College Soccer News - National Team Of The Week - Week Ending October 2, 2016

Jon Gallagher - Junior - Forward - Notre Dame  Gallahger continues to play a key role in the Irish attack scoring twice to lead Notre Dame to a 2-0 win over Pitt. Gallagher has tallied a total of eight goals so far this season. Notre Dame improves to 8-1-0 overall with a 3-1-0 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play. 
Albert Ruiz - Junior - Forward - FGCU  In what will no doubt be one of the more unusual contests of the 2016 season, Ruiz exploded for three goals by the 9:02 mark of the contest as FGCU jumped out to what appeared to be an unsurmoutable 5-0 advantage. Rutgers responded with five goals of their own but FGCU added one more and prevailed 6-5. Ruiz has scored a total of eleven goals to date including two hat tricks. FGCU is among the hottest teams in the country having won seven straight to improve to 7-2-1.
Frederick Karman - GS - Forward - St. Mary's (Ca) Karman drove a rebound into the back of the net from close range and controlled a loose ball in the box and drove it into the back of the net in overtime to give the Gaels a 2-1 win over West Virginia in Morgantown. St. Mary's improves to 3-5-3 while West Virgina drops to 6-2-1.  
Frantzdy Pierrot - Junior - Forward - Coastal Carolina Pierrot netted the Chanticleers first goal in their 2-0 on the road win over the College of Charleston. He also scored twice including the game-winner to lead Coastal Carolina in a 3-2 come from behind win over Old Dominion. The Chanticleers gain momentum and imnprove to 4-4-1 overall. 
Ryan Sierakowski - Soph - Forward - Michigan State Sierakowski came up big twice this week for the Spartans netting the game-winning goals in their 1-0 win over Bowling Green and in thier 1-0 win over Ohio State in a Big Ten Conference game. All four of Sierakowski's goals this year have been game-winners. Michigan State improves to 7-2-0 overall with a 3-1-0 mark in conference play.  
Austin Dewing - Sophomore - Forward - Air Force Dewing scored twice to power the Falcons past Houston Baptist University 2-0. He also contributed an assist on teammate Klint Parker's goal in Air Force's 4-2 win over Incarnate Word. Dewing has recorded three two-goal games in Air Force's last five contests. The Falcons are 8-3-0 overall with a 2-0-0 mark in Western Athletic Confernce play. 
Ricky Chavez - Senior - Midfielder - UNCG Chavez placed a shot into the top corner of the net out of a free kick from twenty-five yards out in UNCG's 4-0 win over VMI and found the back of the net in overtime from twenty-five yards out to give the Spartans the edge they needed to top Furman 1-0. UNCG ups their record to 6-2-2 overall with a 2-0-0 mark in Southern Conference action. 
Chris Wehan - RS Senior - Midfielder - New Mexico Wehan scored twice in the first half of play to power the Lobos to a 4-1 win over FIU in a Conference USA contest. New Mexico is now 6-3-0 overall with a 1-1-0 mark in conference play.  
Mike Catalano - Junior - Midfielder - Wisconsin Catalano produced the insurance goal in Wisconsin's 2-0 win over Saint Louis and made a nice move through traffic to send a pass to teammate Sam Brotherton that Brotherton was able to blast into the back of the frame to give the Badgers the advantage they needed to top Rutgers 1-0 in a Big Ten contest.  Wisconsin is now 5-2-1 overall with a 3-1-0 mark in conference action. 
Jordan Wilson - Senior - Defender - Kentucky Wilson was at the heart of a solid Wildcat defense that shutout Charlotte 1-0. In addition his header in the 108th minute of play out of a corner kick served in by teammate Napo Matsoso was the difference maker on the offensive side of the ball in this crucial Conference USA matchup. Kentucky also tied Lipscomb 1-1 in a non-conference match. The Wildcats are now 6-2-2 overall with a 2-1-0 mark in conference contests.  
Matt Callahan - Senior - Defender - San Diego State The San Diego State co-captain was solid on both sides of the ball for the Aztecs in their 1-1 tie with Oregon State and their 1-0 win over Washington. Callahan was responsible for SDSU's lone goal in the draw with Oregon State. The Aztecs are 6-1-3 overall with a 1-0-1 mark in Pac-12 play. 
Scott Levene - RS Junior - Goalkeeper - Connecticut Levene anchored a solid UConn defense that shutout Providence 1-0 and Tulsa 1-0 on the road. In the contest with Tulsa he had a five save evening that included a huge stop on a penalty kick. Connecticut has now won five straight to improve to 8-3-0 with a 2-0-0 mark in American Athletic Conference play.

