College Soccer News - National Team Of The Week - Week Ending September 18, 2016

Albert Ruiz - Junior - Forward - FGCU Ruiz netted a hat trick to help power FGCU past UNCW 5-0. His first goal was skillfully placed just inside the left post after receiving a throw in from teammate Preston Kilwien. His second goal came after receiving a long ball over the top from goalkeeper Sawyer Jackman. Ruiz's third strike was a one-timer to the back post from in front of the goal mouth after receiving a pass from teammate Justin Gavin. FGCU also defeated UCF 3-1 on Wednesday night.  After beginining the season with two losses and a tie, the Eagles have now won four straight to improve to 4-2-1. 
Niko Hansen - Senior - Forward - New Mexico Hansen came up big for the Lobos again this week netting a hat trick in their 3-1 win on the road win over UC Irvine. Hansen's first goal came after he made a nice move to create the space he needed to thread a shot into the net at close range. His second goal came after receiving a pass from Simon Spangenberg. Hansen netted his third goal when he controlled the deflection of teammate Sam Gleadle's shot and sent it back into the frame. New Mexico has now won five in a row to improve to 5-2-0 after beginning the season with 1-0 losses to Indiana and Notre Dame. 
David Goldsmith - Senior - Forward - Butler  Goldsmith earns back-to-back spots on the CSN National Team of the Week after finding the back of the net twice including the game-winning goal in overtime to lead the Bulldogs to a 3-2 victory on the road over Big East foe Villanova.  Goldsmith also contributed the helper on teammate Marco Charalambous' goal. Butler improves to 5-0-1 overall with a 1-0-0 mark in conference play.  
Blake Elder - RS Junior - Forward - Denver Elder made the runs he needed to make to be in the right place at the right time to score two crucial goals this week for Denver. He scored the insurance goal with a double assist from teammates Sam Hamilton and Graham Smith in Denver's 2-0 win over Saint Louis. Elder also scored the game winning goal in the eighty-seventh minute of play in Denver's 1-0 win over North Florida. The game-winning goal was set up by a nice combination of passes from Hamilton and Andre Shinyashiki.  Denver coach Jamie Franks stated, "He (Elder) continues to put himself in great spots and he's got the reward he's deserved from that during this homestand."  Denver improves to 7-0-1.
Ezana Kahsay - RS Sophomore - Forward - Akron Kahsay scored the second goal in Akron's 2-0 win over U.C. Santa Barbara when he controlled the deflection of teammate Jonathan Lewis' shot inside the box and drove it back into the net. He also sent a one timer into the back of the net from five yards out after receiving a cross from senior defender Brad Ruhaak in the eighty-eighth minute to give Akron the edge they needed to top Tulsa 2-1 on the road. The Zips have won three straight to improve to 5-2-0, 
Christian Thierjung - Senior - Midfielder - California Thierjung is a playmaker. He converted a penalty kick in California's 2-0 win over Omaha. He then had an unbelievable five goal game to power the Golden Bears past Harvard 6-2 scoring in the 26th, 50th, 57th, 72nd, and 75th minutes. California improves to 3-2-1 overall.  
Jorge Gomez Sanchez - Senior - Midfielder - Temple Sanchez produced a hat trick to lead Temple past Fairfield 4-0. He deftly sloted his first goal of the evening into the back of the net after a combination of passes from teammates Kevin Klett and Joonas Jokinen set up the goal.  Sanchez then alertly placed the rebound of teammate Joonas Jokinen shot into the back of the goal to tally his second goal of the evening. His third goal of the contest came after receiving a cross from freshman midfielder Albert Moreno. Sanchez scored two goals in Temple's 3-2 loss earlier in the week to rival Drexel. Sanchez has scored a total of nine goals to date. The Owls are 5-2-0.  
Chris Ramsell - Senior - Midfielder - High Point University  The senior linkman from Scottsdale, Arizona had a two goal and one assist evening to help High Point University come from two goals down on the road to secure a 4-2 victory over USC Upstate. Ramsell converted a penalty kick and scored out of a corner kick. He also contributed the assist on senior defender Erien Campbell's game-winning goal to play a key role in the win. Ramsell has netted four goals and contributed two helpers to date. The Panthers improve to 5-0-1 overall. 
