College Soccer News National Team Of The Week - Week Ending October 13, 2013

Tim Hopkinson - Senior - Forward - Old Dominion

Hopkinson played a key role in two impressive ODU wins.  He provided the assist on teammate Gideon Asante's goal and netted the game-winning goal in overtime in ODU's 2-1 on the road win over Charlotte.  He also headed in the game-winning goal in overtime off an assist from Michael Nelson in ODU's 3-2 win over UAB. Hopkinson has eight goals so far this year. 

Patrick Mullins - Senior - Forward - Maryland

Mullins was at the center of the Terp attack in two challenging on the road matches this week. He scored the lone Maryland goal out of a counter attack with his left foot from fifteen yards out in Maryland's 1-1 tie with Notre Dame. He also converted two penalty kicks and assisted on Tsubasa Endoh's goal in Maryland's 3-3 tie with Virginia in Charlottesville.  

C Nortey - RS Sophomore - Forward - Marquette

The striker from Accra, Ghana had another big week of play for Marquette.  He netted the lone goal of the match giving Marquette the edge they needed to top highly regarded Creighton 1-0.  He also scored the game-winning goal in overtime to help the Golden Eagles top a good Butler team 3-2.  Marquette is 8-3-1 with a 4-0-0 mark in Big East competition.  

Joey Tinnion - Junior - Forward - Oakland

Tinnion contiues to take care of business on the pitch for Oakland.  After receiving a pass from teammate Gavin Hoy he made a nice move to create the space he needed to slot a shot inside the far left post in Oakland's 1-1 tie with Denver. He also netted the eventual game-winning goal when he drove a shot into the left side of the frame in Oakland's 2-1 victory over Wright State.

Will Walker - RS Junior - Midfielder - Xavier 

Walker scored twice to lead the Musketeers to a big come from behind 2-1 Big East win over the Georgetown Hoyas.  He one-timed his first goal into the back of the net after receiving a pass from teammate Garrett Halfhill.  Calum Latham and Matt Walker contributed the assist on Walker's second goal.  Xavier improves to 6-5-2.

Adam Najem - Freshman - Midfielder - Akron

The highly regarded Akron recruit scored twice to power Akron to a 2-1 win over a game Cleveland State team.  His first score came off an assist from senior forward Reinaldo Brenes.  He netted his second goal from the top of the box after receiving a cross from junior forward Saad Abdul-Salaam.  Akron improves to 8-3-0. 

Ritchie Duffie - RS Junior - Midfieder - VCU

Duffie added an additional dimension to the VCU offense scoring his first two career goals at VCU and contributing an assist to help the Rams secure Atlantic 10 wins over Massachusetts and Rhode Island.  He placed a shot into the lower left corner of the goal from the top of the box in the 4-0 win over Massachusetts. He also headed in VCU's first score in their 3-1 win over Rhode Island. 

Slobodan Aleksov - Senior - Midfielder - UIC

The UIC senior captain scored twice including the game-winning goal in overtime to lead UIC to a 2-1 win over Eastern Illinios. Credit junior Jesus Torres with the assists on both goals.  Alkesov also converted a penalty kick in UIC's 2-0 win over Detroit.  He has five goals so far this year. The Flames improve to 9-3-0.  

Jason Plumhoff - Senior - Midfielder - LaSalle

Plumoff had a very productive weekend of play. He scored and contriubuted two assists in LaSalle's 3-1 victory over Duquesne.  He also contributed the assist on teammate Pat Sulliman's goal and netted the game-winning goal to lead the Explorers past St. Bonaventure 2-1.  LaSalle is 5-5-2.  

A.J. Cochran - Junior - Defender - Wisconsin

Cochran helped the Badgers extend their home unbeaten streak to nine games and up their overall record to 8-2-1 by scoring two goals including the eventual game-winning score in Wisconsin's electrifying come from behind 4-3 win over Indiana at McClimon Complex. Wisconsin also secured a 3-2 win over Drake earlier in the week.    

