College Soccer News National Team Of The Week - Week Ending October 26, 2014

Jamie Dubyoski - Junior - Forward - Navy Dubyoski creates opportunitites.  He scored twice to lead the Mids past UMBC 2-0.  He also created a turnover in the box which he deposited into the back of the net and assisted on teammate Geoff Fries' game winning goal to help Navy sink Holy Cross 2-1.  Dubyoski is among the reasons why the Mids have won six straight and are now 10-4-2 overall with a 5-1-0 mak in Patriot League play. He has scored in four straight games and has a total of six game winning goals so far this year.   
Cyle Larin - Sophomore - Forward - Connecticut  Larin scored twice to help power the Huskies past Temple 3-1 as head coach Ray Reid earned his 400th win. Larin also netted the game winning goal after receiving a pass from teammate Kwame Awuah in UConn's 2-1 win over SMU. The surging Huskies improve to 7-6-2 overall and move into first place in the American Athletic Conference with a 5-1-1 record. 
Jason Grant - Senior - Forward - Western Michigan  Grant's second goal of the 2014 season and the tenth of his carrear was a big one.  He slotted a shot into the lower corner of the goal from eighteen yards out off a double assist from teammates Greg Timmer and Sean Conerty to give the Broncos the edge they needed to secure a 1-0 on the road win over Akron in MAC play.  WMU improves to 8-4-3 overall and moves into first place in the MAC with a 2-0-1 record. 
Mamadee Nyepon - Senior - Forward - High Point  Nyepon scored twice and assisted on Renato Punyed's game winning goal in HPU's 3-2 overtime win over a very talented Winthrop team. He now has forty career goals to become High Point's all-time leader in goals scored.  His first score was a header placed just inside the far post off an assist from teammate Avery Ryan. His second shot was from close range after creating the space he needed to slot the ball into the back of the frame after receiving a ball from Ebe Kudolo.  HPU is now 7-6-1 with a 4-1-0 mark in Big South Conference play.  
Zach Bond - Sophomore - Forward - Rider  Bond and his Rider teammates had a productive week of play topping Saint Peter's 4-0 and Siena 6-1 in MAAC play to improve to 8-5-2 overal with a 5-3-0 mark in conference action to move into a tie for first place.  Bond alertly placed a rebound into the back of the net and skillfully lofted two shots into the goal to record a hat trick in the win over Saint Peter's. He also assisted on one of teammate Jose Aguinaga's two scores in the victory over Siena.  
Timi Mulgrew - Senior - Midfielder - George Mason  Mulgrew came up big once again scoring his 11th and 12th goals of the year to enable George Mason to come from behind to defeat the Davidson Wildcats 2-1 in overtime in Atlantic 10 play. Henning Dirks set up Mulgrew's first goal with a well played and timed cross into the box that Mulgrew headed into the goal. Mulgrew netted the game winner when he converted a penalty kick in overtime. The Patriots improve to 10-3-3 overall with a 3-2-1 win in A-10 play.  
Chris Wehan - RS Sophomore - Midfielder - New Mexico   Wehan scored from close range after receiving a through ball from Niko Hansen and sent a highlight reel blast into the back of the net from thirty yards out to lead New Mexico to a 4-0 win over Old Dominion is a CUSA match. The Lobos have now won six out of their last eight contests to improve to 10-3-1 with a 3-2-0 mark in conference play. 
Napo Matsoso - Sophomore - Midfielder - Kentucky   In a game of momentum shifts that required overtime to determine a winner, Matsoso netted a hat trick as Kentucky topped South Carolina 4-3 to move into first place in the CUSA standings. His first goal came from six yards out with a double assist from Charlie Reymann and Bryan Celis. His second goal was a rocket from twenty yards out with Celis providing the assist.  His third score came from within the box after receiving a pass from Justin Laird.  
Cory Brown - Freshman - Defender - Xavier  Brown who hails from New Zealand was a key part of a bend but don't break Xavier defensive effort that shutout a very good Marquette team 1-0 at Valley Fields in Milwaukee. After a rocky start the Muskeeters have now settled in and are unbeaten in their last nine contests during which time they have only allowed three goals. Xavier improves to 10-3-2 with a 4-0-2 mark in Big East play. Sophomore forward Jalen Brown scored the game winner for Xavier. 
Cole Seiler - Junior - Defender - Georgetown Seiler was a valuable part of a solid Georgetown defensive effort that enabled the Hoyas to shutout the Creighton Bluejays 1-0 at Morrison Stadium in Omaha in a pivotal Big East Conference contest. With the victory the Hoyas get back into the win column and improve to 8-3-4 with a 3-2-1 mark in conference play. Freshman midfielder Arun Basuljevic netted the game winning goal for Georgetown with an assist from senior forward Austin Martz.  
Wesley Matthews - Sophomore - Defender - Rhode Island The Ram center back anchored a defense that helped produce a 4-1 win over Massachusetts and a 2-0 shutout of Saint Joseph's. Matthews assisted on Dante Lamb's game winning goal in the win over Massachusetts and converted a header out of a free kick that proved to be the game winner in the contest with Saint Joseph's. The Rams are unbeaten in their past eleven matches to improve to 10-3-3 with a 6-0-0 mark in A-10 play.  
Austin Pack - Junior - Goalkeeper - Charlotte  Pack was outstanding between the pipes for the 49ers making the keep stops that he needed to make to put his team in position to prevail. He had four saves including several key stops in Charlotte's 0-0 tie on the road with Marshall.  He was rock solid in Charlotte's 1-0 win over UAB during which he recorded six saves. The 49ers improve to 11-2-1 with a 4-1-1 mark in CUSA play.  

