College Soccer News - National Team Of The Week - Week Ending October 30, 2016

Gordon Wild - Sophomore - Forward - Maryland  Wild continues to make an impact for the Terps. He contributed a hat trick including a clutch game-winning goal in the 107th minute of play to power the Terps past a determined Delaware sice 3-2 in double overtime. Amar Sejdic, George Campbell, Chris Odoi-Atsem, Jake Rozhansky and Eryk Williamson were credited with assists in the contest. Wild also scored in Maryland's 3-2 win over Michigan.  The Terps finish regular season play undefeated with a 15-0-2 overall record and a 7-0-1 mark in Big Ten Conference play. 
Billy Metzler - RS Sophomore - Forward - JMU  Metzler served in the corner kick that senior midfielder Callum Hill headed into the back of the net and placed the rebound of his own shot into the back of the frame to power the Dukes to a 2-0 win over UNCW on the road. The gutsy Dukes lead by Metzler have now won three in a row to improve to 4-9-3 with a 3-3-2 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play.  
Joao Ramalho - RS Senior - Forward - ETSU  Ramalho played a key role in ETSU's gutsy 3-2 come from behind win over Mercer on the road. Ramalho netted the game-tying goal in the 77th minute of play and the game-winning goal in the 88th minute of the contest. The Bucs topped UNCG earlier in the week with freshman defender Joe Pickering contributing the game-winner. ETSU improves to 11-4-2 overall and secures the Southern Conference regular season title with a 7-1-2 mark. 
Jackson Morse - Freshman - Midfielder - Memphis Morse found the back of the net twice giving the Tigers the punch they needed to upset UConn 2-0. He placed a shot into the top right corner of the goal with a double assist from teammates Alec Velez and Hecotr Cantele and sent a shot into the right corner of the frame from within the box after receiving a pass from Jordan Klipsh. Memphis halts a three game losing streak to improve to 8-7-1 with a 2-3-1 mark in American Althletic Conference action.  
Tanner Thompson - Senior - Midfielder - Indiana Thompson was in a zone scoring three first half goals to lead the Hoosiers to a 5-0 win over a good Saint Louis team. The hat trick was the first for an Indiana player since the 2012 campaign. Midfielder Austin Panchot and defender Andrew Gutman also found the back of the net for Indiana. Thompson also netted the game winning goal in IU's 2-1 win over Michigan State. Indiana improves to 10-1-6 overall with a 3-0-5 mark in Big Ten action. 
Julian Gressel - Senior - Midfielder - Providence Gressel and his Friar teammates have momentum. Gressel assisted on teammate Danny Griffin's goal in Providence's 2-1 win over Marquette. He also scored the game-winning goal to give the Friar's the edge they needed to help Providence top Creighton 1-0 in Omaha. Gressel has found the back of the net a total of ten times year to date. Providence has won seven straight to improve to 11-5-0 overall with a 6-2-0 mark in the Big East Conference. 