Chris Arling - Sophomore - Forward - New Hampshire 

Arling scored twice to lead the Wildcat offense in a 3-0 win over Northeastern. In New Hampshire's 3-0 win over Yale he contributed an assist on teammate freshman midfielder Jack Dickinson's goal, scored from six yards out with a helper from Dickinson, and decisively drove a header into the back of the net out of a free kick served in by sophomore midfielder Alex Valencia. Arling has scored a total of nine goals so far this year. New Hampshire improves to 8-1-0.

Riggs Lennon - Senior - Forward - Creighton The senior transfer from the University of Virginia who is from Paradise Valley, Arizona tied a Creighton school-record when he found the back of the net four times to power the Bluejays past DePaul 4-1. His first goal came from the middle of the box after receiving a cross from Noah Franke. Goal two was a header out of a corner kick served in by Joel Rydstrand. Goal three was at close range with an assist from Akeem Ward. Lennon's fourth goal was a one-timer to the far post with Franke and Myles Englis contributing helpers. Creighton improves to 5-1-2 with a 2-0-0 mark in Big East action.   
Justin Dhillon - Senior - Forward - Cal Poly  Dhillon's fifth goal of the year was the game-winner in Cal Poly's 1-0 win over UCLA before a crowd of 7,032 fans at Alex G. Spanos Stadium in San Luis Obispo, California. Dhillon sent a blast into the top right corner of the net from thirty yards out after receiving and controlling a pass from teammate sophomore defender Nick Carroll. Junior Eric Kam had two saves in goal to record the shutout for the Mustangs who are now 2-4-1 after a very competitive schedule to date that should prepare them well for Big West Conference play. 
Nils Bruening - Sophomore - Forward - North Carolina The Tar Heel forward wore out the back of the net Friday night with a four goal evening to lead UNC to a decisive 5-0 victory over Boston College. Goal one was a one-timer into the net after receiving a cross from Alan Winn. Goal two was another one-timer from within the box with helpers from Nico Melo and Winn. Goal three came after recieving a cross from Zach Wright. Bruening's final goal came off the far post with Jack Skahan and Wright contributing assists. UNC also topped William and Mary on Tuesday and is 7-1-0 overall and 3-0-0 in ACC play.  It was a good weekend on the gridiron and on the soccer pitch for UNC. 
Arion Sobers-Assue - RS Sophomore - Forward - FGCU Few players in the country had a more productive week on the offensive side of the ball than Sobers-Assue. He posted a hat trick to lead the Eagles in a 5-1 thumping of FAU on Tuesday evening in Fort Myers.  He also scored from within the box after receiving a pass from senior forward Dylan Sacramento in FGCU's 4-1 win Saturday night on the road over NJIT in an Atlantic Sun Conference contest. Sacramento also netted two goals in the win over NJIT. FGCU has now won six straight to improve to 6-2-1 with a 1-0-0 mark in ASUN play.   
Mohamed Thiaw - Junior - Forward - Louisville  Thiaw, who was a two-time NSCAA All-American at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College before transferring to Louisville this year, continues to be a difference maker for the Cardinals.  He scored the game-winning goal with an assist from junior back Tim Kubel to give Lousiville the edge they needed to top Saint Louis on the road.  Thiaw also scored twice in Louisville's surprising 6-1 thumping of Virginia. Louisville extended its winning streak to five games in a row to improve to 7-1-1 overall with a 3-0-0 mark in ACC play. 