 

College Soccer News National Team Of The Week - Week Ending October 19, 20144

Justin Laird - Senior - Forward - Kentucky  Laird and his Kentucky teammates had a productive week of play.  Laird scored and assisted on teammate Paul Sime's goal to help Kentucky top Evansville 5-1. He also one-timed a cross played in by Stefan Stojkovic into the back of the net to enable the Wildcats to defeat a very good New Mexico team 1-0 in a key CUSA contest. Kentucky is undefeated in their past six matches and now stands at 8-3-3 with a 3-0-2 mark in conference play. 
Markus Naglestad - RS Senior - Forward - Providence Naglestad made good use of his time on the pitch by contributing the insurance goal with a double assist from Mac Steeves and Dominik Machando in Providence's 2-0 win over Georgetown.  He also netted the game-winning goal in Providence's 3-2 victory over St. John's when he placed a shot into the bottom right corner of the net from the top of the box. Naglestad has scored seven times so far this year. The Friars improve to 8-2-1 overall with a 3-0-1 mark in Big East play. 
Guillermo Delgado - Sophomore -Forward - Delaware

Delgado is a playmaker who consistently finds the back of the net for the Blue Hens. He netted the game winning goal in double overtime to propel Delaware past Hofstra 2-1.  He also scored his tenth goal of the 2014 campaign in Delaware's 3-1 win over William and Mary.  The Blue Hens improve to 10-4-0 with a 3-1-0 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play.   