Napo Matsoso - Senior - Midfielder - Kentucky Matsoso had a very productive week.  He scored twice to lead the Wildcats past Florida Atlantic University 2-on the road and also contributred two goals in Kentucky's win over Marshall. The Wildcats have won six straight to improve to 11-3-2 overall. 
Wuilito Fernandez - Senior - Midfielder - UMass Lowell  Fernandez scored and assisted on both of teammate Ivan Abramovic's two goals to help the River Hawks come from two goals down to top non conference foe Boston College 3-2 in overtime. He also scored the lone goal in UMass Lowell's 1-0 win over Albany in a key America East Conference contest. Fernandez has found the back of the net a total of ten times so far this year. The River Hawks improve to 12-1-2 overall with a 4-1-1 mark in conference play.  
Sam Brown - Junior - Midfielder - Harvard Brown played a key role in two Crimson wins. He provided the assist out of a corner kick on senior midfielder Daniel Smith's goal and served in the helper out of a corner kick on junior defender Eric Gylling's game winner in Harvard's 2-1 win over New Hampshire. He also netted the game-winner to give the Crimson a 1-0 win over Dartmouth in Ivy League play. Harvard improves to 10-3-2 and is currently in sole possession of first place in Ancient Eight play with a 4-0-1 record.  
Kyle Clinton - Freshman - Defender - Georgia State Clinton alertly scored on a rebound off a throw in from teammate Liam Fitzsimmons in overtime to give the Panthers a 1-0 win over the College of Charleston. He also converted a header out of a free kick put in play by Casey Shultis to record what proved to be the game winning goal in GSU's decisive 4-0 win over Hartwick in a Sun Belt Conference match. Clinton has also been a part of a Panther defense that has recorded four consecutive shutouts. GSU has now won five straight to improve to 12-6-0 with a 3-1-0 mark in Sun Belt play.  
Justin Schmidt - RS Senior - Defender - Washington Schmidt was part of a solid Washington defensive effort that helped the Huskies prevail over California 2-1 and Stanford 1-0 in Pac-12 matches.  He also scored the game-winning goal in overtime in Washington's victory over Stanford. The Huskies improve to 12-4-0 with a 6-2-0 mark in Pac-12 Conference play. 
Nick Ulowetz - RS Junior - Defender - Gonzaga  Ulowetz netted three unanswered goals for the Zags who came from behind to top San Diego 3-2. He became the first Gonzaga player since the 2001 season to record a hat trick. Jacob Granlund assisted on Ulowetz's first tow goals and Ben White provided the helper on the third. 
Quentin Low - Junior - Goalkeeper - DePaul  Low was a key ingredient in a tough Blue Demon defense that shutout Butler 1-0 and St. John's 1-0. He made the saves he needed to make to put his team in position to secure the wins. Low had nine saves in the contest with Butler and two saves in the victory over St. John's. DePaul improves to 9-6-2 overall with a 4-4-0 mark in Big East Conference action. 

