College Soccer News National Team Of The Week - Week Ending October 12, 2014

Maid Memic - Senior - Forward - Hofstra  Memic converted a penalty kick to give Hofstra a 1-0 win over Wake Forest in Winston Salem.  He also netted what proved to be the game winning goal when he placed a shot into the top-right corner of the goal in Hofstra's 3-1 win over William and Mary. Hofstra snapped an eight-game winnless streak in the series with the Tribe to up thier record to 7-3-2 with a 2-0-0 mark in CAA play.  
Andy Craven - Senior - Forward - North Carolina Craven converted a header from six yards out with a double assist from Tyler Engel and Verneri Valimaa in UNC's 3-0 win over Campbell.  He also scored twice to power the Tar Heel attack in a 5-0 win over ACC foe Virginia Tech.  Craven has now scored seven goals to date including five game winners.  North Carolina ups their record to 8-4-0.     
Rory Knibbs - Sophomore - Forward - San Jose State Knibbs drove a shot just inside the left post from fifteen yards out and converted a header at close range with an assist from Frankie Beauchamp to help the Spartans top Air Force 5 to 1.  He also scored the lone goal of the evening for the Spartans in their 1-1 tie with UMKC when he controlled a deflection and placed it in the back of the net from fourteen yards out.  
Danny Musovski - Freshman - Forward - UNLV Musovski is among the reasons why UNLV is off to an 9-2-1 record with a perfect 3-0-0 mark in WAC play.  He headed in a free kick put in play by Julian Portugal and scored out of a breakaway to help propel the Rebels past Seattle 3-1.  UNLV also topped Utah Valley 1-0 with senior Salvador Bernal converting a penalty kick to secure the win. 
Asani Samuels - Senior - Forward - Canisius College Samuels helped the Griffs secure two solid wins in MAAC play.  He contributed a goal and an assist along with Nicolo Baudo on teammate Derek Maier's goal in Canisius' 4-1 win over Rider.  Samuels scored his sixth goal of the year out of a counter attack after receiving a cross from Pat Conlon in Canisius' 2-0 victory over Iona. The Griffs improve to 7-3-2 with a 2-1-1 mark in MAAC play.  
Mael Corboz - Junior - Midfielder - Maryland Corboz came through in the clutch for the Terps converting a penalty kick which proved to be the difference maker in Maryland's 1-0 win over an always tough VCU team and he scored twice to help power the Terps past highly regarded Penn State 4-0. His first goal against the Nittany Lions was from twenty-five yards out with an assist from teammate Mikey Ambrose.  His second score was out of a penalty kick. Maryland is now 5-5-2 overall with a 2-1-1 mark in Big Ten play. .   
Colin McAtee - RS Junior - Midfielder - Michigan McAtee was a scoring machine in Michigan's 3-2 win over Notre Dame.  He converted a header out of a corner, drove a shot into the lower right corner from the top of the eighteen, and netted the game-winning goal when he converted another header out of a corner kick. He also contriubuted a goal from the top of the box in Michigan's 3-0 win over Rutgers.   
Joseph Greenspan - Senior - Defender - Navy  The Navy center back anchored a very tenacious backline that shutout American 2-0 and Colgate 2-0.  The Mids secured two impressive wins to up their record to 7-4-2 with a 3-1-0 mark in Patriot League play. Greenspan is an iron man who continues to do the things he needs to do to help his team secure wins.    
Tyler Hilliard - RS Junior - Defender - Syracuse  Hilliard scored twice out of free kicks served in by teammate Jordan Murrell to help the Orange secure a 3-1 win over Wake Forest in ACC play.  In both goals Murrell sent a ball into the back post that Hilliard decisively drove into the goal. Syracuse also topped Albany 2-1.  The Orange are now 11-1-0 with a 4-1-0 mark in conference play.  
Bjarki Aoalsteinsson - Junior - Defender - James Madison  Aoalsteinsson is a lock down defemder.   This week he was at the heart of a stout James Madison defense that shutout Delaware 1-0 on the road and tied UNCW 1-1 at home in Colonial Athletic Association action. The Dukes improve to 5-4-3 overall with a 1-0-1 mark in conference play.  
Calle Brown - RS Senior - Goalkeeper - Virginia  Brown was solid between the pipes for the Cavaliers.  He had five saves to record the shutout in goal in Virginia's 1-0 win on the road over George Mason.  He also was superb between the pipes in Virginia's 1-0 win over Duke. Virginia recorded its fourth straight victory and third consecutive shutout to improve to 8-3-1 with a 3-1-1 mark in ACC play. 

