College Soccer News - Men's National Team Of The Week - Week Ending October 25, 2020

It was a week of close contests with several games requiring ovetime to determine the outcome. The College Soccer News Team of the Week seeks to recognize individual performers on both sides of the ball who were difference makers during the week.    

Grayson Barber

Clemson

Barber is a catalyst on the offensive side of the ball for Clemson. This week he scored the lone goal in the Tigers' 1-0 on the road win over NC State. After receiving a pass from Luis Felipe Fernandez-Salvador, he made a nice move at the top of the box to create the angle he needed to place a shot into the back of the frame. Clemson improves to 5-1-0.  

Jack Lynn

Notre Dame

Lynn was a force on the offensive side of the ball for the Irish. He converted a header put in play by Patrick Coleman to help the Irish come from behind to top Virginia 2-1 in double overtime. The goal was Lynn's third of the year and the 16th of his career. The Irish improve to 3-2-0.

Blacklock made a nice move in the box off the dribble to create the angle and the space he needed to drive a shot into the bottom right corner of the net in Virginia Tech's 1-1 tie with Syracuse. The Hokies are 0-1-2. 

Ethan Hackenberg

Coastal Carolina

Hackenberg came through in the clutch for the Chanticleers when he converted a header served in by Thomas Fielding with only 33 seconds remaining in fhe first overtime period. Coastal Carolina topped Georgia Southern 2-1 to improve to 4-0-0. 

John Martin

Martin was part of a very solid Tiger defense that shutout NC State 1-0 in Raleigh. Clemson improves to 5-1-0.  Martin and his Tiger teammates have a crucial  ACC contest  coming up on Tuesday, October 27 when they tangle with UNC at Historic Riggs Field.  

Omar Hernandez

Hernandez scored out of a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box with five minutes remaining in regulartion to give the Demon Deacons the advantage they need to top Duke 2-1 on the road in an ACC contest. Wake Forest is now 5-1-0. 

Veljko Petkovic

Pittsburgh

Petkovic contributed the assist on the goals scored by Bryce Washington and Filip Mirkovic to help power Pittsburgh by Louisville 4-1. The Panthers improve to 5-0-0. 

Sondre Norheim

Norheim drove a header into the back of the frame and was part of a tough Syracuse defensive effort that resulted in a 1-1 tie on the road with Virginia Tech in ACC play.   

Bryce Washington

Washington began the scoring for Pittsburgh in their 4-1 win over Louisville when he drove a header into the back of the frame out of a corner kick. He has also been a key part of Pitts backline. The Panthers are now 5-0-0.

Suarez was part of a rock solid Central Arkansas defense that limited Georgia State to only two shots while recording a 2-0 win. The Bears improve to 2-4-0 with a 2-2-0 mark in Sun Belt play.

The Irish center back  made an impact on both sides of the ball including a crucial game saving clear in Notre Dame's 2-1 come from behind win in overtime against Virginia. The Irish improve to 3-2-0.

Shealy had an eight save evening between the pipes including four saves in overtime in Syracuse's 1-1 tie on the road with Virginia Tech. The Orange are now 0-2-2.

Krapf had a career-high seven saves in goal for  NC State in a hard fought 1-0 loss to a very good Clemson team. 

 

 

College Soccer News - Women's National Team Of The Week - Week Ending October 25, 2020

It was a gut check type of week for teams across the country with big time players making big plays under pressure. The College Soccer News Team of the Week recognizes individual performers on both sides of the ball who played a key role in the success of their teams during the week. 

Haley Hopkins

Hopkins, who hails from Newport Beach, California, came up big for the Commodores with a game-winning header in the 88th minute of the match that was set up by a perfect  cross from midfielder Leila Azari. Vanderbilt edged Georgia 1-0 to improve to 3-3-0.  

Lauren Geczik

Geczik utilized her quickness and touch on the ball to score from six and eight yards out in the first half of play to help power the Aggies past Tennessee 3-1. Texas A and M improves to 4-1-0.