 

College Soccer News - National Team Of The Week - Week Ending October 23, 2016

Connor Maloney - Senior - Forward - Penn State Maloney placed a shot into the top right corner of the net from just outside the box and drove a deflection into the lower right corner of the goal from within the box to power the Nittany Lion attack in a 2-2 tie with Akron. He also contributed a goal and an assist to help Penn State top Rutgers 3-2 in overtime in Big Ten play. Penn State improves to 7-6-2 overall with a 4-3-0 mark in conference play. 
Adrian Nunez - Freshman - Forward - North Florida Nunez scored twice to get the North Florida attack on track in their 3-2 come from behind upset win over FGCU in a key ASUN contest. Mickey Connell netted the game-winning goal for the Ospreys. Nunez also converted a penalty kick to help UNF top Stetson 3-2 in ASUN play. The Ospreys are 8-3-1 overall with a perfect 4-0-0 mark in conference play. 
Andre Shinyashiki - Sophomore - Forward - Denver Shinyashiki netted the game-winning goal out of a corner kick served in by Karsten Hanlin with eight seconds remaining in the second overtime period to propel Denver to a 2-1 win over New Mexico in a non-conference contest between two familiar foes. He also scored from eighteen yards out after receiving a pass from Chandler Crosswait to help Denver top Oral Robers 2-0 in a Summit League game. The Pioneers improve to 14-0-2 overall with a 5-0-0 mark in conference action.  
Alex Heilmann - Senior - Forward - CS Fullerton Heilmann decisively drove a header just inside the right post after receiving a well played cross from teammate Robert Coronado in Cal State Fullerton's 3-1 win over UC Irvine. He also drove a shot into the far past from ten yards out after receiving a pass from Ros McPhie to net the lone goal of the evening to give the Titans the edge they needed to top UC Riverside on the road 1-0. Cal State Fullerton has now won three in a row to improve their record to 8-8-1 with a 4-3-1 mark in Big West Conference play.   
Siggi Benonysson - Freshman - Forward - HPU Benonysson continues to be at the center of the High Point University offense. This week he contributed a goal to help the Panthers top Winthrop 2-1 in a contest that was determined in overtime. He also provided the assist on teammate Jon Bolanos's game winner in HPU's 1-0 win over Radford. Benonysson has scored ten goals and has four helpers so far this year. The Panthers improve to 10-3-2 overall with a 4-1-0 mark in Big South Conference play. 
Luka Prpa - Freshman - Midfielder - Marquette Prpa scored Marquette's first two goals in their 4-1 win over Xavier in Big East play. Junior midfelder Daniel Szczepanek and freshman forward Connor Alba also contributed goals in the win. Prpa has scored a total of eight goals and added six assists so far this year. Marquette improves to 4-5-4 overall with a 1-3-2 mark in conference play.  
Miguel Polley - RS Junior - Midfielder - Villanova  Polley assisted on the goals scored by teammates Eric McKenna and Lucas Hodges and contributed a goal in Villanona's 4-0 win over Penn. He also scored out of a free kick from eighteen yards out to give the Wilcats the edge they needed to top Creighton 1-0. Villanova improves to 10-5-2 overall with a 3-2-1 mark in Big East play.  
Brandon Williamson- Freshman - Midfielder - Duke Williamson's first two goals as a Blue Devil were huge as they enabled Duke to secure a 2-1 come from behind win over Notre Dame in an ACC contest. His first goal was a bullet into the right corner of the goal. His game-winner in overtime came after receiving a well played cross from freshman Max Moser which Williamson controlled and sent into the back of the frame. The Blue Devils also topped Campbell 3-2 in a non-conference match earlier in the week. Duke improves to 6-6-2 overall and 2-4-1 in conference play. 
Brandt Bronico - Senior - Midfielder - Charlotte The Charlotte midfielder from High Point, North Carolina had a hat trick that included the game-winning goal in the 49ers 5-0 win over UAB in a CUSA contest. Bronico produced the hat trick on just four shots. Charlotte also tied Virginia Tech out of the ACC 0-0 on the road.  Bronico is a key element of a 49er team that is 9-2-1 overall.  
Aram Ouligian - Sophomore - Defender - Colgate The sophomore back from Needham, Massachusetts had a solid week of play on both sides of the ball. He was part of a solid Raider backline that shutout New York rival Hartwick 1-0 in a non-conference contest in which Ethan Kutler produced the lone goal and a 1-0 Patriot League victory over Navy in which Ouligian provided the game-winner. The win over Navy was the 100th carreer win for Raider head coach Erik Ronning with all coming during his tenure to date as the Colgate head coach. Colgate improves to 10-4-1 with a 4-1-1 mark in League play. 
Alex Crognale - Senior - Defender - Maryland Crognale earned a repeat spot on the CSN National Team of the Week with a two goal evening in Maryland's 2-1 win over Hofstra. Gordon Wild assisted on the first goal and Amar Sejdic supplied the helper on the second. The Terps also topped American 2-1 with Sejdic and Wild contributing a goal each. Maryland improves to 13-0-2 overall with a 6-0-1 mark in conference play.  
Alec Ferrell - RS Senior - Goalkeeper - Wake Forest Ferrell continues to take care of business between the pipes for the Demon Deacons who have allowed a total of only seven goals to date. Ferrell had a three save evening to anchor a Wake Forest defense that shutout a solid South Carolina side 1-0 at Stone Stadium in Columbia. He also had seven saves including several big time stops as Wake Forest shutout a good Boston College team 1-0 in an ACC contest. The Deacons have won four straight to improve to 12-2-2 overall with a 5-1-1 mark in ACC play. 