Ben Wignall - Freshman - Forward - Farifield Wignall scored from twelve yards out after receiving a cross from Jake Zuniga to help Fairfield defeat Manhattan 3-2.  Wignall also controlled the rebound of teammate Hrvoje Glaven's shot and slotted in into the goal to give the Stags a 1-0 win over Canisius College. Fairfield is unbeaten in its last five games to improve to 6-3-4 with a 3-1-2 mark in MAAC play. 
Alan Reiter - Senior - Midfielder - Davidson Reiter had a productive week of play for the Wildcats. He fired a shot from fifteen yards out that deflected off the cross bar amd into the net in the 95th minute of play to give Davidson a 2-1 win over the Duke Blue Devils.  His sixth goal of the 2014 campaign came when he alertly placed a rebound of teammate Luke Blades' shot into the back of the net in Davidson's 2-0 win over St. Bonaventure in an A-10 contest. The Wildcats are now 7-1-3 with a 1-1-1 mark in conference action.  
Jason Stacy - Junior - Midfielder - Michigan State Stacy powered a shot into the top right hand corner of the frame from twenty-five yards out and assisted on the goals scored by Zach Carroll and Fatai Alashe to help propell the Spartans past Western Michigan 4-0. He also scored from twenty yards out on a corner kick served in by teammate Dewey Lewis to help Michigan State defeat Penn State 2-0 to improve to 9-2-2 overall with a 3-1-1 mark in what has become a very close Big Ten Conference race.  
Patrick Hodan - Junior - Midfielder - Notre Dame  Hodan's penalty kick gave the Irish the edge they needed to top Northwestern 1-0.  He also displayed his skill with the ball at his feet by creating the space he needed to finish two scoring opportunities in Notre Dame's 4-1 win over ACC foe Duke. Hodan has scored five goals in Notre Dame's last four contests to help the Irish improve to 8-3-2 overall with a 4-1-1 mark in ACC play.  
Tim Schmoll - Junior - Midfielder - Harvard   Schmoll converted a header after receiving a cross from Andrew Chang in Harvard's 3-0 win over Holy Cross.  He also scored Harvard's lone goal with an assist from Kyle Henderson in their 1-1 on the road tie with Ivy League foe Brown.  The Crimson are now unbeaten in their last nine contests to improve to 8-3-1 overall with a 2-0-1 mark in Ancient Eight play. 
Bryan Breslin - Senior - Defender - UC Irvine  Breslin scored the lone goal of the contest when he volleyed a shot into the back of the net that was served in out of a corner kick by Gor Kirakosyan in the Anteater's 1-0 win over Cal State Fullerton in Big West Conference play.  He also was part of a solid UC Irvine defense lead by goalkeeper Michael Breslin that has recorded three consecutive shutouts. UC Irvine improves to 11-1-2 with a 3-1-1 mark in conference play. 
Tim Kubek - Freshman - Defender - Louisville Kubel continues to be a difference maker at Louisville. He converted a penalty kick that proved to be the game winning goal as Louisville topped FGCU 2-1 to halt a four game losing streak.  He also converted a penalty kick and assisted on teammate Jerry Ramirez's game winning goal to play a key role in Louisville's 2-1 upset win over highly regarded Syracuse.  The Cardinals improve to 7-5-1 with a 4-2-0 mark in ACC action.  
Wes Mink - Freshman - Goalkeeper - Oakland Mink anchors a stout Golden Grizzlie defense that has recorded five consecutive shutouts.  He recorded five saves in Oakland's 2-0 win over Milwaukee and five saves in their 2-0 victory over Belmont.  The Golden Grizzlies have won six straight to improve to 6-5-1 with a 5-0-1 record in Horizon League play.  

 