Sven Lissek - Sophomore - Goalkeeper - Furman

Lissek continues to make the stops that he needs to make to enable the Paladins to prevail. This week he improved his Southern Conference leading goals against average to 0.44 in route to recording shutouts in matches with Davidson 2-0 and old Furman nemesis UNC Greensboro 0-0. Furman improves to 8-1-2 while recording eight clean sheets in their last nine contests.

Harrison Shipp - Senior - Forward - Notre Dame

The Irish team captain contributed the assist on the goals scored by Vince Cicciarelli and Patrick Hodan in Notre Dame's 2-0 win over Indiana. He scored twice including the game-winner in overtime to lead the Irish to a 2-1 win over Clemson. Notre Dame is 6-0-3.

Steve Neumann - Senior - Forward - Georgetown

Neumann provided the helper on freshman Joshua Yaro's game-winner in Georgetown's 1-0 win over American.  He also netted his second-career hat trick and contributed an assist to help power the Hoya's past Big East foe Seton Hall 8-0. Georgetown is 8-2-1.  

Christian Okeke - Freshman - Forward - Bradley

Okeke's first two career goals were big ones helping Bradley secure a 3-2 on the road win over Northwestern. The first came after he controlled a loose ball and made a nice move to create the space he needed at the top of the box to score. His game-winning strike in o.t. was from 20 yards out after receiving a picture perfect pass from senior Wojciech Wojcik.   

Emil Ekblom - Freshman - Forward - Syracuse

Ekblom, who hails from Bekkestva, Norway, was in the right place at the right time for Syracuse scoring three times and contributing an assist to help the Orange crush N.C. State 5-0.  HIs first two goals were off rebounds and his third came after receiving a well played through ball from teammate Oyvind Alseth.   

Adam Montague - Junior - Forward - Michigan State

Montague played a key role in two solid on the road wins for Michigan State.  He alertly placed a rebound in the back of the net to help the Spartans top UIC 2-0.  He also netted the game-winning goal in the second overtime period with a big assist from Brent McIntosh to give Michigan State the edge they needed to top Northwestern 3-2 in a hard fought Big Ten contest.  

Eric Bird - Junior - Midfielder - Virginia

Bird provided the helper on teammate Darius Madison's goal and then scored the game-winning goal in overtime when he calmly collected a loose ball in the box and slotted it just inside the far post from twelve yards out to give Virginia a big 2-1 win over VCU.  Bird also scored from the top of the box in Virginia's 5-0 thumping of Pitt.  

Laurie Bell - Junior - Midfielder - Milwaukee

Bell and his Milwaukee teammates continue to take care of business. Bell, who is a team captain, contributed a goal out of a penalty kick and added an assist to help the Panthers top Nebraska Omaha 3-1.  He also scored and tallied a helper in Milwaukee's 3-0 win over Wright State. Bell has scored seven goals to date.  The Panthers are 9-0-1.  

Pedro Ribeiro - Senior - Midfielder - Coastal Carolina  

Ribeiro drove a free kick into the upper left corner of the goal from thirty-five yards out in the second overtime period to lift the Chanticleers to a 2-1 win over a very determined High Point University team. The goal was Ribeiro's sixth of the season. Coastal Carolina has won six straight to up their record to 7-2-0.  

Anders Vest-Hansen - Junior - Midfielder - FDU

Vest-Hansen twice provided the iceing on the cake for Fairleigh Dickinson during the week.  He converted a penalty kick in overtime in FDU's 2-1 win over St. John's before an impressive crowd at University Stadium in Teaneck.  He also netted a penalty kick in overtime to give FDU the edge needed to top Siena 3-2.   

Taylor Peay - Senior - Defender - Washington

Peay scored out of a corner served in by junior Darwin Jones in Washington's 3-1 win over Stanford.  Jamie Clark stated, "He (Peay) is getting double teamed on every set piece, but is so strong that he was able to fight to get his head on the ball." Peay also converted a header out of a corner put in play by James Moberg to give Washington the equalizer in their 1-1 tie with California. 