College Soccer News National Team Of The Week - Week Ending October 5, 2014

Emil Ekblom - Sophomore - Forward - Syracuse  Ekblom continues to come up with big plays for the Orange.  He decisively placed a header into the top right corner of the net in overtime after receiving a cross from Oyvind Alseth to give Syracuse the edge they needed to secure a hard fought 1-0 on the road win over Virginia Tech. The goal was Ekblom's sixth of the season and fifth game winner.  Syracuse is 9-1-0.   
Darwin Jones - Senior - Forward - Washington Jones makes good things happen.  He scored out of a free kick from 28 yards out and slotted a shot into the back of the frame from the top of the box after receiving a through ball from Ian Lange in Washington's 3-2 win over California. He also took advantage of a turnover in the box which he one-touched into the goal in Washington's 3-1 win over Stanford. The Huskies improve to 9-1-0 overall with a 2-0-0 mark in Pac-12 Play.  
Darius Madison - Junior - Forward - Virginia  Madison helped the Cavaliers get back on track this week.  He placed a rebound into the back of the net from close range and drove a header into the net after receiving a cross from Eric Bird in Virginia's 2-1 come from behind win over James Madison.  He also controlled a rebound of his own shot and sent it into the net to help the Cavaliers top Pittsburgh 3-0 in ACC play. Virginia is 6-3-1 overall. 
Tyler Blackwood - Senior - Forward - South Florida  Blackwood, who transferred to USF from the University of Tampa, netted his first career goal at USF and contriubuted an assist to help the Bulls top Georgia Southern 3-0.  He followed that performance with a hat trick to power the Bulls past Temple 3-0.  South Florida is now 6-3-0 with a 2-0-0 mark in American Athletic Conference action.  
Nick DePuy - Sophomore - Forward - UC Santa Barbara DePuy played a key role in two solid UCSB Big West Conference wins.  He netted the game winning goal and contriubuted an assist on teammate Duncan Backus's goal to help the Gauchos top CSUN 2-1.  He also came up big for UCSB when with less than a minute remaining in regulation he drove a shot into the back of the net from 35 yards out to propel the Gauchos past UC Irvine 1-0. 
Khiry Shelton - Senior - Midfielder - Oregon State In one of the more unusual games of the 2014 season to date, Shelton netted a hat trick as well as teammate Timmy Mueller as Oregon State displayed a lot of determination and talent in topping California 6-2.  Shelton netted his first goal of the evening after receiving a through ball from Mueller.  Shelton also contributed the assist on Mueller's first goal of the evening.  Oregon State rebounds after a 1-0 loss to Stanford on Thursday to improve to 8-3-0. 
Yianni Sarris - Senior - Midfielder - Ohio State An opportunistic Sarris helped the Buckeyes get back on the winning side of the ledger. He scored from the top of the box netting the lone goal of the evening to give Ohio State a 1-0 win over highly regarded Louisville.  He also alertly took advantage of a turnover in the box to contribute a goal in the Buckeyes solid 3-2 win in Big Ten Conference play over Michigan State. Ohio State gains momentum and improves to 4-3-3.
Matt Danilack - Freshman - Midfielder - Dartmouth Danilack helped the Big Green secure wins over Vermont 2-1 and Princeton 2-1.  He scored in the win over Vermont and converted a header out of a free kick in overtime in the victory over Princeton. Dartmouth improves to 5-2-1 overall and is 1-0-0 in Ivy Legue action.  
Cole Missimo - Junior - Midfielder - Northwestern  Missimo had a one goal and two-assist game to help the Wildcats top Maryland 3-2 in overtime. Missimo netted the golden goal in overtime with a double assist from Joey Calistri and Brandon Medina.  He also assisted on the goals scored by teammates Henry Herrill and Calistri. Northwestern is now 5-1-4 overall with a 1-1-2 mark in Big Ten play.   
Daniel Grundei - Senior - Defender - Hofstra  Grundei was solid on both sides of the ball helping Hofstra top Binghamton 1-0 and Elon 2-0 to up their record to 5-3-2.  Grundei decisively controlled a rebound and then sent it into the back of the net to provide the lone goal in the win over Binghamton.  He also was part of a solid Hofstra defensive showing in both contests.  
Craig Nitti - RS Senior - Defender - LMU Nitti had a very productive weekend of play. The LMU center back converted a penalty kick to net the lone score for the Lions in their 1-1 tie with Santa Clara.  He also placed a shot into the top right corner of the goal out of a free kick from twenty-five yards out to help LMU secure a 3-1 win over San Francisco.  LMU improves to 4-3-3 overall.  
Charlie Lyon - RS Senior - Goalkeeper - Marquette Lyon anchors a tenacious Marquette defense that shutout Wisconsin 2-0 and tied highly regarded Georgetown 0-0 on the road to extend their program-record shutout streak to seven games.  Lyon was credited with three saves in the win over Wisconsin and five saves in the contest with Georgetown.  Lyon has not allowed a goal in 718:39 minutes of play.  The Golden Eagles are 6-2-1.   