College Soccer News National Team Of The Week - Week Ending October 12, 2014

Maid Memic - Senior - Forward - Hofstra  Memic converted a penalty kick to give Hofstra a 1-0 win over Wake Forest in Winston Salem.  He also netted what proved to be the game winning goal when he placed a shot into the top-right corner of the goal in Hofstra's 3-1 win over William and Mary. Hofstra snapped an eight-game winnless streak in the series with the Tribe to up thier record to 7-3-2 with a 2-0-0 mark in CAA play.  
Andy Craven - Senior - Forward - North Carolina Craven converted a header from six yards out with a double assist from Tyler Engel and Verneri Valimaa in UNC's 3-0 win over Campbell.  He also scored twice to power the Tar Heel attack in a 5-0 win over ACC foe Virginia Tech.  Craven has now scored seven goals to date including five game winners.  North Carolina ups their record to 8-4-0.     
Rory Knibbs - Sophomore - Forward - San Jose State Knibbs drove a shot just inside the left post from fifteen yards out and converted a header at close range with an assist from Frankie Beauchamp to help the Spartans top Air Force 5 to 1.  He also scored the lone goal of the evening for the Spartans in their 1-1 tie with UMKC when he controlled a deflection and placed it in the back of the net from fourteen yards out.  
Danny Musovski - Freshman - Forward - UNLV Musovski is among the reasons why UNLV is off to an 9-2-1 record with a perfect 3-0-0 mark in WAC play.  He headed in a free kick put in play by Julian Portugal and scored out of a breakaway to help propel the Rebels past Seattle 3-1.  UNLV also topped Utah Valley 1-0 with senior Salvador Bernal converting a penalty kick to secure the win. 
Asani Samuels - Senior - Forward - Canisius College Samuels helped the Griffs secure two solid wins in MAAC play.  He contributed a goal and an assist along with Nicolo Baudo on teammate Derek Maier's goal in Canisius' 4-1 win over Rider.  Samuels scored his sixth goal of the year out of a counter attack after receiving a cross from Pat Conlon in Canisius' 2-0 victory over Iona. The Griffs improve to 7-3-2 with a 2-1-1 mark in MAAC play.  
Mael Corboz - Junior - Midfielder - Maryland Corboz came through in the clutch for the Terps converting a penalty kick which proved to be the difference maker in Maryland's 1-0 win over an always tough VCU team and he scored twice to help power the Terps past highly regarded Penn State 4-0. His first goal against the Nittany Lions was from twenty-five yards out with an assist from teammate Mikey Ambrose.  His second score was out of a penalty kick. Maryland is now 5-5-2 overall with a 2-1-1 mark in Big Ten play. .   
Colin McAtee - RS Junior - Midfielder - Michigan McAtee was a scoring machine in Michigan's 3-2 win over Notre Dame.  He converted a header out of a corner, drove a shot into the lower right corner from the top of the eighteen, and netted the game-winning goal when he converted another header out of a corner kick. He also contriubuted a goal from the top of the box in Michigan's 3-0 win over Rutgers.   
Joseph Greenspan - Senior - Defender - Navy  The Navy center back anchored a very tenacious backline that shutout American 2-0 and Colgate 2-0.  The Mids secured two impressive wins to up their record to 7-4-2 with a 3-1-0 mark in Patriot League play. Greenspan is an iron man who continues to do the things he needs to do to help his team secure wins.    
Tyler Hilliard - RS Junior - Defender - Syracuse  Hilliard scored twice out of free kicks served in by teammate Jordan Murrell to help the Orange secure a 3-1 win over Wake Forest in ACC play.  In both goals Murrell sent a ball into the back post that Hilliard decisively drove into the goal. Syracuse also topped Albany 2-1.  The Orange are now 11-1-0 with a 4-1-0 mark in conference play.  
Bjarki Aoalsteinsson - Junior - Defender - James Madison  Aoalsteinsson is a lock down defemder.   This week he was at the heart of a stout James Madison defense that shutout Delaware 1-0 on the road and tied UNCW 1-1 at home in Colonial Athletic Association action. The Dukes improve to 5-4-3 overall with a 1-0-1 mark in conference play.  
Calle Brown - RS Senior - Goalkeeper - Virginia  Brown was solid between the pipes for the Cavaliers.  He had five saves to record the shutout in goal in Virginia's 1-0 win on the road over George Mason.  He also was superb between the pipes in Virginia's 1-0 win over Duke. Virginia recorded its fourth straight victory and third consecutive shutout to improve to 8-3-1 with a 3-1-1 mark in ACC play. 