Collins assisted on the goal scored by teammate Gracie Brian and drove a shot into the far post in overtime to give TCU a 3-2 come from behind win over Kansas State. TCU also had a very good 2-0 win over Kansas. 

Kailey Littleford

Littleford had a productive week of play for the Jaguars. She assisted on sophomore Gracie Wilson's game-winning goal in South Alabama's 1-0 win over Georgia Southern and scored twice in their 3-0 win over Georgia State. The Jaguars are 8-3-0.

The Irish captain came through under pressure when she converted a penalty kick that was the result of a handball in the box. Dyke was part of a determined Notre Dame effort on both sides of the ball that resulted in a 1-0 win over Louisville. The Irish improve to 4-3-0.

McKeon netted her third goal in the last four contests when she alertly controlled a deflection and sent it  back into the net from just inside the middle of the top of the box to help the Razorbacks top Ole Miss 2-1 on the road. Arkansas is now 5-1-0.

Gray makes good things happen for the Hokies. She contributed the helper on the goals scored by teammates Tori Powell and Allyson Brown to help Virginia Tech top Navy 2-1 on senior day in Blacksburg. The Hokies are 3-7-0.

Dickinson contributed the golden goal in the second overtime period to give Central Arkansas a 1-0 win over Missouri State. The goal was set up by a nice pass from Abby Gibson that Dickinson ran onto and skillfully finished. UCA improves to 8-2-1.

Jones scored twice out of corner kicks to help propel the Gamecocks to a 4-2 win over the Florida Gators. The win was the fifth straignt for South Carolina and the 300th win for South Carolina head coach Shelley Smith.

Brewster was a key part of a solid West Virginia backline that also included Mackenzie Aunkst, Nicole Payne and Gabrielle Robinson that shutout Big 12 foe  Oklahoma 1-0 in Norman. West Virginia is now 6-1-0.

Grosso put in a full 110 minute shift on the defensive side of the ball for a bend but don't break Kentucky defense that resulted in a 1-1 tie on the road with Auburn. The Wildcats are 0-3-3. .

Plotz, who is from Merritt Island, Florida was rock solid in goal for Oklahoma State with a five save evening that helped the Cowgirls shutout Texas 2-0. OSU improves to 4-2-1.

The College Soccer News Team of the Week features impact players on both sides of the ball who contributed to the success that their team enjoyed during a week of play that included more than the usual number of of close contests.

Brighton returned the rebound of teammate Grayson Barber's shot into the bottom right corner of the net and drove a header into back of the net from the middle of the box in overtime to give Clemson a hard fought 2-1 win over a determined Duke team.  

Deandre Kerr

Kerr made a nice move to create the angle he needed to score from just inside the box and also found the back of the net after receiving a cross from Hilli Goldhar in Syracue's 2-2 tie with ACC foe Louisville. Syracuse is 0-2-1.

Smith scored from within the box after receiving a cross from Grayson Barber and assisted on Luis Felipe Fernandez-Salvador game winning goal in Clemson's 2-1 win over Wake Forest.  He also provided the helper on James Brighton's game winning goal over Duke. Clemson is 4-1-0.

Holcomb decisively placed a header into the back of the net in overtime after receiving a well played and timed cross from sophomore midfielder Omar Hernandez. The Deacons rebound from a 2-1 loss to Clemson with a 1-0 win over UNC to improve to 4-1-0.

Noel scored twice in the first half to play a key role in the Panthers 3-2 on the road win in overtime against Virginia. Noel has scored four goals to date for the Panthers who are now 4-0-0 overall with a 3-0-0 mark in ACC action.

Jackson contributed the assist on junior defender Matt Nocita's goal and scored the game-winner  when he alertly returned  the rebound of his own missed penalty kick back into the net. The Midshipmen open the fall 2020 season with a solid  2-1 on the road win over NC State.

ElMedkhar scored out of a give and go with Eythor Bjorgolfsson and assisted on the goal scored by teammate Bailey Rouse in Kentucky's 3-1 win over Mercer. He also converted a penalty kick in Kentucky's 2-1 win over UAB. The Wildcats improve to 5-1-0.

