College Soccer News National Team Of The Week - Week Ending September 15, 2013

Sagi Lev-Ari - Junior - Forward - Cal State Northridge

Lev-Ari scored twice to lead the Matadors to a 4-1 victory over Central Arkansas.  He also contributed the assist on teammate David Turcios' goal and scored a goal to help Cal State Northridge top highly regarded New Mexico 3-2 in Albuquerque.  The Matadors are off to a 6-0-0 start. 

Mamadee Nyepon - Junior - Forward - High Point  Nyepon provided the spark that the Panthers needed to top UNC Greensboro 3-0 on the road and Navy 2-0 at home.  Nyepon scored twice in the win over UNC Greensboro and scored a goal and contributed the helper on teammate Pat Shelton's goal in the victory over Navy.  High Point improves to 2-3-0.  
Joey Calistri - Sophomore - Forward - Northwestern

Calistri nettted a hat trick to lead Northwestern to a 4-0 win over Green Bay.  It was the first hat trick by a Northwestern player since the 2008 campaign.  He also scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in Northwestern's 2-0 victory over Butler.  The Wildcats improve to 4-1-0. 

Leo Stolz - Junior - Midfielder - UCLA 

Stolz's first goal as a Bruin was a big one.  After receiving a free kick he weaved his way into the box and sent a bullet into the far post to give UCLA the edge they needed to top UCSB 1-0. He also scored at close range and contributed an assist on teammate Brian Iloski's goal via a give and go in UCLA's 3-2 win over San Diego. 

Matt Walker - Senior - Midfielder - Xavier 

Walker scored a goal and assisted on Jalen Brown's score in Xavier's 2-0 win over UC Irvine. He also placed a shot into the left side of the goal and provided the helper on teammate Gino DePaoli's game-winning strike in Xavier's 2-1 win over Kentucky.  Xavier gets back on track and improves to 2-3-0 to date.   

Pedro Ribeiro - Senior - Midfielder - Coastal Carolina

Ribeiro placed a penalty kick in the right side of the net in Coastal Carolina's 3-1 win over South Carolina. He defty used his left foot to place a shot just inside the near post out of a corner kick and scored from eight yards out to help the Chanticleers top UNC Greensboro 4-2 to improve to 3-2-0.

Mark Anthony Gonzalez - Sophomore - Midfielder - Evansville

Gonzalez received a cross from teammate Nate Opperman that he deposited into the back of the net with 34 seconds remaining in the second overtime period to give the Purple Aces a 2-1 win over Saint Louis.  Gonzalez also scored twice to power Evansville to a 3-1 win over Georiga State. The Purple Aces are now 3-2-1.  

Mael Corboz - Sophomore - Midfiedler - Rutgers 

Corboz played a key role in helping the Scarlet Knights secure wins over in-state rival Princeton 3-2 and South Carolina 3-0.  He scored twice in the win over Princeton and contributed the game-winning goal and two assists in the victory over South Carolina.  Corboz has five goals to date and Rutgers is now 3-2-1.  

Dennis Castillo - Sophomore - Defender - VCU

Castillo was solid on both sides of the ball. He headed in the lone goal of the game in VCU's 1-0 win over Akron at FirstEnergy Stadium.  He also provided an assist on teammate Kharlton Belmar's game-winning goal in VCU's 1-0 win over Niagara.  Castillo was named the Offensive MVP of the Akron Tournament.  Teammate Andrew Wells was named the Defensive MVP.  

Magnus Thorsson- Sophomore - Defender  - Winthrop

Thorsson had a productive week helping the Eagles secure a 5-2 win over Stetson and a 2-1 victory over Mercer in the Mercer Classic.  He scored a goal in the win over Stetson and contributed an assist in the contest with Mercer. For his contribution he was named the MVP of the Mercer Classic. Winthrop is 4-0-1.   

Rafael Diaz - RS Senior - Goalkeeper - St. John's

Diaz had a season high six saves to lead a solid Red Storm defense that shutout South Carolina 1-0. Diaz also had five saves and recorded his third consecutive shutout in goal in St. John's 1-0 win over West Virginia.  The Johnnies improve their record to 5-1-0.
