College Soccer News National Team Of The Week - Week Ending September 14, 2014

Jamie Dubyoski - Junior - Forward - Navy  Dubyoski continues to make big plays for the Mids.  He scored the game-winning goal off a double assist from Derek Vogel and Brock Dubley in Navy's 2-1 win over highly regarded Maryland. He also drove a header into the back of the net in Navy's 3-1 win over CCSU and assisted on teammate Daniel Camuti's goal. The Mids improve to  3-1-1. 
Mason Robertson - Sophomore - Forward - Washington Robertson was at the heart of Washington's offense scoring twice in their 3 -1 win over UConn. HIs first goal came after he made a picture perfect move off the dribble to create the space he needed to drive a shot into the back of the frame. His second goal came out of a header after receiving a well played ball from Cristian Roldan.  He also assisted on one of teammate Darwin Jones' two goals in Washington's 3-1 win over Pennsylvania.   
Stefano Bonomo - Senior - Forward - California  Bonomo netted a hat trick and contributed an assist to lead the Golden Bears past Cleveland State 6-1.  California also topped Gonzaga 1-0 with freshman forward Jose Carrera-Garcia scoring the lone goal in the contest.  The Golden Bears have now won three straight after losing their season opener to improve to 3-1-0. 
Austin Meyer - RS Senior - Midfielder - Stanford  Meyer was a catalyst on the offensive side of the ball in Stanford's 4-1 thumping of UC Santa Barbara.  His services out of set pieces played a part in three of the four Cardinal goals. Jeremy Gunn stated, "He's (Meyer) been working hard at it.  We had some fantastic deliveries tonight. Stanford improves to 3-1-0 year to date.  
Joe Dipre - Junior - Midfielder - Delaware Dipre netted what proved to be the game-winning goal when he drove a shot from thirty yards out that sailed just under the crossbar to give the Blue Hens a 3-2 come from behind win over Seton Hall.  He also netted the game-winning goal from fifteen yards with an assist from Nick DiRienzo to help power Delaware past St. Peter's 2-1.  The Blue Hens are 6-0-0.  
Devonte Small - Sophomore - Midfielder - Oregon State Small had a productive weekend of play in the Hensor/Zaher Nike Classic in Corvallis, Oregon. He netted the lone goal in Oregon State's 1-0 win over Siena with a double assist coming from Zach Striar and Khiry Shelton. He also alertly controlled a loose ball in the box and sent it into the back of the frame to help the Beavers top Duquesne 2-1 to up their record to 5-1-0.     
Garrett Halfhill - Senior - Midfielder - Xavier  Halfhill scored twice to help Xavier secure a 3-0 victory over crosstown rival Cincinnati 3-0 before a crowd of 2,178 fans at the XU Soccer Complex. Halfhill netted his first score with assists from Alex Ridsdale and Kyle Martin.  His second goal was a header out of a corner kick with a double assist from Will Walker and Martin.  Xavier has won three straight to improve to 3-2-0.   
Biko Bradnock-Brennan - Junior - Defender - Charlotte  Bradnock-Brennan, who is from Cork, Ireland, ancored a very effective and well organized Charlotte defense that recorded on the road shutouts against UNCG 2-0 and Winthrop 3-0. Bradnock-Brennan and 49er goalkeeper Austin Pack are a big part of a Charlotte defense that has allowed a total of only three goals to date. The 49ers improve to 3-1-0.   
Tyler David - Junior - Defender - Saint Louis  David's first career goal at Saint Louis was a big one.  His header out of a corner kick put in play by junior Marco Heskamp gave the Billikens the edge they needed to upset Louisville 1-0. David and fellow defender Anthony Manning were also part of a solid Saint Louis effort on both sides of the ball that resulted in a 3-1 win over Evansville.  The Billikens improve to 4-1-0.  
Liam Doyle - Junior - Defender - Ohio State Doyle was a difference maker for the Buckeyes on both sides of the ball in their 2-0 shutout win over Northwestern. Doyle converted a penalty kick and was a key part of a very well organized and solid Ohio State backline.  John Bluem stated, "We have a solid back four and Liam Doyle is a remendous player for us.  He has been the achor since he's arrived here and today we rallied around him."  The win was the first regular season win for Ohio State over Northwestern since the 2005 sesaon. 
Nico Campbell - Sophomore - Goalkeeper - Valparaiso  Campell and his Crusader teammates picked up two solid wins this week. Campbell had a nine save evening in Valpo's 2-1 win in overtime agains Butler.  He also anchored a very solid Crusader defensive effort to play a key role in Valpo's on the road 1-0 upset win over Michigan State.  The win over the Spartans was Valpo's first ever win against a top ten ranked opponent.  
Callum Irving - Junior - Goalkeeper - Kentucky  Irving came up big for Kentucky making seven saves including several prime time stops that put his team in the position to upset Notre Dame 1-0 with freshman Stefan Stojkovic's contributing the game winning goal with just 25 ticks remaining in regulation. Irving also anchored a Kentucky defense that recorded a 2-0 shutout win over a good ETSU team. Kentucky gains a ton of momentum as they improve their record to 3-2-0. 