Brian Iloski - RS Junior - Midfielder - UCLA Iloski has been a difference maker and playmaker for the Bruins. He drew a foul just outside the box with five seconds remaining in regulation in UCLA's contest with UC Santa Barbara and then skillfully and decisively placed a free kick over the Gaucho wall and just under the crossbar to knot the score at 1-1 to send the match into overtime where Jackson Yueill scored to give UCLA a 2-1 win on the road over a very good UC Santa Barbara team. Iloski also contributed the assist on teammate Willie Raygoza's first goal in UCLA's 4-0 thumping of CSUN. The Bruins are now  4-1-1 overall. 
Chase Clack - Junior - Defender - ETSU Clack anchored the center of a rock solid ETSU defense that shutout highly regarded and previously undefeated North Carolina 1-0. Jonny Sutherland had three saves in goal and Fletcher Ekern produced the the game-winner in that contest. Clack also converted a header out of a free kick with an assist from forward Cameron Woodfin to net the lone goal in ETSU's 1-0 shutout victory over UNC-Asheville. ETSU improves to 4-2-0.  
Matej Dekovic - Senior - Defender - Charlotte Dekovic converted a header out of a corner kick served in by Brandt Bronico to give the 49ers the edge they needed to top Coastal Carolina 1-0. He also was a key part of a stout 49er defense that shutout Coastal Carolina as well as Old Dominion 2-0 on the road in a key Conference USA contest. Junior Harrison Steadman netted both of the goals in the win over ODU. The 49ers are off to an impressive 4-0-0 start during which time they have yet to allow an opponent to score. 
Stefan Cleveland - Grad. Student - Goalkeeper - Louisville  The two-time First Team All-Ivy League selection and the 2015 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year had a big week between the pipes for Louisville. He had two saves in goal to anchor a solid defense that shutout Xavier 2-0. He also recorded a three save evening that included a leaping one-handed save to give the Cardinals the edge they needed to top highly regarded Notre Dame 1-0 behind a goal from junior forward Mohamed Thiaw.  Cleveland has anchored a defense that has allowed just two goals in seven contests for a 0.28 goals against average. Louisville is now 5-1-1 overall with a 2-0-0 mark in ACC play. 




College Soccer News - National Team Of The Week - Week Ending September 11, 2016

Zach Wright - Junior - Forward - North Carolina  Wright assited on Walker Hume's goal and one of the two goals scored by Tucker Hume in North Carolina's 3-0 win over VCU. He also tallied the lone goal with an assist from freshman Cam Lindley in the 87th minute of regulation to give the Tar Heels the edge they needed to prevail 1-0 over ACC foe and highly regarded Clemson. UNC improves to 4-0-0.  
David Goldsmith - Senior - Forward - Butler  Goldsmith scored twice and assisted on teammate Mitch Ostrowski's goal to lead the Bulldogs past UC Santa Barbara 4-2. Goldsmith also scored twice to play a key role in Butler's 3-0 win over Oregon State. The Bulldogs improve to 4-0-1 and will try to remain undefeated when they travel to open Big East Conference play with Villanova on September 17.  
Nicco Mastrangelo - Sophomore - Forward - Saint Francis  Mastrangelo converted a header out of a corner kick served in by Stefan Sjekloca in SFU's 3-1 win over Penn State. He also netted the game-winning goal that was set up by an assist from brother Mario Mastrangelo to give the Red Flash the edge they needed to top Niagara  Saint Francis improves to 4-2-0. SFU will face Cornell and Colgate this coming weekend in Ithaca, New York.  
Jeroen Meefout - Junior - Forward - San Diego State Meefout scored from eighteen yards out and from ten yards out to power the Aztecs past UTRGV 3-0. He also netted both of San Diego State's goals in their 2-0 win over Memphis. Meefout accounted for four the the five goals the Aztecs scoed over the weekend. San Diego State is off and running with a 4-0-1 record to date. 
Eddie Sanchez - Senior - Midfielder - Portland  Sanchez played a key role in enabling Portland to rally from two goals down to secure a 2-2 tie with Evansville. Sanchez sent a picture bicycle kick goal into the net in that contest to give the Pilots new life. He also alertly sent the rebound of his own missed penalty kick back into the net in Portland's 3-0 win over Bradley.  The Pilots are 4-1-1 season to date. 