 

College Soccer News National Team Of The Week - Week Ending September 28, 2014

Ricardo Velazco - Junior - Forward - Louisville Velazco is a playmaker.  He skillfully placed a shot just inside the left post from ten yards out and assisted on Tim Kubel's game-winner to play a key role in Louisville's 2-1 on the road win over in-state rival Kentucky.  He also found the back of the net twice to help the Cardinals top ACC foe Pittsburgh 4-1.  Louisville has now won four straight to improve to 5-1-1.   
Brandon Allen - Junior - Forward - Georgetown Allen netted two second half goals to propel the Blue and Gray past Butler 2-0 in a Big East Conference match-up.  Allen's first goal came out of a penalty kick after he was fouled in the box. He netted the insurance goal out of a coutner attack with a nice assist from sophomore forward Alex Muyl.  Georgetown is 5-1-3 with a 1-0-0 mark in Big East play.  
Kieran Roberts - Freshman - Forward - Radford  Roberts had a very productive week of play.  He drove a header into the back of the net out of a set piece in the 97th minute of play to propel Radford past Appalachian State 1-0 in overtime. Freshman Fraser Colmer contributed the assist. Roberts also netted a hat trick to help power the Highlanders past Presbyterian 6-1 in a Big South Conference contest.  
Conor Maloney - Sophomore - Forward - Penn State  Maloney continues to make things happen on he offensive side of the ball for the Nittany Lions. He scored twice to lead Penn State past the Pen Quakers 6-2 and contributed the assist on teammate Brandon Savino's goal.  He also scored the lone goal in Penn State's Big Ten Conference win over Michigan.  Maloney has now found the back of the net seven times so far this season. Penn State improves to 8-0-1.   
Alan Reiter - Senior - Midfielder - Davidson Reiter sent a one-timer into the lower left corner of the net from eighteen yards out after receiving a well played ball from Maxi Pragnell in Davidson's 2-1 win over Virginia. He also decisively placed a header into the top left corner of the frame out of a corner kick served in by teammate Luke Blades to help the Wildcats top Campbell 3-1 to improve to 5-0-2. Davidson is off to its best start since 1982.  
Zev Taublieb - Senior - Midfielder - Valparaiso  The Crusader captain's first goal of the 2014 campaign was a big one. Taublieb alertly controlled a rebound and then redirected it into the back of the net in overtime to give Valpo the edge they needed to top Loyola 1-0.  He repeated that feat scoring Valpo's first goal in ther 2-1 win over Belmont in a Horizon League contest.  The Brown and Gold improve to 5-1-2 overall and are 1-0-0 in conference play.  
Magnus Thorsson - Junior - Midfielder - Winthrop Thorsson, who hails from Reykavik, Iceland, scored twice to lead the Eagles past a good ETSU team 4-2.  He also drove a header into the back of the net out of a corner kick served in by teammate Pol Sole to help Winthrop top Liberty 2-0.  The Eagles have won four straight to improve to 7-2-0.  
Drew Murphy - Sophomore - Defender - UC Santa Barbara Murphy was a factor on both sides of the ball in UCSB's 1-0 win over San Diego State and 4-1 win over Drake.  He assisted on Nick DePuy's game winner in the contest with San Diego State and contributed a goal and an assist in the win over Drake.  Freshman forward Ludwig Ahl also scored twice in the match with Drake. The Gauchos are now 4-3-1.    
Devin Morgan - Senior - Defender - Cornell   Morgan converted a picture perfect header coming out of a corner kick with teammate Conor Goepel alertly contributing the assist when he controlled a clearance and sent it back into the box.  The goal proved to be the difference in the Big Red's 1-0 win over Hartwick.  Morgan also produced what proved to be the game winning goal in Cornell's 5-0 thumping of Buffalo. Cornell is now 6-2-1 overall. 
Jacob VanCompernolle - Senior - Defender - UNCW The senior back from Dallas, Texas converted a header out of a corner kick put in play by senior midfielder Mateo Cardona and utilized his left foot to drive a shot into the right far post with an assist from Brayden Smith to give the Seahawks the edge they needed to top Duke 2-1. UNCW also defeated William and Mary on the road 1-0 with Cardona netting the game winner to up their record to 7-1-1.  
Patrick Wall - Graduate Student - Goalkeeper - Notre Dame The Irish netminder was rock solid in goal in Notre Dame's 2-0 win over highly regarded North Carolina.  He had six saves including several that fell within the exceptional category.  Bobby Clark stated, "Pat Wall does it every week.  He's like an extra coach in your back four."  Clark added, "There's no question he's one of the reasons we won the game against North Carolina.  He's a game-changer and that's what a good goalkeeper is about."  Notre Dame improves to 4-1-2.  