College Soccer News National Team Of The Week - Week Ending September 7, 2014

Reilly Maw - Sophomore - Forward - William and Mary  Maw placed a header into the lower left corner of the goal out of a corner kick and placed a shot into the upper ninety from the top of the box to lead the Tribe past Pittsburgh 4-0.  He also contributed an assist on both of the goals scored by teammate senior midfielder Chris Albiston.  William and Mary improves to 2-2-0.   
Andy Craven - Senior - Forward - North Carolina   Craven has returned to the pitch for the Tar Heels this year after missing the 2013 season due to injury and has hit the ground running. This week he alertly controlled the rebound of his own shot and sent it into the back of the net to give the Tar Heels the edge they needed to top a very good Old Dominion side.  He also scored unassisted to enable UNC to top an always tough VCU team 1-0. North Carolina improves to 3-1-0.  
Lewis Hawke - Sophomore - Forward - Furman  Hawke settled a ball played in out of a corner and drilled it into the back of the net in the 99th minute of play to give Furman a 2-1 win over North Florida.  He also scored in Furman's 5-0 win over Georgia State.  For his efforts he was named the MVP of the Gray Griffin Memorial Tournament.  The Paladins improve to 3-1-0,  
Sagi Lev-Ari - Senior - Forward - CSUN  Lev-Ari continues to be a force on the offensive side of the ball for the Matadors who picked up wins this week over UAB 2-0 and Tulsa 2-1 in overtime.  He scored off a throw-in from six yards out in the match with UAB and drove in the game winning goal in the 92nd minute in the contest with Tulsa.  Lev-Ari now has thrity-five career goals for the Matadors who improve to 2-2-0.  
David Olsen - Freshman -  Forward - San Diego State     Olsen converted a clutch penalty kick in the 87th minute of play to give the Aztec's a 2-1 win over Clemson.  He also scored twice including the game winning goal off an assist from Forrayah Bass to lead the Aztecs past Denver 4-3.  SDSU has now won three straight to improve to 3-1-0.  
Fredrik Borenstein - Freshman - Midfielder - Duquesne  Borenstein, who hails from Gjettum, Norway, had a productive weekend of play for the Dukes.  He collected a rebound out of a corner kick and returned it into the back of the net to help Duquesne top Binghamton 3-2 in the opening day of the Duquesne invitational. He also netted the game winning goal in the 105th minute of play to give Duquesne the edge they needed to top a good Bowling Green team 1-0.  
Wuilito Fernandes - Sophomore - Midfielder - UMass Lowell  Fernandes converted a header out of a corner kick served in by teammate Carlos Ruiz to help the River Hawks top St. Francis Brooklyn 3-1.  He also drove a shot into the far corner of the goal from the top of the box to lead UMass Lowell to a 2-0 win over LaSalle.  He was named the MVP of the Morgan Stanley Windjammer Classic.  The River Hawks improve to 2-2-0. 
Mahamoudou Kaba - Senior - Defender - South Carolina  The Gamecock center back converted a penalty kick and anchored a tough South Carolina defense along with backs Braeden Troyer, Reid Grayson, and Ive Burnett and goalkeeper Marco Velez that shutout Mercer 2-0.  South Carolina begins the season at 3-0-0 for the first time since the 2004 campaign. 
Conor Osborne - Senior - Defender - American   Osborne was productive on both sides of the ball as American made their presence known at the Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque.  The Eagles upset UCLA 2-1 on sophomore forward Dale Ludwig's golden goal in overtime and topped UC Riverside 1-0 with Michael Cherry netting the game winner and Osborne providing the assist.  American is now 3-1-0.  
John Pothast - RS Sophomore - Defender - Marquette  The Marquette center back was as key part of a very solid Golden Eagle defensive effort that enabled Marquette to shutout Gonzaga 2-0 and to shutout Oregon State 1-0.  He contributed an assist on Alex McBride's goal in the contest with Gonzaga. The Golden Eagles bounce back to secure two wins to improve to 2-2-0.   
Alex Bono - Junior - Goalkeeper - Syracuse  Bono continues to be a difference maker between the pipes for Syracuse.  He anchors an Orange defense that has recorded four shutouts to date.  This week the Orange topped Rutgers 1-0 and St. John's 1-0 to improve to 4-0-0.  Ian McIntyre stated, "He's (Bono) really that calming presence for us, it's nice to know that when we need him, he'll make the fantistic save and he's done that the past two games."

