-0 overall and 3-0-0 in ACC play.  It was a good weekend on the gridiron and on the soccer pitch for UNC. 
Arion Sobers-Assue - RS Sophomore - Forward - FGCU Few players in the country had a more productive week on the offensive side of the ball than Sobers-Assue. He posted a hat trick to lead the Eagles in a 5-1 thumping of FAU on Tuesday evening in Fort Myers.  He also scored from within the box after receiving a pass from senior forward Dylan Sacramento in FGCU's 4-1 win Saturday night on the road over NJIT in an Atlantic Sun Conference contest. Sacramento also netted two goals in the win over NJIT. FGCU has now won six straight to improve to 6-2-1 with a 1-0-0 mark in ASUN play.   
Mohamed Thiaw - Junior - Forward - Louisville  Thiaw, who was a two-time NSCAA All-American at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College before transferring to Louisville this year, continues to be a difference maker for the Cardinals.  He scored the game-winning goal with an assist from junior back Tim Kubel to give Lousiville the edge they needed to top Saint Louis on the road.  Thiaw also scored twice in Louisville's surprising 6-1 thumping of Virginia. Louisville extended its winning streak to five games in a row to improve to 7-1-1 overall with a 3-0-0 mark in ACC play. 
Jalen Brown - Senior - Midfielder - Xavier  Brown is among the reasons why Xavier has won three out of their last four contests. He made a nice run down the left side of the pitch to put himself in position to one-time a shot into the back of the frame after receiving a pass from teammate Majed Osman. He also was credited with an assist along with Matt Nance on forward Matt Vasquenza's goal in the Musketeers 2-0 win on the road over Georgetown. Xavier is now 4-2-2 overall with a 2-0-0 mark in Big East play. 
Kurtis Turner - Senior - Midfielder - South Carolina   Turner has been an impact player since arriving on campus as a freshman. He scored South Carolina's first goal from twenty yards out with an assist from freshman forward Luca Mayr to help the Gamecocks secure a solid win over in-state rival Furman 3-0.  He also assisted on teammate Koty Millards goal in South Carolina's 3-1 victory over Georgia State. South Carolina has now won four straight to improve to 5-3-0. 
Julio Cervantes - Senior - Midfielder - Pacific Cervantes has been a catalyst on the offensive side of the ball for Pacific. He netted the insurance goal with a double assist from Anthony Orendain and Tristan Blackman in the Tiger's 2-0 on the road upset win over San Diego State. He also scored Pacific's first goal with Blackman supplying the helper in their 2-0 win on the road over Cal State Fullerton. Cervantes has scored in three straight games for Pacific. The Tigers have won six straight to up their record to date to 7-2-0. 
Graham Smith - Junior - Midfielder - Denver  The Pioneer defensive midfielder contributued on both sides of the ball this week.  He was part of a solid Denver defensive effort that resulted in a 0-0 tie with Creighton on Wednesday night at Morrison Stadium in Omaha. He also scored the Pioneers opening goal and then added the game-winning goal to enable Denver to slip past Fort Wayne 4-3 in a closer than anticipated contest at home in the Pioneers season opening Summit League game. Denver is now 8-0-2 with a 1-0-0 mark in Summit League play. 
Tim Kubel -  Junior - Defender - Louisville  Kubel was part of a rock solid Louisville defense that shutout Saint Louis 1-0. He also contributed the assist on teammate Mohamed Thiaw's game-winning goal in that contest. Kubel followed that game up with a four assist evening to play a key role in Louisville's 6-1 win over a highly regarded Virginia team. The four assists established a new school record for assists in a single contest and upped his total to seven so far this year. Louisville has now won five straight to improve to improve to 7-1-1.  
Aaron Jones - Senior - Defender - Clemson  Jones contributed on both sides of the ball helping Clemson secure a 5-0 win over non-conference foe Gardner-Webb and a 2-1 win on the road over Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia Tech. He assisted on one of teammate Diego Campos' two goals in the win over Gardner-Webb and scored the Tiger's first goal in the contest with the Hokies when he surgically placed a shot around the Virgina Tech wall and into the netting out of a free kick from just outside the box. Clemson improves to 5-1-1 with a 1-1-1 mark in conference play. 
Alec Ferrell - RS Senior - Goalkeeper - Wake Forest  Ferrell along with backs Kevin Politz, Logan Gdula, Hunter Bandy and Sam Raden have been a part of a tenacious Demon Deacon defense that has not been scored on in 728:28 minutes while recording seven clean sheets in a row.  Ferrell had five saves in Wake Forest's 2-0 win over FIU and four saves in their 1-0 win over N.C. State in an ACC contest. The Deacons are now 7-1-1 overall with a 3-0-0 mark in ACC play.