Jalen Brown - Senior - Midfielder - Xavier  Brown is among the reasons why Xavier has won three out of their last four contests. He made a nice run down the left side of the pitch to put himself in position to one-time a shot into the back of the frame after receiving a pass from teammate Majed Osman. He also was credited with an assist along with Matt Nance on forward Matt Vasquenza's goal in the Musketeers 2-0 win on the road over Georgetown. Xavier is now 4-2-2 overall with a 2-0-0 mark in Big East play. 
Kurtis Turner - Senior - Midfielder - South Carolina   Turner has been an impact player since arriving on campus as a freshman. He scored South Carolina's first goal from twenty yards out with an assist from freshman forward Luca Mayr to help the Gamecocks secure a solid win over in-state rival Furman 3-0.  He also assisted on teammate Koty Millards goal in South Carolina's 3-1 victory over Georgia State. South Carolina has now won four straight to improve to 5-3-0. 
Julio Cervantes - Senior - Midfielder - Pacific Cervantes has been a catalyst on the offensive side of the ball for Pacific. He netted the insurance goal with a double assist from Anthony Orendain and Tristan Blackman in the Tiger's 2-0 on the road upset win over San Diego State. He also scored Pacific's first goal with Blackman supplying the helper in their 2-0 win on the road over Cal State Fullerton. Cervantes has scored in three straight games for Pacific. The Tigers have won six straight to up their record to date to 7-2-0. 
Graham Smith - Junior - Midfielder - Denver  The Pioneer defensive midfielder contributued on both sides of the ball this week.  He was part of a solid Denver defensive effort that resulted in a 0-0 tie with Creighton on Wednesday night at Morrison Stadium in Omaha. He also scored the Pioneers opening goal and then added the game-winning goal to enable Denver to slip past Fort Wayne 4-3 in a closer than anticipated contest at home in the Pioneers season opening Summit League game. Denver is now 8-0-2 with a 1-0-0 mark in Summit League play. 
Tim Kubel -  Junior - Defender - Louisville  Kubel was part of a rock solid Louisville defense that shutout Saint Louis 1-0. He also contributed the assist on teammate Mohamed Thiaw's game-winning goal in that contest. Kubel followed that game up with a four assist evening to play a key role in Louisville's 6-1 win over a highly regarded Virginia team. The four assists established a new school record for assists in a single contest and upped his total to seven so far this year. Louisville has now won five straight to improve to improve to 7-1-1.  
Aaron Jones - Senior - Defender - Clemson  Jones contributed on both sides of the ball helping Clemson secure a 5-0 win over non-conference foe Gardner-Webb and a 2-1 win on the road over Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia Tech. He assisted on one of teammate Diego Campos' two goals in the win over Gardner-Webb and scored the Tiger's first goal in the contest with the Hokies when he surgically placed a shot around the Virgina Tech wall and into the netting out of a free kick from just outside the box. Clemson improves to 5-1-1 with a 1-1-1 mark in conference play. 
Alec Ferrell - RS Senior - Goalkeeper - Wake Forest  Ferrell along with backs Kevin Politz, Logan Gdula, Hunter Bandy and Sam Raden have been a part of a tenacious Demon Deacon defense that has not been scored on in 728:28 minutes while recording seven clean sheets in a row.  Ferrell had five saves in Wake Forest's 2-0 win over FIU and four saves in their 1-0 win over N.C. State in an ACC contest. The Deacons are now 7-1-1 overall with a 3-0-0 mark in ACC play. 