Mateo Munarriz - Junior - Goalkeeper - Hartwick

Munarriz had a thirteen stop evening including a save on a penalty kick to play a key role in Hartwick's 2-0 on the road MAC win over Akron. The win halted Akron's forty-nine game conference unbeaten streak and was Hartwick's first victory over the Zips since 1973. Hartwick coach John Scott stated, "Mateo was busy and he did his job."

Jordan Morris - Freshman - Forward - Stanford

Morris scored twice to lead the Cardinal past UCSB at Harder Stadium.  His first goal was a header out of a free kick put into play by teammate Aaron Kovar.  His second score resulted from a ricochet that he decisively one-timed into the back of the net from twenty-five yards out.  Stanford has won five straight to improve to 5-1-1.   

Jake Pace - Senior - Forward - Maryland

Pace contributed the assist on teammate David Kabelik's goal in Maryland's 1-1 tie with Old Dominion and scored twice to lead the Terps past Pittsburgh 2-0. His first goal was a chip shot over the Pitt netminder. He also skillfully controlled and then sloted a rebound into the back of the net.  The Terps are now 3-2-3.  

Aaron Horvat - Sophomore - Forward - Milwaukee

Horvat was a scoring machine as he netted four goals to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee past the University of Detroit 5-3.  He became the first UWM player to post a hat trick since Neil Dombrowski did so in 2005.  With the win the Panthers improve to 7-0-1 with a 1-0-0 mark in Horizon League play. 

Jamie Dubyoski - Sophomore - Forward - Navy 

Dubyoski had a productive week of play netting a pair of game winning goals.  Against Virginia Tech he utilized his left foot to slot a shot just inside the left post with assists from Grant Valenstein and Dave Arnold. He also one-timed a left footer into the back of the frame to give Navy the edge they needed to sink Boston University 1-0.  Navy is 4-3-2.  

  Andrew Brody - Freshman - Midfielder - Louisville

The highly regarded Louisville freshman is living up to expectations.  Brody provided the helper on Ricardo Velazco's goal and blasted a picture perfect shot into the back of the net from twenty-two yards out to help Louisville top Temple 3-0.  Brody has a team leading five assists to date.  The Cardinals improve to 6-2-0. 

Ken Tribbett - Senior - Midfielder - Drexel

Tribbett netted the insurance goal with an assist from teammate Adam Arana in Drexel's 2-0 win over Rutgers. He also contributed the game-winning goal when he blasted a shot from just outside the box that found its way into the back of the net in the Dragon's  2-1 win over William and Mary.  Drexel has rebounded to win five straight to improve to 5-2-1. 

Zach Steinberger - Junior - Midfielder - Butler

Steinberger and teammate forward David Goldsmith played key roles in two impressive Butler victories.   Goldsmith scored twice to help Butler come from behind to top Indiana 3-2.  Steinberger netted both goals in Butler's 2-0 Big East Conference win over Villanova.  A hot Butler side improves to 7-1-1.  

Enrique Cardenas - Senior - Midfielder - UC Irvine

Cardenas continues to make big plays for the Anteaters.  He skillfully sent a rebound of his own shot into the goal and placed a chip shot into the back of the net to lead UC Irvine to a 3-0 win over CSUB.  He contriubuted the assist on teammate Cameron Iwasa's goal.  Cardenas has six goals including three game-winners so far this year.  

Zach Bolden, Senior - Midfielder - Denver

Bolden assisted on freshman Eric Kronenberg's game-winning goal in Denver's 1-0 on the road win over Portland.  He also netted what proved to be the game-winning goal in Denver's 2-1 come from behind win over Cal Poly when he deftly placed a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal off an assist from teammate Reagan Dunk.  

Braedon Troyer - Junior - Defender - South Carolina

Troyer played in a key role in South Carolina's 2-1 on the road CUSA win over Charlotte.  He was solid on the defensive side of the ball and netted the game-winning goal for South Carolina when he collected a rebound out of a corner kick and drove it into the net from twenty-five yards out to give the Gamecocks the margin they needed to secure the win.  