Grant Stoneman - RS Sophomore - Midfielder - Loyola Chicago  Stoneman alertly took control of a turnover in the box and sent it back into the goal to get net Loyola Chicago's first score in their 2-0 win over Utah State. He also contributed what proved to be the game-winning goal in Loyola Chicago's 4-0 win over Binghamton when he sent a cross received from teammate junor Broday Kraussel into the back of he net from fifteen yards out. The Ramblers are 5-0-0 for the first time in the history of the program. 
Wuiito Fernandes - Senior - Midfielder - UMass Lowell UMass Lowell has won five straight to claim the program's longest winning streak as a Division I team. Fernandes scored twice to help power the Riverhawks past Quinnipiac 2-1 on Staturday. In the 53rd minute of play he used his head to redirect a cross served in by Carlos Ruiz into the back of the net. He also placed a shot into the frame from around the top of the box in the 66th minute of the contest with a double assist from teammates Ivan Blaskic and Ivan Abramovic.  
Hayden Partain - Senior - Midfielder - Wake Forest Partain made a nice run to be on the receiving end of a cross from teammate Jon Bakero which Partain deftly placed in the goal in overtime to give Wake Forest a good 1-0 victory over long standing nemesis Virginia in a crucial early season Atlantic Coast Conference contest. After losing their season opener, the Demon Deacons have bounced back to win four straight to improve to 4-1-0.  
Jack Hagstrom - Sophomore - Defender - Brown Hagstrom was part of a very effective Brown defense that helped the Bears secure a 2-1 win in overtime with Georgia State and a 2-0 victory over SMU in the Capital City Classic at Stevenson-Field in Provicence, Rhode Island. Brown improves to 3-0-0 but they have an interesting contest coming up when they travel to face undefeated UMass Lowell on Wednesday, September 14. 
Brandon Aubrey - Senior - Defender - Notre Dame Aubrey continues to play a key role in Notre Dave's success to date. The Irish center back contributes on both sides of the ball. In Notre Dame's 4-1 win over Virginia Tech, he converted a penalty kick, drove a header into the back of the net, and scored out of a free kick from twenty yards out to record a hat trick. The Irish improve to 5-0-0.  
Ryan Baird - Junior - Goalkeeper - Rider  Baird did a very good job of anchoring and organizing a bend but don't break Broncs defense that helped the Broncs claim a 1-0 shutout win over NJIT and a 2-0 shutout win over Temple. Baird had three saves in the contest with NJIT and he had seven saves including a huge stop of a penalty kick in the victory over Temple. Rider improves to 4-0-0.

College Soccer News - National Team Of The Week  

Jon Gallagher - Junior - Forward - Notre Dame  Gallagher played a key role in Notre Dame's 2-1 come from behind win over Stanford and their 5-0 victory over California. He scored from fourteen yards out off a give and go with forward Jeffrey Farina in the 86th minute of play in the contest with Stanford. He scored out of a break away with an assist from goalkeeper Chris Hubbard in the win over California and assisted on the goals scored by teammates Evan Panken and Mark Gormely. The Irish improve to 4-0-0. 
Siggi Benonysson - Freshman- Forward - HPU   Benonysson scored the Panthers' lone goal in their 1-1 tie with Detroit. He also scored in HPU's 4-2 win over St. Bonaventure. Benonysson has been a force on the offensive side of the ball for High Point University scoring a total of four goals and contribuing an assit in three games. The Panthers are off an running with a solid 2-0-1 record to date.  
Skyler Milne - Senior - Forward - Utah Valley  Milne had a total of three goals and an assist in Utah Valley's two wins in the Grand Prairie Classic. He scored twice and contributed an assist in the 4-2 win over Evansville and netted the lone goal in Utah Valley's 1-0 win over Bradley.  The Wolverines improve to 3-0-0 year to date.  
Timmy Mueller - Junior - Forward - Oregon State  Mueller found the back of the net three times for the Beavers to break open a contest with San Jose State that had been scoreless at intermission. Mueller established once again that he is tough for opposing defenders to contain when he has the ball at his feet in the attacking third. The 3-0 win over San Jose State improves Oregon States record to 3-0-0 year to date. 