Bennett scored twice and assisted on the goal scored by teammate Matthew Fearnley to help power Georgia State past rival Georgia Southern 3-1. Georgia State also defeated UAB 4-1 earlier in the week. The Panthers improve to 7-1-0 with a 2-1-0 mark in Sun Belt Conference play.

Lage scored in the Chanticleers 3-2 win over Central Arkansas with an assist from Marcello Jones. He also controlled a loose ball from within the box and deposited it into the back of the net to give Coastal Carolina the edge they needed to top Central Arkansas 1-0 in overtime.

Ordonez drove a header into the back of the frame in overtime out of a corner kick served in by sophomore defender Raphael Crivello to give the Panthers the edge they needed to top Virginia 3-2 in Charlottesville. Pitt improves to 4-0-0.

Saunders had a nine save evening in goal in Coastal Carolina's 3 to 2 win over Central Arkansas on Friday and ten save contest in the Chanticleers 1-0 win in overtime against Central Arkansas on Sunday.

Nesbeth used her touch on the ball to create the space and angle she needed to drive a shot into the back of the frame from thirty yards out in FSU's 4-1 win over Pitt. Nesbeth also made a nice secondary run into space to finish a pass from redshirt senior Malia Berkely in FSU's 4-3 win on the road over Virginia.

Babineaux's first goal at Troy was a big one. She drove a shot into the upper right corner of the net from twenty-five yards out that gave Troy the edge they needed to upset Coastal Carolina 1-0. Sophomore forward Melissa Kuya-Strobel provided the assist on the goal and Lindsey LaRoche earned the shutout in goal.

Brough powered Central Arkansas to a 3-1 win over Missouri State with a two goal evening. She skillfully chipped a shot into the back of the net and drove a shot into the bottom left corner of the frame that was set up by a nice move and cross from junior midfielder Morgan Rollow.  The Bears are 6-2-1.

Dellaperuta recorded her first career goal when she sent the rebound of teammate Rachel Jones' shot into the back of the frame in the Tar Heels 2-0 win over Syracuse. She also scored from the top of the box in North Carolina's 3-1 win on the road over Boston College. The Tar Heels improve to 6-0-0. 

Samantha Chang

South Carolina

Chang made a nice run into open space after creating a turnover and scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in South Carolina's 2-1 win on the road over a highly regarded Arkansas team. Chang's goal was set up by a nice combination of passes from Claire Griffiths and Catherine Barry.  The Gamecocks improve to 4-1-0.

Berg who is from Celina, Texas scored out of a free kick from twenty-two yards out to give Texas the edge they needed to top Iowa State 1-0 in a Big 12 Conferece contest. The goal was Berg's second of the season and 22nd of her career. Texas is 3-3-0.

Olivieri was again a force on the offensive side of the ball for the Maroon and White. She scored twice during a span of a little less than three minutes to power the Aggies past Mississippi State 3-0.  Texas A and M improves to 3-1-0.

Hansen was a key part of a rock solid Kansas team oriented defense that along with keeper  Sarah Peters among others shutout Oklahoma State 1-0 at Rock Chalk Park in this Big 12 contest. Kansas improves to 4-1-0.

Houchin anchored a solid  Auburn defense that showed a lot of grit in posting a 1-0 win in overtime against Mississippi and a 1-0 win on the road over a very good Georgia team in which the Tigers played a man down for the final 35 minutes of the match. Auburn improves to 2-0-1.

The junior defender made the run that she needed to make to be in position to net the golden goal in the 96th minute of play with a double assist from Marykate McGuire and Karlie Paschall. She also provided a helper on one of sister Maggie Graham's two goals in Duke's 4-0 victory over Syracuse. Duke improves to 5-1-2 overall.

Parks had a nine save evening between the pipes in her first-career start to anchor a Demon Deacon defense that shutout Notre Dame 1-0 in South Bend. Wake Forest improves to 2-4-1 overall with a 2-3-1 mark in ACC play.