College Soccer News National Team Of The Week - Week Ending October 5, 2014

Emil Ekblom - Sophomore - Forward - Syracuse  Ekblom continues to come up with big plays for the Orange.  He decisively placed a header into the top right corner of the net in overtime after receiving a cross from Oyvind Alseth to give Syracuse the edge they needed to secure a hard fought 1-0 on the road win over Virginia Tech. The goal was Ekblom's sixth of the season and fifth game winner.  Syracuse is 9-1-0.   
Darwin Jones - Senior - Forward - Washington Jones makes good things happen.  He scored out of a free kick from 28 yards out and slotted a shot into the back of the frame from the top of the box after receiving a through ball from Ian Lange in Washington's 3-2 win over California. He also took advantage of a turnover in the box which he one-touched into the goal in Washington's 3-1 win over Stanford. The Huskies improve to 9-1-0 overall with a 2-0-0 mark in Pac-12 Play.  
Darius Madison - Junior - Forward - Virginia  Madison helped the Cavaliers get back on track this week.  He placed a rebound into the back of the net from close range and drove a header into the net after receiving a cross from Eric Bird in Virginia's 2-1 come from behind win over James Madison.  He also controlled a rebound of his own shot and sent it into the net to help the Cavaliers top Pittsburgh 3-0 in ACC play. Virginia is 6-3-1 overall. 
Tyler Blackwood - Senior - Forward - South Florida  Blackwood, who transferred to USF from the University of Tampa, netted his first career goal at USF and contriubuted an assist to help the Bulls top Georgia Southern 3-0.  He followed that performance with a hat trick to power the Bulls past Temple 3-0.  South Florida is now 6-3-0 with a 2-0-0 mark in American Athletic Conference action.  
Nick DePuy - Sophomore - Forward - UC Santa Barbara DePuy played a key role in two solid UCSB Big West Conference wins.  He netted the game winning goal and contriubuted an assist on teammate Duncan Backus's goal to help the Gauchos top CSUN 2-1.  He also came up big for UCSB when with less than a minute remaining in regulation he drove a shot into the back of the net from 35 yards out to propel the Gauchos past UC Irvine 1-0. 
Khiry Shelton - Senior - Midfielder - Oregon State In one of the more unusual games of the 2014 season to date, Shelton netted a hat trick as well as teammate Timmy Mueller as Oregon State displayed a lot of determination and talent in topping California 6-2.  Shelton netted his first goal of the evening after receiving a through ball from Mueller.  Shelton also contributed the assist on Mueller's first goal of the evening.  Oregon State rebounds after a 1-0 loss to Stanford on Thursday to improve to 8-3-0. 
Yianni Sarris - Senior - Midfielder - Ohio State An opportunistic Sarris helped the Buckeyes get back on the winning side of the ledger. He scored from the top of the box netting the lone goal of the evening to give Ohio State a 1-0 win over highly regarded Louisville.  He also alertly took advantage of a turnover in the box to contribute a goal in the Buckeyes solid 3-2 win in Big Ten Conference play over Michigan State. Ohio State gains momentum and improves to 4-3-3.
Matt Danilack - Freshman - Midfielder - Dartmouth Danilack helped the Big Green secure wins over Vermont 2-1 and Princeton 2-1.  He scored in the win over Vermont and converted a header out of a free kick in overtime in the victory over Princeton. Dartmouth improves to 5-2-1 overall and is 1-0-0 in Ivy Legue action.  
Cole Missimo - Junior - Midfielder - Northwestern  Missimo had a one goal and two-assist game to help the Wildcats top Maryland 3-2 in overtime. Missimo netted the golden goal in overtime with a double assist from Joey Calistri and Brandon Medina.  He also assisted on the goals scored by teammates Henry Herrill and Calistri. Northwestern is now 5-1-4 overall with a 1-1-2 mark in Big Ten play.   
Daniel Grundei - Senior - Defender - Hofstra  Grundei was solid on both sides of the ball helping Hofstra top Binghamton 1-0 and Elon 2-0 to up their record to 5-3-2.  Grundei decisively controlled a rebound and then sent it into the back of the net to provide the lone goal in the win over Binghamton.  He also was part of a solid Hofstra defensive showing in both contests.  
Craig Nitti - RS Senior - Defender - LMU Nitti had a very productive weekend of play. The LMU center back converted a penalty kick to net the lone score for the Lions in their 1-1 tie with Santa Clara.  He also placed a shot into the top right corner of the goal out of a free kick from twenty-five yards out to help LMU secure a 3-1 win over San Francisco.  LMU improves to 4-3-3 overall.  
Charlie Lyon - RS Senior - Goalkeeper - Marquette Lyon anchors a tenacious Marquette defense that shutout Wisconsin 2-0 and tied highly regarded Georgetown 0-0 on the road to extend their program-record shutout streak to seven games.  Lyon was credited with three saves in the win over Wisconsin and five saves in the contest with Georgetown.  Lyon has not allowed a goal in 718:39 minutes of play.  The Golden Eagles are 6-2-1.