Mason Robertson - Senior - Forward - Washington Robertson, who missed a large portion of the 2015 season due to injury, helped give the Huskies the offensive firepower they needed to secure a 2-1 win over Saint Mary's (Ca) and a 4-2 victory over Oral Roberts. He converted a header in the tenth minute of play after receiving a cross from junior defender Justin Fiddes in the contest with St. Mary's.  He also scored twice in Washinton's win over Oral Roberts. The Huskies have won two straight games after dropping their season opener. 
Luka Prpa - Freshman - Midfielder - Marquette The freshman midfielder from Wind Lake, Wisconsin has been a force. Prpa had back-to-back two goal and two assist games to play a key role in Marquette's 4-1 win at home over NIU and their 4-1 come from behind win on the road over UIC. Prpa had a hand in all of Marquette's eight goals last week. 
Kevin Feucht - Junior - Midfielder - UC Santa Barbara Feucht came up big once again this week for UC Santa Barbara. He scored the Gaucho's first two goals in their 5-2 win over San Diego. He also contributed the assist on teammate Nick DePuy's game-winning goal in UCSB's 1-0 win over a very competitive St. Mary's (Ca) team. The Gauchos are off to a perfect 4-0-0 start. 
Tucker Stephenson - Sophomore - Midfielder - West Va.   The sophomore linkman from Overland Park, Kansas has been a difference maker for the Mountaineers on the offensive side of the ball. He came off the bench to again score a key goal for West Virginia. Stephenson netted the lone goal of the evening out of a free kick served in by junior midfielder Joey Piatczyc to give the Mountaineers the edge they needed to top Princeton out of the Ivy League 1-0. West Virginia improves to 2-1-0.  
Callum Montgomery - Sophomore - Defender - Charlotte Montgomery was part of a Charlotte defense that recorded two shutouts this week. He also made a contribution on the offensive side of the ball. Montgomery converted a header with an assist from Brandt Bronico to open the scoring for the 49ers in their 5-0 win over Hofstra and scored twice to play a key role in Charlotte's 5-0 win over Rutgers. The 49ers begin the 2016 seaon with two very impressive wins.   
Francesco Tiozzo - Freshman - Defender - Winthrop The Eagle center back anchored back-to-back shutouts for Winthrop as they topped Mercer 2-0 in overtime and Wofford 1-0 in overtime to win the Big South/SoCON Challenge. Tiozzo also netted the golden goal in the 100th minute of play in the 1-0 win over Wofford.  
Robert Moewes - Graduate Student - Goalkeeper - Duke  Moewes joined Duke as a graduate student this year after being named the 2015 America East Goalkeeper of the Year at Binghamton. Moewes had a huge eight save evening between the pipes against UCLA on the road that included several saves a close range. He did all the things he needed to do in goal to give Duke the opportunity to prevail. Junior midfielder Brian White scored in the 88th minute of the contest to give Duke a very solid momentum building 1-0 win over the Bruins. The Blue Devils are 2-0-1.

Bernard Yeboah - Senior - Forward - Vermont Yeboah scored twice to play a key role in Vermont's 3-2 overtime win against a good Cal State Fullerton team. His first goal came when he alertly controlled a loose ball just outside the box and drove it into the left post. Yeboah's second goal was off the right post after receiving a pass from teammate freshman Christopher Watts. Senior Brian Wright netted the game-winning goal for the Catamounts in overtime.
Guillermo Delgado - Senior - Forward - Delaware  Delgado hit the ground running contributing two goals and an assist to power the Delaware attack in a 3-0 season opening win over Bucknell. He also scored the lone goal in the Blue Hens 1-0 win over Forham when he intercepted a pass and placed a shot into the lower right side of the net from ten yards out. Delgado and his teammates will seek to remain in the win column when they tangle with Iona on Wednesday and Villanova on Sunday.  
Marcelo Acuna - Sophomore - Forward - Virginia Tech  Acuna converted a header in double overtime after receiving a cross from Alessandro Mion to give the Hokies a 1-0 upset win over Ohio State to open the 2016 season on a strong note. He also scored what proved to be the game-winning goal from ten yards out after receiving a cross from Andre Thomas in Virginia Tech's 3-0 win over Oakland. The transfer from Houston Baptist has added a different dimension to the Hokie's attack. Virginia Tech will host South Florida on September 2 at Thompson Field.  