 

College Soccer News - National Team Of The Week - Week Ending October 16, 2016

Zach Wright - Junior -Forward - North Carolina Wright scored North Carolina's first goal in their 7-0 thumping of UNC Ashville.  He also came up big for the Tar Heels when he made a nice move at speed off the dribble to create the space he needed to drive a shot into the back of the goal from near the top of the box to net the game-winner in UNC's 2-1 win over rival Duke in ACC action. The Tar Heels are 10-2-1 overall with a 4-1-1 mark in conference action.  
Julio Moncada - RS Junior Forward - UNCW Moncada contributed the asist on junior forward Stian Sandbekkhaug's goal in UNCW's 1-1 tie with the College of Charleston. He also scored twice to lead the Seahawks to a 3-1 win over Hofstra. UNCW improves to 7-2-2 overall with a 2-0-2 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play. 
Matthew Puig - Freshman - Forward - Tulsa Puig netted what proved to be the game winning goal from seventeen yards out after receiving a pass from Quinton Duncan to help Tulsa upset Creighton 2-1. He also contributed a goal when he scored from seven yards out with a double assist from teammates Rollie Rocha and Kay Quit to help the Golden Hurricane defeate a determined UCF team 3-2. Tulsa improves to 7-4-2 overall with a 2-2-0 mark in American Athletic Conference action.  
Ahinga Selemani - Junior - Forward - UCSB Selemani has been finding the back of the net on a consistent basis for the Gauchos. This week he scored their lone goal in a 1-1 draw with Sacramento State. Selemani also netted UCSB's first goal with Kevin Feucht providing the second in their 2-1 come from behind win on the road over Cal Poly before a crowd of 11,075 fans. UCSB improves to 8-5-2 overall with a 4-0-2 mark in Big West Conference play. 
Adam Wilson - Sophomore - Midfielder - Cinciinnati  Wilson is a playmaker. He had two assists in the Bearcats 3-0 nonconference win over IUPUI and contributed two more helpers in their 4-0 win over Temple in an American Athletic Conference contest. Wilson now has ten assists so far this year. The Bearcats rebound from a 5-0 thumping from Connecticut to win two straight to up their record to 8-4-1 with a 3-1-0 mark in conference play.  
Ian Harkes - Senior - Midfielder - Wake Forest Harkes is a playmaker. His penalty kick proved to be the difference in the Demon Deacons 1-0 win over Marshall. Wake Forest was awarded the penalty kick when Luis Argudo was fouled in the box. He also converted a penalty kick to score Wake Forest's second goal in their 2-1 win over Louisville. The Deacons improve to 10-2-2 overall with a 4-1-1 mark in ACC play.   
Garrett Heine - Senior - Midfielder - George Washington Heine had a productive week of play.  He scored twice and contributed an assist in George Washington's 3-0 win over George Mason. He also scored twice to lead the Colonials past Saint Joseph's 3-0. The Colonials improve to 7-5-2 overall with a 2-1-2 mark in Atlantic 10 play.  
Tomas Hilliard-Arce - Junior - Defender - Stanford Hilliard-Acre was a key part of a Stanford defense that was rock solid. This week the Cardinal was very effective on both sides of the ball recording a 3-0 shutout win over UCLA and a 3-1 win over San Diego State in two key Pac-12 Conference contests. Hilliard-Acre drove a header into the back of the net out of a set piece served in by Corey Baird in the win over San Diego State. The Cardinal improve to 8-2-3 overall with a 5-0-0 mark in conference play. .   
Robby Sagel - Senior - Defender - Penn State Sagel was part of a solid Nittany Lion defense that shutout Pitt 1-0 and Michigan State 1-0. He also contributed the game winning goal in double overtime in the contest with Michigan State when he decisively drove a header into the back of the net out of a free kick served in by Riley Grant. Penn State gains momemtum and improves to 6-6-1 with a 3-3-0 mark in Big Ten play. 
Alex Crognale - Senior - Defender - Maryland Crognale played a key role in Maryland's 3-2 come from behind win over a very determined Wisconsin team. He scored out of a free kick served in by Amar Sejdic and out of a corner kick with a double assist from Sejdic and Chris Odoi-Atsem. The Terps also topped West Virginia on the road 1-0 with Sedjdic netting the lone goal of the match. Maryland improves to 11-0-2 overall. 
Jeff Caldwell - Junior - Goalkeeper - Virginia Caldwell has been taking care of business between the pipes for the Cavaliers. He had a seven save evening to anchor a stout Virginia defense that shutout an explosie Notre Dame team 1-0 in a big Atlantic Coast Conference contest. Sophomore forward Edward Opoku scored the lone goal for Virginia in the win over the Irish. Caldwell was also rock solid in goal in Virginia's 1-1 tie with Radford. The Cavaliers are unbeaten in their last six games to improve to 7-2-4 overall with a 2-2-2 mark in ACC play.  

 