College Soccer News National Team Of The Week - Week Ending August 31, 2014

Eric Kronenberg - Sophomore - Forward - Denver  Kronenberg played a key role in two big season opening wins for Denver. He skillfully redirected a pass received from teammate Ryan Dodson to send it into the upper left portion of the frame in Denver's 2-0 win over CSUN.  In Denver's 2-1 win over Navy he utilized his left foot to drive a shot into the back of the net from the top of the box in overtime.   
Darwin Jones - Senior - Forward - Washington  Jones was at the center of a pressure packed Washington offense that dominated Gonzaga 4-0 on he road.  He converted two penalty kicks while giving notice that he and his teammates are going to be a difficult force to contend with.  A good crowd should be on hand at Husky Soccer Field when Washington hosts Seattle U. on Thursday. 
Salvador Bernal - Senior - Forward - UNLV Bernal had an outstanding evening to lead UNLV to 4-3 come from behind win over a good Bradley team.  He netted a hat trick and contributed the assist out of a corner kick on defender Kyle Mellies' game winning goal.  UNLV also topped Western Illinios to begin the season with two wins for the first time since 2008.    
Joao Ramalho - Redshirt Sophomore - Forward - ETSU Ramalho was a dynamo on both sides of the ball helping ETSU pick up excellent season opening wins over William and Mary 3-2 and VCU 2-1 in the VCU Invitational in Richmond.  He scored twice in both contests capping off a great season opening weekend for the Bucs and their new head coach Bo Oshoniyi.   
Connor Maloney - Sophomore - Forward - Penn State  Maloney scored the lone goal off an assist from sophomore Mark Wadid to give Penn State the edge they needed to top Oakland 1-0.  He also scored twice to lead the Nittany Lions past St. John's 3-0.  Bob Warming stated, "Connor was just great, not just his two goals, but his run and dummy unselfish run gave Mikey (Minutillo) his goal.  
Ricky Garbanzo - Senior - Midfielder - Coastal Carolina  Garbanzo was at the heart of a Coastal Carolina rally that enabled the Chanticleers to come from two goals down on the road to stun Connecticut 3-2.  He assisted on the goals scored by teammates Oliver Guequen and Louis Dargent and headed in the game winning goal after receiving a cross from freshman defender Elis Bjornsson.   
Michael Salazar - Redshirt Juior - Midfielder - UC Riverside Salazar, who is from Cayo, Belize, netted a hat trick and contributed an assist on teammate Johnny Tovar's goal to power the Highlanders to a 5-1 victory over Pacific in their 2014 season opener.  UC Riverside now travels to Albuquerque to where they will square off with New Mexico and American in the Lobo Invitational.  
  Ryan Zinkhan - Senior - Midfielder - Virginia   The Cavalier midfielder from Fredericksburg fired a low shot just inside the post from twenty yards out in overtime to give Virginia a 1-0 win over Old Dominion. Credit senior midfielder Eric Bird with a nice assist on the play.  Virginia now travels to Oklahoma to face Tulsa and UAB this weekend.   
Ian Svantesson - Junior - Defender - UAB  Svantesso has been a rock solid member of the Blazer  backline since arriving on campus.  He had a productive weekend of soccer helping UAB secure season opening wins over Memphis 3-1 and Mercer 2-1. He contributed the third goal in the win over Memphis and netted the game winner in the 86th minute in the match with Mercer. 
Jordan Murrell - Senior - Defender - Syracuse  Murrell was part of a Syracuse defense that shutout Niagara 3-0 and St. Mary's (Calif.) 3-0 to with the inaugural Central New York Soccer Classic.  He contributed the assist on teammate Louis Cross' goal in the game with Niagara and scored a goal out of a free kick in the match with St. Mary's and was named the Defensive MVP of the Tourney.
Ryan Keener - Senior - Defender - Michigan State  The Spartan center back and captain anchored a solid Michigan State defense that recored shutouts over SMU 1-0 and Florida International 3-0.  His header out of a corner kick played in by midfielder Jason Stacy gave Michigan State the edge on the offensive side of the ball that they needed in the win over SMU.   
Connor Sparrow - Junior - Goalkeeper - Creighton Sparrow anchored a solid Creighton defense that recorded a 2-0 shutout over Stanford and a 1-0 shutout over Santa Clara.  He had three saves in the match with Stanford and five saves in the contest with Santa Clara to open the season with two clean sheets. Creighton will seek to extend their winning streak when they host Western Illinois Friday night.  