Kwame Awuah - Senior - Midfielder - Connecticut  Awuah is a difference maker and playmaker who makes good things happen for Connecticut. What he contributes to the Huskies does not always show up in the statistics but nonetheless he is an impact player. He played a key role in UConn's 3-1 season opening win Friday over Iona and their 2-0 win over Nebraska-Omaha before a crowd of 5,100 at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. Connecticut hosts Louisville next friday in what shapes up to be an exciting contest.  
Tanner Thompson - Senior - Midfielder - Indiana  Thompson and his Indiana teammates had a productive season opening weekend that included a 1-0 win over any always competitive New Mexico team and a good 3-1 win over UC Irvine. Thompson converted a penalty kick to give the Hoosiers the edge they needed to top New Mexico. He also netted what proved to be the game-winning goal in the victory over UC Irvine and contributed the assist on teammate Grant Lillard's goal. The Hoosiers face California and Stanford next weekend tangle next weekend. 
Joseph Holland - Senior - Midfielder - Hofstra  Holland scored twice in a two minute span to give Hofstra the edge they needed to secure a 3-1 win over local rival Stony Brook. Holland's first goal was from a bending ball out of free kick from thirty yards out. His second goal was a well placed header into the lower right corner of the goal from around ten yards out after receiving a nice cross from senior Lerthon Theuma. The Pride have a big test in front of them when they take to the road to face Charlotte Monday night.  
Paul Hoffmeister - Junior - Midfielder - Utah Valley Hoffmeister's two goals gave Utah Valley the edge they needed to top Washington 2-1 in their season opener. Hoffmeister utilized his left foot to score from just inside the box out of a coutner attack that was set up by passes from teammates Gui Leme and Karson Payton. His second goal came when he alertly controlled a loose ball in the box and placed it into the back of the frame. The Wolverines displayed a ton of grit in this one.    
Napo Matsoso - Senior - Midfielder - Kentucky  Matsoso hit the ground running contributing two highlight reel goals and an assist to help power the Wildcats past Marquette 4-0. Both his scores came near the end of the first half of play and gave Kentucky a ton of momentum which they never relinquished. Matsoso drove a shot into the back of the frame from twenty-two yards out after making a nice move off the dribble to create the space and angle he needed. His second goal was a precision strike from the top corner of the box into the far-side of the net. 
Maximilian Schulze-Geisthovel - Sr.- Midfielder - Boston College  Schulze-Geisthovel netted Boston College's first goal with an assist from senior Isaac Normesinu in their 2-0 season opening win over Quinnipiac. He also contributed a goal after receiving a through ball from Normesinu to help power the Eagles to a 3-2 win over Boston University. The senior transfer from St. Leo has made an immediate impact. The Eagles will host Hofstra and Villanova next weekend before beginning ACC play.  
Brandon Aubrey - Senior - Defender - Notre Dame  The Irish central defender was part of a Notre Dame defensive effort that shutout UC Irvine 4-0 and New Mexico 1-0 to win the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament title. Aubrey also contributed on the offensive side of the ball converting a penalty kick in each contest including the goal that proved to be the game-winner in the contest against New Mexico. Things don't get any easier for the Irish who have Stanford and California on their dance card next weekend. 
Brad Ruhaak - Senior - Defender - Akron Ruhaak helped anchor a solid Zip defensive effort that shutout Georgetown 1-0 and Seattle 1-0. He also alertly controlled the deflection of teammate Ezana Kahsay's shot and sent into back into the net in the final minute of regulation to net the game-winning goal in the win over Georgetown. The Zips travel to west coast this weekend to face San Diego State on Friday and UCLA on monday.  
Nick Lima - Senior - Defender - California  The Golden Bears opened the season with a 2-2 tie with St. Mary's (California). They then got in the win column with a 2-1 win in overtime against Penn State. Lima netted both goals in California's come from behind win over a very game Nittany Lion team. His first goal was a blast into the back of the frame from the center of the box with an assist from teammate Ugo Rebeccini. Lima's game-winning goal was a header set up by a pass from senior Trevor Haberkorn.  
Erik Dick - Redshirt Junior - Goalkeeper - Butler Dick is a shot stopper who came up with ten saves to anchor a solid Butler defense in their season opening 0-0 draw on the road against Louisville. Seven of Dick's ten saves came during the first stanza of play.