 

College Soccer News - National Team Of The Week - Week Ending September 18, 2016

Albert Ruiz - Junior - Forward - FGCU Ruiz netted a hat trick to help power FGCU past UNCW 5-0. His first goal was skillfully placed just inside the left post after receiving a throw in from teammate Preston Kilwien. His second goal came after receiving a long ball over the top from goalkeeper Sawyer Jackman. Ruiz's third strike was a one-timer to the back post from in front of the goal mouth after receiving a pass from teammate Justin Gavin. FGCU also defeated UCF 3-1 on Wednesday night.  After beginining the season with two losses and a tie, the Eagles have now won four straight to improve to 4-2-1. 
Niko Hansen - Senior - Forward - New Mexico Hansen came up big for the Lobos again this week netting a hat trick in their 3-1 win on the road win over UC Irvine. Hansen's first goal came after he made a nice move to create the space he needed to thread a shot into the net at close range. His second goal came after receiving a pass from Simon Spangenberg. Hansen netted his third goal when he controlled the deflection of teammate Sam Gleadle's shot and sent it back into the frame. New Mexico has now won five in a row to improve to 5-2-0 after beginning the season with 1-0 losses to Indiana and Notre Dame. 
David Goldsmith - Senior - Forward - Butler  Goldsmith earns back-to-back spots on the CSN National Team of the Week after finding the back of the net twice including the game-winning goal in overtime to lead the Bulldogs to a 3-2 victory on the road over Big East foe Villanova.  Goldsmith also contributed the helper on teammate Marco Charalambous' goal. Butler improves to 5-0-1 overall with a 1-0-0 mark in conference play.  
Blake Elder - RS Junior - Forward - Denver Elder made the runs he needed to make to be in the right place at the right time to score two crucial goals this week for Denver. He scored the insurance goal with a double assist from teammates Sam Hamilton and Graham Smith in Denver's 2-0 win over Saint Louis. Elder also scored the game winning goal in the eighty-seventh minute of play in Denver's 1-0 win over North Florida. The game-winning goal was set up by a nice combination of passes from Hamilton and Andre Shinyashiki.  Denver coach Jamie Franks stated, "He (Elder) continues to put himself in great spots and he's got the reward he's deserved from that during this homestand."  Denver improves to 7-0-1.
Ezana Kahsay - RS Sophomore - Forward - Akron Kahsay scored the second goal in Akron's 2-0 win over U.C. Santa Barbara when he controlled the deflection of teammate Jonathan Lewis' shot inside the box and drove it back into the net. He also sent a one timer into the back of the net from five yards out after receiving a cross from senior defender Brad Ruhaak in the eighty-eighth minute to give Akron the edge they needed to top Tulsa 2-1 on the road. The Zips have won three straight to improve to 5-2-0, 
Christian Thierjung - Senior - Midfielder - California Thierjung is a playmaker. He converted a penalty kick in California's 2-0 win over Omaha. He then had an unbelievable five goal game to power the Golden Bears past Harvard 6-2 scoring in the 26th, 50th, 57th, 72nd, and 75th minutes. California improves to 3-2-1 overall.  
Jorge Gomez Sanchez - Senior - Midfielder - Temple Sanchez produced a hat trick to lead Temple past Fairfield 4-0. He deftly sloted his first goal of the evening into the back of the net after a combination of passes from teammates Kevin Klett and Joonas Jokinen set up the goal.  Sanchez then alertly placed the rebound of teammate Joonas Jokinen shot into the back of the goal to tally his second goal of the evening. His third goal of the contest came after receiving a cross from freshman midfielder Albert Moreno. Sanchez scored two goals in Temple's 3-2 loss earlier in the week to rival Drexel. Sanchez has scored a total of nine goals to date. The Owls are 5-2-0.  
Chris Ramsell - Senior - Midfielder - High Point University  The senior linkman from Scottsdale, Arizona had a two goal and one assist evening to help High Point University come from two goals down on the road to secure a 4-2 victory over USC Upstate. Ramsell converted a penalty kick and scored out of a corner kick. He also contributed the assist on senior defender Erien Campbell's game-winning goal to play a key role in the win. Ramsell has netted four goals and contributed two helpers to date. The Panthers improve to 5-0-1 overall. 
Brian Iloski - RS Junior - Midfielder - UCLA Iloski has been a difference maker and playmaker for the Bruins. He drew a foul just outside the box with five seconds remaining in regulation in UCLA's contest with UC Santa Barbara and then skillfully and decisively placed a free kick over the Gaucho wall and just under the crossbar to knot the score at 1-1 to send the match into overtime where Jackson Yueill scored to give UCLA a 2-1 win on the road over a very good UC Santa Barbara team. Iloski also contributed the assist on teammate Willie Raygoza's first goal in UCLA's 4-0 thumping of CSUN. The Bruins are now  4-1-1 overall. 
Chase Clack - Junior - Defender - ETSU Clack anchored the center of a rock solid ETSU defense that shutout highly regarded and previously undefeated North Carolina 1-0. Jonny Sutherland had three saves in goal and Fletcher Ekern produced the the game-winner in that contest. Clack also converted a header out of a free kick with an assist from forward Cameron Woodfin to net the lone goal in ETSU's 1-0 shutout victory over UNC-Asheville. ETSU improves to 4-2-0.  
Matej Dekovic - Senior - Defender - Charlotte Dekovic converted a header out of a corner kick served in by Brandt Bronico to give the 49ers the edge they needed to top Coastal Carolina 1-0. He also was a key part of a stout 49er defense that shutout Coastal Carolina as well as Old Dominion 2-0 on the road in a key Conference USA contest. Junior Harrison Steadman netted both of the goals in the win over ODU. The 49ers are off to an impressive 4-0-0 start during which time they have yet to allow an opponent to score. 
Stefan Cleveland - Grad. Student - Goalkeeper - Louisville  The two-time First Team All-Ivy League selection and the 2015 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year had a big week between the pipes for Louisville. He had two saves in goal to anchor a solid defense that shutout Xavier 2-0. He also recorded a three save evening that included a leaping one-handed save to give the Cardinals the edge they needed to top highly regarded Notre Dame 1-0 behind a goal from junior forward Mohamed Thiaw.  Cleveland has anchored a defense that has allowed just two goals in seven contests for a 0.28 goals against average. Louisville is now 5-1-1 overall with a 2-0-0 mark in ACC play. 

