College Soccer News - National Player Of The Week - Providence Forward Julian Gressel - Week Ending November 20, 2016

Julian Gressel Senior Forward Providence

Gressel is a difference maker for the Friars. This week he scored the insurance goal in Providence's first round 2-0 win over Delaware.

He also contributed two goals to help Providence upset number one seed Maryland 5 to 4 in College Park in the second round on the NCAA Tournament. The loss was Maryland's first of the 2016 season. In an improbable finish the Friars scored four unanswered goals in the second half of play to earn the right to advance to the Sweet Sixteen where they will face fellow Big East Conference member Creighton who topped number sixteen seed Kentucky 3 to 2.

Providence improves to 14-6-0. 

Gressel has scored a total of twelve goals so far this year including five game-winners. 


 

College Soccer News - National Player Of The Week - Colgate Forward Ethan Kutler - Week Ending November 13, 2016

Kutler's five goal performance in the Patriot League Tournament established a new Patriot League Tournament record. He scored three times in Colgate's 3-2 win over Army. He contributed another goal in Colgate's 3-1 win over Loyola and netted the lone goal for Colgate in their 1-1 tie at the conclusion of double-overtime with American in the Patriot League Tournament final. Colgate then prevailed 5-4 in a penalty kick shootout to secure the Patriot League Championship and the league's automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.  

The Raiders claim its first Patriot League title since the 2011 campaign and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time.  Colgate will learn their opponent in the NCAA Tournament when the tournament pairings are announced on Monday at 1 p.m. 


 

College Soccer News - National Player Of The Week - Akron Forward Stuart Holthusen - Week Ending November 6 2016

Stuart Holthusen Junior Forward Akron

Holthusen scored twice including the game-winning goal in overtime to lead Akron past Grand Canyou 3-2. He also scored twice to power Akron past Western Michigan 3-0. The Zips improve to 9-5-4 overall with a 1-1-3 record in the Mid-American Conference and secure their 12th straight MAC regular season championship.

Holthusen has recorded five career multi-goal games for Akron. 

The Zips will return to the pitch on Friday, November 11 when they again host Western Michigan in the MAC Tournament. 

 


 

College Soccer News - National Player Of The Week - Indiana Midfielder Tanner Thompson - Week Ending October 30, 2016

Tanner Thompson Senior Midfielder  Indiana University 

Thompson contributed a hat trick scoring three goals in the first stanza of play to lead Indiana to a convincining 5-0 win over Saint Louis. He also came up big when he scored the game-winning goal with just under five minutes remaining in regulation to give the Hoosiers the edge they needed to top a very game Michigan State team 2-1 in a key Big Ten contest.

Thompson is a playmaker who has scored a total of eight goals so far this year and contributed two assists.

Indiana improves to 10-1-6 overall with a 3-0-5 mark in the Big Ten Conference.

The Hoosiers have secured the number two seed in the upcoming Big Ten Conference Tournament and will host number seven seeded Northwestern on Sunday, November 6.