College Soccer News National Team Of The Week - Week Ending December 1, 2013

Patrick Mullins - Senior - Forward - Maryland

Mullins was again at the heart of the Maryland attack netting what proved to be the game-winning goal after teammate Tsubasa Endoh set the score up with a nice move and well played cross.  The goal was Mullins' sixteenth so far this year and gave the Terps a 1-0 win over UC Irvine. 

Adam Montaque - Junior - Forward - Michigan State 

Montaque came off the pine to place a left-footed shot into the upper left-hand corner of the goal after receiving a cross from sophomore midfielder Jay Chapman.  The goal was Montaque's fifth of the season and gave the Spartans the edge they needed to upset Georgetown 1-0. 

Michael Gamble - Sophomore - Forward - Wake Forest

Gamble contributed a goal and an assist in Wake Forest's 4-2 loss to Notre Dame.  Sean Okoli provided the helper on Gamble's goal while Gamble contributed the assist on teammmate Tolani Ibikunle's score. The Demon Deacons conclude the season with a 10-6-5 record.   

Cyle Larin - Freshman - Midfielder - Connecticut 

Larin scored twice to help Connecticut come from behind to top number one seeded UCLA in a match that required penalty kicks to determine who advanced.  Larin placed a deflection of teammate Allando Matheson's shot in the back of the net and also placed a deflection in the goal coming after a free kick into the box. 

Alec Sundly - Senior - Midfielder - California 

Sundly's hustle once again resulted in a key play for the Golden Bears. He made a nice back post run to be at the right place at the right time in order to take advantage of the opportunity to place the rebound of teammate Omid Jalali's shot into the back of the net. California topped Coastal Carolina 1-0 to advance to the Elite Eight.  

Michael Calderon - Senior - Midfielder - New Mexico

Calderon makes good things happen for the Lobos.  This week he assisted on the goals scored by teammates defender Riley McGovern and midfielder Oniel Fisher to play a key role in New Mexico's 2-0 win over Penn State. The Lobos advance to the Elite Eight to face Washington. 

Patrick Hodan - Sophomore - Midfielder - Notre Dame 

Hodan received a pass out of a short corner kick and created enough space off the dribble to fire a shot into the back of the net in Notre Dame's 4-2 win over Wake Forest. He has now scored a goal in four consecutive contests.  The Irish improve to 14-1-6 and advance to the Elite Eight.  

Kevin Cope - RS Senior - Defender - Michigan State

The Spartan captain and center back was part of a solid Michigan State defensive effort that shutout a very talented Georgetown team 1-0. Cope joined backs Rylan Thelen and Wesley Curtis and goalkeeper Zach Bennett to keep the Hoyas attack in check.    

Scott Thomsen - Sophomore - Defender - Virginia 

Thomsen drilled a shot into the upper 90 out of a free kick from 24 yards out to get the Cavaliers on the board and to start the momentum that carried Virginia to a 3-1 win over Marquette. He joined backs Zach Carroll, Kyler Sullivan, and Kevin McBride and keeper Calle Brown as part of a determined Cavalier defensive effort.    

Michael Harris - Senior - Defender - Washington

There is no doubt about the fact that Harris' flip throw has been a valuable addition to the Washington offense. This week he utilized it to send a throw-in into the six yard box which teammate Ian Lange was able to head into the back of the net to give the Huskies a 1-0 win over Stanford. Harris has a total of ten assists so far this year. 

Zack Steffen - Freshman - Goalkeeper - Maryland 

Steffen came up big for the Terps recording five saves including several game-saving stops to anchor a stout Maryland defense that shutout a very good U.C. Irvine team 1-0 to advance to the Elite Eight where they will face number four seeded California