 

 

 

College Soccer News - National Team Of The Week - Week Ending September 11, 2016

Zach Wright - Junior - Forward - North Carolina  Wright assited on Walker Hume's goal and one of the two goals scored by Tucker Hume in North Carolina's 3-0 win over VCU. He also tallied the lone goal with an assist from freshman Cam Lindley in the 87th minute of regulation to give the Tar Heels the edge they needed to prevail 1-0 over ACC foe and highly regarded Clemson. UNC improves to 4-0-0.  
David Goldsmith - Senior - Forward - Butler  Goldsmith scored twice and assisted on teammate Mitch Ostrowski's goal to lead the Bulldogs past UC Santa Barbara 4-2. Goldsmith also scored twice to play a key role in Butler's 3-0 win over Oregon State. The Bulldogs improve to 4-0-1 and will try to remain undefeated when they travel to open Big East Conference play with Villanova on September 17.  
Nicco Mastrangelo - Sophomore - Forward - Saint Francis  Mastrangelo converted a header out of a corner kick served in by Stefan Sjekloca in SFU's 3-1 win over Penn State. He also netted the game-winning goal that was set up by an assist from brother Mario Mastrangelo to give the Red Flash the edge they needed to top Niagara  Saint Francis improves to 4-2-0. SFU will face Cornell and Colgate this coming weekend in Ithaca, New York.  
Jeroen Meefout - Junior - Forward - San Diego State Meefout scored from eighteen yards out and from ten yards out to power the Aztecs past UTRGV 3-0. He also netted both of San Diego State's goals in their 2-0 win over Memphis. Meefout accounted for four the the five goals the Aztecs scoed over the weekend. San Diego State is off and running with a 4-0-1 record to date. 
Eddie Sanchez - Senior - Midfielder - Portland  Sanchez played a key role in enabling Portland to rally from two goals down to secure a 2-2 tie with Evansville. Sanchez sent a picture bicycle kick goal into the net in that contest to give the Pilots new life. He also alertly sent the rebound of his own missed penalty kick back into the net in Portland's 3-0 win over Bradley.  The Pilots are 4-1-1 season to date. 
Grant Stoneman - RS Sophomore - Midfielder - Loyola Chicago  Stoneman alertly took control of a turnover in the box and sent it back into the goal to get net Loyola Chicago's first score in their 2-0 win over Utah State. He also contributed what proved to be the game-winning goal in Loyola Chicago's 4-0 win over Binghamton when he sent a cross received from teammate junor Broday Kraussel into the back of he net from fifteen yards out. The Ramblers are 5-0-0 for the first time in the history of the program. 
Wuiito Fernandes - Senior - Midfielder - UMass Lowell UMass Lowell has won five straight to claim the program's longest winning streak as a Division I team. Fernandes scored twice to help power the Riverhawks past Quinnipiac 2-1 on Staturday. In the 53rd minute of play he used his head to redirect a cross served in by Carlos Ruiz into the back of the net. He also placed a shot into the frame from around the top of the box in the 66th minute of the contest with a double assist from teammates Ivan Blaskic and Ivan Abramovic.  
Hayden Partain - Senior - Midfielder - Wake Forest Partain made a nice run to be on the receiving end of a cross from teammate Jon Bakero which Partain deftly placed in the goal in overtime to give Wake Forest a good 1-0 victory over long standing nemesis Virginia in a crucial early season Atlantic Coast Conference contest. After losing their season opener, the Demon Deacons have bounced back to win four straight to improve to 4-1-0.  
Jack Hagstrom - Sophomore - Defender - Brown Hagstrom was part of a very effective Brown defense that helped the Bears secure a 2-1 win in overtime with Georgia State and a 2-0 victory over SMU in the Capital City Classic at Stevenson-Field in Provicence, Rhode Island. Brown improves to 3-0-0 but they have an interesting contest coming up when they travel to face undefeated UMass Lowell on Wednesday, September 14. 
Brandon Aubrey - Senior - Defender - Notre Dame Aubrey continues to play a key role in Notre Dave's success to date. The Irish center back contributes on both sides of the ball. In Notre Dame's 4-1 win over Virginia Tech, he converted a penalty kick, drove a header into the back of the net, and scored out of a free kick from twenty yards out to record a hat trick. The Irish improve to 5-0-0.  
Ryan Baird - Junior - Goalkeeper - Rider  Baird did a very good job of anchoring and organizing a bend but don't break Broncs defense that helped the Broncs claim a 1-0 shutout win over NJIT and a 2-0 shutout win over Temple. Baird had three saves in the contest with NJIT and he had seven saves including a huge stop of a penalty kick in the victory over Temple. Rider improves to 4-0-0.