Omar Zeenni - Senior - Goalkeeper - UC Davis

Zeenni had a big seven save night between the pipes making the key stops that he needed to make to give the Aggies the chance to upset New Mexico 2-1 in Albuquerque. UC Davis head coach Dwayne Shaffer stated, "I thought my team played really well tonight. We were organized, disciplined and did all the right things to win the game."

Harrison Shipp - Senior - Forward - Notre Dame

The Irish Captain made a nice move to create space and slotted a shot into the lower left corner of the net in Notre Dame's 3-0 win over Michigan.  He also scored the lone goal for the Irish off an assist from Vince Cicciarelli in their 1-1 tie with Boston College. 

Achille Campion - Senior - Forward - UC Santa Barbara Campion scored twice to lead UCSB to a 3-1 win over Yale.  His first goal was at close range with an assist from Ismaila Jome and Drew Murphy.  Campion's second goal was a picture perfect scissor kick to the near post.  The win gave coach Tim Vom Steeg his 200th career win at the Division I level. 
Mark Wadid - Freshman - Forward - Penn State

Wadid netted the game winning goal for the Nittany Lions in their 1-0 win over Robert Morris and thier 1-0 win over Duquesne.  He slotted a shot into the lower right corner of the goal after receiving a through ball in the match with Robert Morris.  Against Duquesne he drove a shot into the back of the net from 8 yards out. 

Patrick Mullins - Senior - Forward - Maryland 

Mullins, who was at the center of the Terp attack, converted two penalty kicks to lead Maryland to a 3-1 win over Clemson at Riggs Field.  The second penalty kick resulted when he was pulled down in the box.  Maryland improves to 2-2-2 with a 2-0-1 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play.   

Geaton Caltabiano - Junior - Midfielder - UMBC

Caltabiano contributed a goal and an assist in UMBC's 3-2 overtime win over Navy.  He also scored a goal and contributed a helper to lead the Retrievers past previously undefeated Loyola (MD) 3-1.  Caltabiano has seven assists to date.  UMBC improves their record to 7-0-0.  

Jaime Velasco - Sophomore - Midfielder - Portland

Velasco scored twice to help spark Portland to a 3-0 win over Oregon State.  His first goal was a chip shot over the Oregon State netminder. His second score came as a result of a failed clearance that he alertly controlled and placed in the back of the net. Portland has now won three straight.   

Steve Birnbaum - Senior - Defender - California

Birnbaum continues to be an impact player on both sides of the ball for the Golden Bears. This weekend he added a goal in Cal's 3-0 victory over Colgate and in their 3-1 win over the College of Charleston.  He also has been part of a very steady California defensive.  

Connor Drechsler - Senior - Defender - Cal Poly

Drechsler played a role in Cal Poly's 2-0 win over San Francisco and 3-2 victory over Yale. In each contest he directed a header into the back of the net and played a key role in anchoring the Mustang defense. Cal Poly has won four straight to up their record to 6-2-0.  

Chris Makowski - Junior - Defender - Syracuse

Makowski was part of a very solid Orange defensive effort that helped produce a 1-0 win over Connecticut and a 2-1 victory over Duke on the road in ACC play.  He also added an additional element to the Syracuse attack.  The Orange improve to 5-2-0.   

Zach Kovacevic - Junior - Defender - Bradley

Kovacevic's goal 32 seconds into the second stanza proved to be the game-winner in Bradley's 2-0 win over Air Force.  He also was a key part of a Bradley defense that limited Denver and Air Force to just nine combined shots on goal in two games.  Bradley is now 4-2-1. 

Devin Cook - Sophomore - Goalkeeper - Coastal Carolina

Cook anchored a solid Coastal Carolina defensive effort that shutout Presbyterian College 4-0 and VCU 1-0. Cook had three saves in the contest with Presbyterian and four saves in the victory over VCU including a key stop on a penalty kick. The Chanticleers have won four straight to improve to 5-2-0.