 

College Soccer News National Team Of The Week - Week Ending September 21, 2014

 Dominique Badji - Senior - Forward - Boston University  Badji drove a shot into the back of the goal after receiving a well played cross from teammate junior Richie Robinson and also provided the helper on freshman midfielder David Amirani's game winning goal to help propel Boston University past Northeastern 2-1.  He also scored twice to power the Terrier attack in their 2-2 tie with Princeton.  
Pat Flynn - Sophomore - Forward - Bowling Green  Flynn continues to come up with big plays for the Falcons.  His tenth goal of the year gave Bowling Green the edge they needed to top Michigan 1-0 in Ann Arbor. He followed that up with a two goal evening that included the game winner to lead BGSU past Eastern Illinois University 3-1 at Cochrane Field. The Falcons are 6-1-0 and have already matched their win total for the 2013 season.    
Som Essome - Sophomore - Forward - Virginia Tech  Essome was the catalyst on the offensvie side of the ball for the Hokies in their 2-0 win over Wake Forest.  He contributed the assists on the goals scored by Ricardo John and Niels Kirch.  The win was Virginia Tech's first over Wake Forest since joining the ACC. The Hokies also secured a 1-0 non-conference win over UNCG and are now 4-3-1 overall. 
Ethan Kutler - Sophomore - Midfielder - Colgate  Kutler had a five goal weekend.  He scored twice to help power Colgate to a 3-1 win over Fairleigh Dickinson and notched a hat trick to lead the Raiders to a 3-1 victory over a very solid Siena team. Kutler has found the back of the net nine times so far this season.  Colgate improves to 3-3-1.  
Sean Davis - Senior - Midfielder - Duke Davis cureld a shot into the left side of the net out of a free kick from twenty-five yards out and assisted on freshman Cameron Moseley's game winner in Duke's 2-1 win over arch rival North Carolina before a full house at Koskinen Staduim in Durham.  
Leo Stolz - Senior - Midfielder - UCLA  Stolz skillfully controlled the ball then deftly placed a shot into the bottom left corner of the net from the 18 yard box to give the Bruins the edge they needed to top UC Santa Barbara at Harder Stadium in Santa Barbara.  The goal was Stoltz's third of the season to date. 
Jamie Dell - Senior - Midfielder - UNCW  Dell took advantage of the scoring opportunities that came his way finding the back of the net twice including the game winning goal in overtime to lead the Seahawks past ODU 2-1.  His first goal came out of a long throw in put in play by Jacob VanCompernolle.  Michael Mecham provided the assist on the game winner. UNCW also topped Campbell 1-0 with Colin Bonner netting the game winner. 
Zach Carroll - Junior - Defender - Michigan State  Carroll anchored a very solid and resilient Michigan State backline that shutout Maryland 1-0 in College Park in the 2014 Big Ten opener for both schools.   Jason Stacy netted the lone goal in the contest. The Spartan defense led by netminder Zach Bennett has now recorded five shutouts so far this year. The Spartans are now 4-1-1 overall.  
Marko Drljic - Senior - Defender - NJIT  Drljic and his NJIT teammates had a productive week topping LIU-Brooklyn 3-1 and upsetting nationally ranked Navy 1-0 to improve to 4-2-1.  Drljic alertly redireted a rebound of his own shot into the back of the net and assisted on teammate Jimmy Myers' goal in the win over LIU-Brooklyn. He also contributed the assist on Joshua Mercer's game winning goal in the win over Navy.  
Jack Alberts - RS Freshman - Defender - Marquette Alberts was in the right place at the right time for the Golden Eagles this week and came up with two big goals.  He converted a header from six yards out that was served in by sophomore Louis Bennett II in Marquette's 2-0 win over cross town rival Milwaukee before a capacity crowd at Valley Fields.  Alberts and Bennett teamed up again on an almost identical play with Alberts scoring on a header in Marquette's 2-0 win over a good NIU team. 
Callum Irving - Junior - Goalkeeper - Kentucky   Irving had another stellar week in goal for the Wildcats who shutout Xavier 1-0 and played Furman to a 0-0 scoreless tie.  In the contest with Furman, Irving had seven saves including several key stops at close range.  Kentucky has now recorded four straight shutouts and has not been scored upon in 414 minutes of play.