College Soccer News - National Team Of The Week - Week Ending October 9, 2016

Logan Paynter - RS Sophomore - Forward - Lipscomb Paynter scored at close range out of a corner kick and netted the game-winning goal when he skillfully placed a shot just inside the left post with just a few ticks remaining in regulation to enable the Bison to top USC Upstate in an Atlantic Sun Conference match. Credit teammate Ivan Alvardo with setting both goals up with very nice assists. Lipscomb improves to 6-5-1 with a 2-2-0 mark in conference play.  
Riggs Lennon - Senior - Forward - Creighton Lennon continues to be a difference maker for Creighton. This week he headed in the game-winning goal out of a corner kick to give the Bluejays the edge they needed to top Butler 1-0 in a key Big East Conference contest. Lennon has scored a total of nine goals including three game-winners to date for Creighton. The Bluejays up their record to 7-1-3 overall with a 3-0-1 mark in league play. 
Ivan Abramovic - RS Freshman - Forward UMass Lowell Abramovic scored twice to help power the River Hawks to a convincing 4-0 victory on the road over UMBC. He slotted a shot into the upper right corner of the frame after receiving a through ball from Wuilito Fernandez and also drove a shot into the back of the net from fifteen yards out with Fernandez again providing the helper. The win was UMass Lowell's first ever over UMBC. The River Hawks continue to soar with a 8-0-2 record and a 1-0-1 mark against Amercia East Conference teams.  
Zach Pagani - Senior - Forward - Colgate Pagani scored both of Colgate's goals in their 2-1 win over Boston University. He also scored the Raiders first goal when he placed the rebound of teammate Jared Stroud's header into the back of the twine in Colgate's 4-3 overtime win against Bucknell. The Raiders are now 8-3-0 with a 3-1-0 record in Patriot League play.  
Brian Saramago - Freshman - Forward - Loyola Maryland  Saramago was a catalyst for the Greyhounds on the offensive side of the ball.  He and teammate Barry Sharifi combined to proved the assist on freshman Shane Kasti's game-winning strike in the Greyhounds 1-0 win over American. He also produced a hat trick in Loyola's 3-3 tie with Boston University. The vastly improved Greyhounds improve to 5-5-1 overall with a 3-0-1 record in Patiot Leage play. 
Brandt Bronico - Senior - Midfielder - Charlotte The 49er linkman who hails from High Point, North Carolina converted two penalty kicks to lead Charlotte over New Mexico 2-1 in a key Conference USA match. Credit redshirt sophomore forward Daniel Bruce with the footwork and play within the box that drew both of the penalty kicks. The 49ers pick up a nice CUSA win to improve to 7-2-0 overall with a 3-1-0 mark in league play.  
Matt Crawford - Junior - Midfielder - Saint Joseph's Crawford scored twice and assisted on teammate Derek MacKinnon's game-winning goal in the Hawks 3-1 come from behind win over Rhode Island.  He also contriubed the helper on MacKinnon's match-winner in Saint Joseph's 2-1 win over George Mason. Crawford has scored seven goals and contributed three assists so far this year.  The Hawks are now 6-5-1 overall with a 3-0-0 mark in Atlantic 10 Conference play. 
Kwame Awuah - Senior - Midfielder - Connecticut The UConn stalwart scored twice to help power the Huskies in a 5-0 thumping of Cincinnati in an American Athletic Conference contest. Connecticut has now won six straight to improve to 9-3-0 overall with a 3-0-0 mark in conference play.   
Alexis Souahy - Junior - Defender - Bowling Green Souahy scored twice in the second half of play to help the Falcons secure a 2-1 come from behind victory over Northern Kentucky. Bowling Green head coach Eric Nichols stated, "Alexis is dangerous on set pieces. He's able to get on all of them. Even when he's not scoring, he's creating something." Souahy was also part of a solid Bowling Green defensive effort that shutout West Virgina 1-0 in Morgantown. Bowling Green improves to 8-3-1 with a 1-0-0 mark in MAC contests.  
Brad Ruhaak - Senior - Defender - Akron Ruhaak anchored a very solid Akron backline along with fellow senior back Danilo Radjen that shutout what has been a very productive Buffalo offense in a 4-0 win. Ruhaak also decisively drove a header in the back of the frame out of a corner kick to record Akron's first goal in this Mid-American Conference opener for both teams. Akron improves to 6-3-1 overall with a 1-0-0 mark in MAC play.  
Bernardo Mattos - Senior - Defender - Albany Mattos was a key part in an Albany defense that enabled the Great Danes to contain a very good Syracuse attack and secure a 2-1 win over Syracuse. He also was at the heart of an Albany defense that shutout a potent Vermont offense in route to a 4-0 victory in an American East Conference contest. Mattos missed the first four contests of the season but since his return the Great Dane defense has gelled. Albany head coach Trevor Gorman stated, "We'll take our defenders any day of the week." Albany is 6-3-2 overall with a 1-0-1 mark in league play.  
Cory Brown - Junior - Defender - Xavier Brown converted a header after receiving a cross from defender Josh Grant to lift the Musketeers to a 1-0 win on the road over a determined Cleveland State team. Senior forward Jalen Brown was credited with the assist on the goal. Brown also was at the center of an Xavier defense that shutout St. John's 2-0. Jalen Brown and Majed Osman provided the goals in that contest. Xavier is now 6-3-2 overall with a 3-1-0 mark in Big East action. 
Jon Wendt - Junior - Goalkeeper - Air Force Wendt made several huge saves including a stop of a penalty kick to anchor an Air Force defense that shutout Grand Canyon 1-0 on the road in a Western Athletic Conference contest. Midfielder Tucker Bone scored the lone goal of the evening before a crowd of 3,800 fans.  The Falcons are looking good with a 9-3-0 overall record and a 3-0-0 mark in league play.
